Explanation on Roster Moves

My last two blog posts have received comments along these lines: "No offense to Ramon Ramirez, but he was only batting .211. Why was he moved up?"

This is a good question, and one that would be better answered by the Diamondbacks, since they are the ones that made the move. However, I can tell you that promotions aren't always about who has the best numbers.

Looking at the Silver Hawks roster, we see 25 players. So why wasn't the guy with the best stats promoted? Let's start trimming off guys:

First off, Visalia needed a position player, so that eliminates the 13 pitchers, and leaves us with 12 players that could be promoted.

Secondly, they needed an infielder, so that trims off six more (two catchers and four outfielders), leaving us with six players that could be promoted.

Thirdly, they needed a corner infielder, so that trims off Navarro, Elmore, and Estevez, leaving us with:

1) Ramon Ramirez
2) Justin Parker
3) Nelson Gomez

Of those three, Parker has the best numbers, but he is just coming back from an injury and has played in just two games in the last three weeks. Are you really going to promote a guy who has been hurt, and force him to play against tougher competition as he's trying to get better?

So now between Gomez and Ramirez, while Gomez has slightly better numbers, Ramirez is older, has been in the system longer, and is better suited for a move to the next level. Gomez is just starting to figure out his hitting here in the Midwest League, and a move right now could mess him up.

Ramirez is a veteran player who can move up, fill the role needed (even if it's as a backup), and not miss a beat. Again, no offense meant here to Ramon Ramirez, but a promotion is very rarely given to the best player on the team. Age has a lot to do with it. Experience has a lot to do with it. And the biggest key of all is who can fill the open role at the next level.

And another important thing to remember is that you wouldn't promote a left-handed specialist reliever to fill a starting role at the next level, right? So you also wouldnt' promote a starting third baseman to fill a backup role. You want to keep guys in their same roles all the way through the system for the most part.

Hopefully this helps.

Pollock Joins Silver Hawks

Here's the full story.

Still at 24 active players with Ramirez moving up to Visalia and Morgan on the DL.

With the addition of Krauss and Pollock recently, the Silver Hawks lineup has gotten stronger. I think a few new bats makes every part of the lineup stronger, because it allows players to move into roles they are more comfortable.

For example, Alberto Diaz was batting cleanup for South Bend throughout June. While he is a power hitter, he is better suited for 6th or 7th in the lineup at this time until he develops further. And when you talk about a 7th hitter with the power numbers that Diaz has, that immediately makes the bottom third of the lineup better.

Roster Move

Ramon Ramirez was promoted to high-A Visalia last night. That's the only news I have right now. I'm still waiting to find out if A.J. Pollock is officially being added to the roster today or not.

While losing Ramirez might not seem like a huge deal, I think it hurts in terms of leadership. He was a player that the younger guys looked up to, particularly the younger Latin American players. He was a good "clubhouse" guy, and had a knack for coming up with some big hits this season (remember the walk-off hit in the bottom of the 15th against Beloit).

More updates if I hear anything more.

Woo Hoo

An opponent other than Fort Wayne tomorrow!

I know that it might be out of the frying pan and into the fire with West Michigan coming to town, but at this point, it's nice to play someone other than the TinCaps.

I hope everyone regrouped during the off day. I certainly did, although I managed to get myself nice and sunburnt on the golf course today.

Back at it tomorrow. 7:30 PM First Pitch. 7:10 Pregame Show on 1620 ESPN Radio and www.silverhawks.com.

Gomez - 1B
Estevez - 3B

Elmore - 2B

Our pregame interview tonight will be with Mike Maahs, who has been associated with Fort Wayne in a variety of roles for quite some time, most notably as one of their radio broadcasters as of late.

Poll Results

28 people voted in how they thought the Silver Hawks would finish the second half. Here are the results:

11 - Second Half Champions
13 - Second Half Wild Card
4 - Miss the Playoffs (Boo on these people)

New poll to the right to gauge your major league interests. I'm curious as to the results. I picked the Diamondbacks for the obvious reason as one of the choices, and then I picked the three closest geographical teams. I included the other category, because since the Silver Hawks are spread from throughout the country, I'm sure there are fans who follow a particular player on South Bend but don't care for any of the "local" teams.

Blogging from the Bus

For whatever reason, on this trip to Fort Wayne we have a luxury bus that has the following:
  • Leather Seats
  • Satellite TV
  • Wi-Fi

Usually our buses have TVs and a DVD player, so the only thing you can watch is movies brought by the players. This gets interesting at times, and in my four years as a broadcaster, I've seen movies like BeerFest and Old School more times than I can count. Not to say that there is anything wrong with these movies, but actually having Satellite TV is a nice change. Unfortunately, there are no early MLB games today, so we're currently watching the Outdoor Channel. I realize I'm from Kentucky, but this isn't really my style.

The Wi-Fi is something we usually don't have, although I have to say I'm a big fan. I can get a lot done (like this blog and my media notes) if I had internet access at all times.

If you ever wondered what a bus trip is like, let me summarize it by looking around the bus and telling you what I see right now:

-TVs are on, only about 2 people really watching

-There are currently 32 people on the bus, including players, coaching staff, and the bus driver.

-I'd say about 12 of the 32 are currently sleeping...or at least they were until the bus driver just slammed on the brakes and just woke everyone up (not his fault, a bad driver in front of us made a stupid move).

-Half of the people on the bus have in earphones listening to music of some sort (myself included and my current selection is Billy Joel -- I have an appreciation for all types of music).

-I'm in the third row behind the driver, one seat back of strength coach Vaughn Robinson, and two back of Franciso Morales. Mark Haley has the first row on the right side. Normally Erik Sabel is directly behind him, but Sabel isn't on the bus on this trip for some reason. Brian Czachowski usually occupies the third seat on the right, but he's moved up to the second seat with Sabel being absent. The players fill in the rest of the seats. Most have a row to themselves, although a few have to double up.

-I think there was a card game going on about halfway back. No idea what they are playing. If it's not War, Crazy 8's, or Euchre, I'm not playing.

-That's about it. Trust me, it's not that exciting, particularly when you play 70 games on the road a season.

Pollock Update

First of all, I've been posting like crazy today, so scroll down and read them all. I felt I owed you for the time I took off over the all-star break, so you're getting overloaded with info today.

Secondly, here's the latest news I have on A.J. Pollock:

He's signed a contract.
He's coming to South Bend at some point.
He's not expected to officially join the Silver Hawks roster until next week at the earliest.

That's all I know. I'd also like to think that the Silver Hawks can win a few games against Fort Wayne over the next four days. That's a heck of a lot more important right now than if/when a new player is arriving.

LAST GAME (Sunday): South Bend erupted for eight runs on nine hits in the second inning (both season highs), as they routed the Fort Wayne TinCaps 8-3 in the first half finale on Sunday. It was the first win for the Silver Hawks in 12 tries over the TinCaps this season. Jake Elmore had a two run triple in the big inning, with Rossmel Perez picking up two hits in the inning, scoring a run and driving in another. Keny Sosa (ND) enjoyed another good outing, tossing 4.0 scoreless innings. Jordan Meaker (WP, 2-0) pitched two scoreless innings in middle relief to be credited with the win. All nine batters for South Bend had a hit, and eight of the nine scored a run.

TEAM NOTES:
· Manager Mark Haley and his staff led the East All-Stars to a 6-3 win on Tuesday at Alliant Energy Field in Clinton, Iowa.
· The Silver Hawks beat the TinCaps for the first time on Sunday after losing the first 11 against Fort Wayne.
· South Bend finished the first half in a virtual tie for fourth place, percentage points behind the Dayton Dragons.
· South Bend has a losing record against every Eastern Division team but Lansing (1-6 WM, 1-7 GL, 1-11 FW, 3-5 DTN, 7-3 LAN).
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________
INDIVIDUAL NOTES:
· RHP Ryan Cook started the All-Star Game for the East, allowing one hit and no runs in 1.0 inning pitched.
· RHP T.J. Hose threw 0.2 innings, needing just two pitches to get two outs in the all star game.
· LHP Bayron Zepeda also threw 0.2 innings allowing an inherited runner to score.
· INF Reynaldo Navarro was 0-for-2 in the ASG. Outfielder Alfredo Marte was 0-for-1.
· OF Marc Krauss has one hit in each of his first five games with South Bend.

Welcome to the Second Half

And after a light 3-4 days, I will resume my normal production on this blog.

The big story right now is AJ Pollock, the first round pick from Notre Dame. By all accounts, he has signed with the Diamondbacks and is going to be assigned to South Bend (at least that's what all the local media keep telling me, even if I have not heard it myself).

So the question becomes when does he play?

For the record, this is not unusual for other people to know something about a player with me still in the dark. Even if I hear the rumors (as I have), I certainly can't release anything or publish anything until it becomes official. Partly because that's my job, and partly because things change all the time in baseball.

Roster Moves

RHP Keny Sosa reassigned to Missoula.

RHP Sean Morgan placed on the DL with right elbow tendonitis, retroactive to June 21st (he hasn't pitched since June 5th).

What This Means: Aside from the obvious, it means that the Silver Hawks have only 22 active players on their roster, plus three on the DL. I think Wade Miley comes off the DL soon, as in today or tomorrow. I'd like to think Justin Parker is not far behind.

Even still, that leaves one more open spot on the roster. Another pitcher? A fielder? A.J. Pollock?

Your guess is as good as mine.

More on Krauss

I have been posting like crazy the last 30 minutes, so be sure to scroll down and read everything.

Lately I've been linking to a lot of different sites, so I'll continue that trend with an interview that futurebacks.com did with Marc Krauss yesterday.

You may have to be a subscriber to read it, but it's a good site for news and updates about players, so certainly worth it.

Signed Draft Picks (As of 6/17 12:00 PM)

When I receive word from the Diamondbacks about guys signing, I'll add it here. They'll be sorted by round. Bolded guys have been added since last update.

Parker Placed on DL

You can read the full story here.

My take: He hasn't played since June 6th, and I think everyone was starting to get the feeling he wasn't going to be back until the second half anyhow. This just confirms it.

Marc Krauss, the second rounder added to the team yesterday, is expected to arrive right around game time tonight. He likely won't play in game one, but should be ready to go for game two.

Today's Roster Move

OF Marc Krauss (D'Backs second round pick) has been added to South Bend's roster.

Read the story here.

Tuesday's Game Rained Out

Full Story and Tomorrow's Probables here.

Stay tuned for a roster move in the next hour.

OF's in Extended Spring Training

In talking about who might replace Brendan Duffy on the active roster, I mentioned it could be a recent draft pick or someone who has been hanging out in extended spring training.

Thanks to our friends at www.futurebacks.com, we now have the roster of outfielders from extended spring:

Outfielders (8) - Daniel Rodriguez, Tyrell Worthington, Roberto Rodriguez, Bobby Stone, Alan Santiago, Ender Inciarte, Astolfo Inciarte, Henry Zaballa

If you like content like this and want to follow all the prospects, www.futurebacks.com is the website to go to.

Tonight's Lineup

FYI -- If you want to know what's going on with Justin Parker and Sean Morgan in terms of their injuries, the pregame show tonight will have all your answers.

Navarro - SS
Elmore - 2B
Marte - LF
Diaz - CF
Asencio - RF
Gomez - 3B
Ramirez - 1B
Perez - DH
Davis - C

Sinclair - SP

Other Diamondbacks Transactions

All of these have been in the last few days, and involved former Silver Hawks.

Today --
OF Colin Cowgill placed the DL in high-A Visalia with a fractured right hand (thus creating the spot for Brendan Duffy -- see post below)

Yesterday --
P Jarrod Parker placed on the Double-A Mobile DL with a wrist contusion.
P Chase Christianson promoted from Visalia to Mobile.
P Victor Capellan (pitched with South Bend for two games) promoted to Visalia roster from extended spring.

Saturday --
P Billy Spottiswood promoted from Visalia to Triple-A Reno

Duffy Promoted to Visalia

The full story can be read here.

Good for Duffy. Bad for the Silver Hawks. He was a heck of a leadoff guy and led the team in a number of offensive categories (runs, hits, average, on-base percentage, stolen bases to name a few).

My Analysis: With no one taking his place right now, it leaves it open to a lot of speculation. Obviously South Bend is not going to play with only 24 total players and three outfielders the rest of the year. So who comes here? And perhaps more importantly, when?

I think the answer comes in the next week, or over the all-star break at the latest. As for who, I'd imagine it would be an outfielder drafted from a college last week. Typically, you won't send a high school player to A-ball just after being drafted.

Potential candidates:
1) A.J. Pollock - First rounder from Notre Dame
2) Marc Krauss - Second rounder from Ohio U
3) A player that's been in extended spring all season that the Diamondbacks had been planning to put in Yakima/Missoula and instead will send to South Bend. I don't have a list of players in extended, but this is always an option as well.

Today's Lineup - June 14th

Quick turnaround, so not a lot of posting today. I also wouldn't expect much tonight, as I will probably crash as soon as I get home. Back at it tomorrow will a full day of posts.

Elmore - 2B
Marte - DH
Diaz - CF
Perez - C
Gomez - 3B
Ramirez - 1B
Asencio - RF

Duffy - CF
Elmore -2B
Marte - LF
Diaz - RF
Gomez - 1B
Perez - DH
Davis - C
Estevez - 3B
Navarro - SS

Moorhouse - SP

It will be a quick turnaround tonight (on the bus after the game, 2 hours back to South Bend, unload the bus, go home, sleep, get up, at the ballpark by 9:30 AM for a 2 PM game), so if I don't get any posts up tomorrow morning before the game, please forgive me.

Today's Roster Move

LHP Wade Miley placed on the 7-day DL with a sprained left foot.

LHP Keny Sosa will join the Silver Hawks from extended spring training.

Full story on www.silverhawks.com.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is on TV right now, but it just started. Do I watch an hour of it until I have to board the bus, missing the end? Or do I turn the channel since I know that I won't be able to watch it all?

Who am I kidding? I'm watching as much as I can. I should easily be able to get through the "I've Got a Golden Ticket" Song. And in case you are wondering, it's the original with Gene Wilder playing Willy Wonka. I refuse to go see the newer one with Johnny Depp.

One More Article on the Draft

You can find it here. It's a final summation of the Diamondbacks draft.

Tonight's Lineup - June 12th

Duffy - CF
Elmore - 2B
Marte - DH
Diaz - LF
Asencio - RF
Perez - C
Ramirez - 1B
Estevez - 3B
Navarro - SS

Rodriguez - SP

Pregame interview tonight with Silver Hawks hitting coach Francisco Morales.

Signed Draft Picks (As of 6/12 - 4:00 PM)

When I receive word from the Diamondbacks about guys signing, I'll add it here. They'll be sorted by round.

4th Round - SS David Nick (Cypress High School in California)
9th Round - RHP Chase Anderson (University of Oklahoma)

That's it for today. Again, this will be updated frequently for the next few weeks. I'll repost it each time I add a new name, with updated time/date stamp in the headline.

Poll Results

19 people voted as to where they think the Silver Hawks will finish the first half. Here are the results:

2 people said first place (mathematically impossible now)
2 people said second place (again, mathematically impossible now)
3 people said third place (still a chance)
8 people said fourth place (where the Hawks sit now)
0 people said fifth place (woo hoo)
4 people said sixth place (haters! I'm imagining these were visitors from other teams)

New poll on the right!

Whew

That one got a bit too close for comfort at the end, but the losing streak is over. I was starting to tense up at the end, and I wasn't even playing.

Were you listening? What were your thoughts?

Tonight's Lineup

If the rain ever moves out, here is who South Bend will send to the field to try and break the losing streak.

Duffy - CF
Elmore - 2B
Marte - LF
Diaz - RF
Ramirez - 1B
Perez - DH
Gomez - 3B
Davis - C
Navarro - SS

Miley - SP

On tonight's pregame show, we're going to try something completely different than I've ever done before. Rather than try to play down the current losing streak, we're going to embrace it fully. We're going to examine it to the fullest. We'll break it down by numbers. We'll show that it's been a total team effort. And we'll hope that by embracing the stupid thing, and by giving it the respect that it deserves, that it will come to an end tonight. (PS -- I really don't believe in jinxes or that by talking about something, I can change the fortunes of the club. But I'll try anything at this point).

Today's Totally Useless Stat

From time to time, you'll hear me talk about how there are stats for everything in baseball, many of which are completely useless. Below is a list of the average game time for each stadium in the Midwest League (Note: I've only included game times for 9-inning games. Thus, this does not include doubleheaders and extra inning games.)

Beloit - 2:45
Burlington - 2:31
Cedar Rapids - 2:39
Clinton - 2:39
Dayton - 2:46
Fort Wayne - 2:50
Great Lakes - 2:44
Kane County - 2:41
Lansing - 2:38
Peoria - 2:33
Quad Cities - 2:42
South Bend - 2:31
West Michigan - 2:37
Wisconsin - 2:37
LEAGUE - 2:40

What does this mean? Average games at the Cove are the quickest in the league, while games played in Fort Wayne take a long time.

What else does this mean? I have way too much time on my hands.

FYI -- It's raining in Grand Rapids. It's been raining for over an hour. When I got here I was told that it was going to miss us. WRONG!

FYI Part Two -- The heavy stuff is missing to the South, but Grand Rapids is getting a healthy soaking of rain. I have no idea what this means for the game tonight. Since I am not a meteorologist, I have no clue how to read the weather patterns over Lake Michigan. I'm going to go ahead and say that the forecast shows it clearing up, unless more continues to build over the lake.

FYI Part Three -- The press box in West Michigan has an ice cream cooler stocked with a variety of treats, and it's free to the media. Yesterday it was a nutty buddy cone before the game. Today, I've already had a Dove Bar and I may be going back for more.

From the Notes - June 11, 2009

Interesting tidbits that unfortunately have a negative feel to them. Of course, having lost eight in a row, there's a bit of negative going around right now.

-The Silver Hawks have been eliminated from playoff contention in the first half.

-South Bend has left the tying run on base in the ninth inning in each of the last two games.

-In the last eight games, the Silver Hawks have taken a lead three times in the top of an inning, only to give it back in the bottom of the same inning.

-Wade Miley is winless on the road this season (0-3, 4.54 ERA on road, 2-2, 3.51 ERA at home)

Some Positives:
-Rossmel Perez has thrown out 37% of basestealers this season, tops on the team

-The next multi-hit game a Silver Hawks player has will be the 100th multi-hit game this season for the team. (76 two-hit games, 21 three-hit games, two four-hit games)

Day Two Draft Results

Remember the high school kid from Florida that threw four straight no-hitters earlier this year? Yep, the Diamondbacks drafted him, amongst many others on day two of the draft. Click the link above for a recap of the day two draft picks.

Tonight's Lineup

June 10th Lineup

Elmore - 2B

Diaz - CF
Ramirez - 1B
Asencio - RF
Perez - C
Estevez - 3B
Navarro - SS

Sinclair - SP

@ West Michigan tonight. We'll talk to manager Mark Haley in the pregame show about the recent slide, positives drawn from last night's late rally, and the MLB draft.

Draft Links

An article about day one for the D'backs system is here.

A story from the South Bend Tribune about 17th overall pick A.J. Pollock.

Of course, the best draft coverage will come from http://www.mlb.com/ as it's happening (through today and tomorrow).

I'll post more links as I see them relating to some of the top picks and scouting reports.

Pitching Update

Sean Morgan has been bumped in favor of LHP Taylor Sinclair tonight. Morgan was apparently a little tight in a side session the other day, and so the decision was made to go with the lefty instead.

High-A All-Stars

At the high-A level, the California League puts together a league of all-stars to play a game against the Carolina League (another high-A league). So there are fewer all-stars per team, but still a unique concept.

I'd love to see the Midwest League All-Stars battle the South Atlantic League All-Stars every summer, but I think that is probably years away from ever happening.

Anyhow, the purpose of this post is to tell you of two former Silver Hawks that are on the California League roster: Josh Collmenter and Pat McAnaney.

For the complete rosters for this game, click here.

Speaking of All-Stars, if you want to vote for the triple-A all-stars, go here (you have to put in a name and email address, but it's free).

LAST GAME: The South Bend Silver Hawks have tied a season high six game losing streak with a 4-1 loss to Fort Wayne on Monday night. Ryan Clark hit two home runs for Fort Wayne, driving in three runs, with Sawyer Carroll adding a solo shot to center over the batter’s eye at Coveleski Stadium. Brett Moorhouse (LP, 2-6) was again the tough luck loser for South Bend, allowing two runs in 5.1 innings. Moorhouse allowed the first of Clark’s two homers, then Justin Mace (ND) gave up Carroll’s shot, with Yonata Ortega (ND) giving up Clark’s second homer. Alfredo Marte was 2-for-3 to lead the offense.

Perez - DH
Asencio - RF

From the Notes - June 8, 2009

Rather than copy the first page of notes today, I thought I'd browse through some of the deeper sections for some interesting stats.

South Bend @ Home: 15-9
South Bend on the Road: 10-20

Tonight's pitching matchup is a rematch of the May 17th game (Bass vs. Moorhouse). Fort Wayne won that game 5-1.

The Hawks are 1-7 on Sundays, and 0-2 on Mondays, but 6-2 on Tuesdays. What this means, I have no idea.

The Silver Hawks are averaging under four runs per game this season (3.93). They are allowing 4.43 runs per game this year.

Your Help Please

With the first half winding down, I've taken a look at the names for the Burger King Steakhouse XT Home Run Inning, and I don't know that we have enough for the rest of the season. If you haven't registered yet, please do so at the following link:

All-Stars and Tonight's Lineup

All-Star Rosters have been announced. I'll go through the starters for both divisions on the pregame show tonight, and I'll also cover all the Silver Hawks named to the team.

If you can't wait that long, go to http://www.silverhawks.com/ for the story of the Hawks that made the team.

Also, I posted photos from Dayton below, so make you scroll down to see those.

Tonight's Lineup:

Duffy - LF
Elmore - 2B
Marte - DH
Parker -3B
Diaz - CF
Asencio - RF
Ramirez - 1B
Perez - C
Navarro - SS

Morgan - SP

It's off to Fort Wayne after the game, so this is most likely my last post until tomorrow afternoon when we get to the stadium

Photos from Dayton - Part Four

The scoreboard. The eyes of the Dragons light up, and smoke/mist comes out of the nostrils of the Dragons when Dayton is trying to rally.

My view from the visitor's radio booth.

The team suite behind home plate. This is the largest suite in the stadium, but they are all decorated nicely with Dragons memorablia.

The view from the upper deck on the third base side.
Finally, people always ask me what the best stadium in the league is. I can't answer that question without some explanation. I think the Dow Diamond in Midland, Michigan is probably the nicest stadium we visit. But when you put 8,000+ fans in Fifth Third Field in Dayton, it's hard to compete with that environment. Maybe after we visit every park I'll rank the opponent stadiums from 1 to 13.

Photos from Dayton - Part Three

A shot from left field towards the playing field and the seats. Again, notice the upper deck that has both normal seats and suites. This is the only park in the league that has an upper deck.

The giant scoreboard from just underneath it.

A picnic table area in left-center. The roof protects you from the elements while you still have a nice view of the action.

The stadium from straightaway center.

The picnic area mentioned above and the batter's eye.

Photos from Dayton - Part Two

The view from the right field lawn section towards the playing field. Notice there is water spraying up above the roof on the third base side -- that's a huge fountain along the riverfront in Dayton and it attracts a lot of kids on hot days.

This is the outdoor part of a cafe down the right field line.

The main part of the right field line cafe. Sort of hard to see because of the reflection on the glass. Again, I'm not a professional photographer.

The view from the visitor's dugout .

Decently wide concourses, although not the widest in the league. When you fit 8,000 fans in this park, the concourses can get crowded if the weather is bad. On the upper left, notice the TV screens. They will rotate ads, trivia, photos, etc. during the game.

Photos from Dayton - Part One

The view from the concourse behind the plate. It's unique in that Fifth Third Field actually has an upper deck with seats (not just suites like most of the stadiums in the league), so you can see the overhang of the second deck from this picture. More on that later.

In the lobby of the suite entrance, they have photos of all the former Dragons who have gone on to play in the majors. There are more photos on the other side of the elevator, so not everyone may be shown in this pictures. Notable former Dragons include Joey Votto, Jay Bruce, Adam Dunn, and Austin Kearns.

In 2007, Sports Illustrated named the Dayton Dragons as a Top 10 Hottest Ticket in Sports. Dayton has sold out every game in franchise history, which is over 800 now.

In the upper deck hallways, the Dragons hang the jerseys of any former player that was rated as a top 10 prospect according to Baseball America. Here is Austin Kearns' jersey from his time in Dayton in 2000.

The back wall of the press box is covered with specially designed Dragons wallpaper. A nice touch. That's Adam Dunn on the left.

South Bend, IN – The Arizona Diamondbacks have selected the organizational Players of the Month for May, with LHP Taylor Sinclair chosen as South Bend's Pitcher of the Month and OF Brendan Duffy selected as the Hitter of the Month for the Silver Hawks.

Double-A Mobile's Daniel Stange won the overall organizational award for Pitcher of the Month, with Mobile's Cyle Hankerd taking the overall Player of the Month award.

Sinclair spent the month of May splitting time between the bullpen and the rotation, yet excelled in both roles. In six total games (three as a starter), Sinclair was 2-0 in May with a 2.05 ERA. The left-hander threw 26.1 innings, allowing just 20 hits with 26 strikeouts and only eight walks. He is now in the bullpen, and is expected to pitch in tonight’s game against the Dayton Dragons.

Duffy has been at the top of the lineup all season and continues to get on base at a blistering pace. The outfielder hit .323 for the month, including 31 hits, while also walking 17 times and being hit by a pitch twice. That adds up to a .435 on-base percentage for the month of May.

Duffy currently ranks seventh in the Midwest League with a .327 batting average and is fifth with a .425 on-base percentage.

The Silver Hawks are currently on the road in Dayton, Ohio, where they will play game three of the four game series tonight with a 7:00 PM Eastern Time first pitch. RHP Ryan Cook (5-1, 2.85 ERA) will be starting for the Silver Hawks in his first game since coming off the disabled list.

The Silver Hawks next home game is Monday, June 8th against the Fort Wayne TinCaps. Game time is at 7:00 PM Eastern Time with pregame coverage beginning at 6:40 on 1620 ESPN Radio. Monday is also a Dollar Monday sponsored by U93 and Pepsi, with reserved seat tickets, hot dogs, and Pepsi products on sale for $1 each. I'm Famous in Dayton

I did an interview with the Dragons clubhouse manager who is also a blogger for www.daytondragons.com. Granted the article is focused mainly on my time with Dayton, but if you ever wanted to know more about me, here's your chance:

BA love for an Opponent

J.C. Sulbaran pitched for Dayton last night and received no decision (allowing 1 run in 6.0 innings). Baseball America wrote about him today on their prospects blog.

Those Crazy Dayton Front Office People

I mentioned on the air last night how they filled my radio booth with tennis balls. This is what it looked like when I arrived at the stadium yesterday (again, I used to work in Dayton for three years so they have decided it would be funny to play some tricks on me):

However, despite all the tricks, they also were nice enough to welcome me back to town with a sign on the visiting radio booth door:

During tonight's pregame show, I'll give a Silver Hawks alumni report as to who is doing what at the higher levels in the Diamondbacks system.

Greetings from Dayton...

...where my former co-workers are already playing tricks on me. I show up to the hotel today only to be told that they have given away my room. I immediately told our trainer that someone was playing a joke on me, but after calling my old friend JW who works for the Dragons, he was very convincing in explaining that they thought I was staying at home. They finally came clean and handed me my room key.

If any Dragons front office staff members read this blog, this is just a friendly reminder that paybacks are hell. Or maybe the Silver Hawks will just take care of business on the field and I'll still get the last laugh.

Today's Roster Move

Activated from DL: Ryan Cook, Bryan Woodall

Reassigned to Extended Spring Training: Houston Summers, Victor Capellan

Full story at www.silverhawks.com under the latest news column on the right side of the page.

Now it's decision time. Which of the following players moves out of the rotation so that Cook goes in?

Miley
Moorhouse
Sinclair
Morgan
Rodriguez

I would think Miley and Moorhouse are safe in the rotation. Sinclair's pitched so well it would be hard to take him out (although he is the guy that moved in when Cook got hurt, so perhaps he's moved back to the pen). Morgan's pitched better as of late in the starting role after struggling in his first few outings. Rodriguez just joined the team a few weeks ago, and has only made three starts, so it's tough to get a read on him.

I think this will be an interesting decision, but a good one to have. It's always nice to have six qualified candidates for five spots in the rotation.

Off Day Thoughts

Well it's after midnight on Sunday (technically now Monday morning), so it's offiically the off day. For those of you that visit the blog every day, you may have noticed Sunday seemed to be an off day for me as well with no posts. In reality, the Principal Financial Group Family Fun Fest and some pregame interviews took up most of my time before the game, during the game I was too busy broadcasting, and after the game I spent over four hours in my car so I could spend the off day with family and friends.

Sometime during the day Monday, I'll post an update on the D'Backs system. Then Tuesday I'll have some stuff from the notes and the lineups. Wednesday or Thursday I'll have photos from Dayton as well.

This is going to be a fun trip for me because I spent seven years of my life in Dayton, Ohio (four at the University of Dayton, and another three as the color commentator for the Dayton Dragons). I have a lot of people to see and a lot of great memories from my time here.

It's also a very important trip for the team. Dayton is a team that has struggled most of the season, yet managed to split with South Bend in late April. Combine that with the fact that the Silver Hawks are six games out of a playoff spot with 20 to play, and you can understand why taking 3 out of 4 in this series becomes very important for playoff positioning before heading into four games with the Fort Wayne TinCaps beginning on Saturday.

Every game is at 7 PM in Dayton, with pregame coverage beginning at 6:40 PM on 1620 ESPN Radio or streaming online at www.silverhawks.com.
