Monday's Game Cancelled

Monday's game has been cancelled because of rain. You can go to www.silverhawks.com for more information.

Tuesday's game will feature $1 hot dogs and $1 Pepsi products to make up for Monday's rainout.

The Diamondbacks Struggles

Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic has an interesting piece on his blog about why the Diamondbacks are struggling as much as they have. The entire blog pieces references a few former Silver Hawks, including Brandon Webb, Justin Upton, Miguel Montero, and others.

If you are a diehard Diamondbacks fan, it's a good read about the team's lack of success.

Happy Memorial Day

Happy Memorial Day! I used this image last year on the blog, and I liked it so much I decided to use it again. It kinds of reminds you how baseball and America just go together.
More posts later!

Pay Attention to the Count

Official scorer Pete Yarbro sent me this link, and it's an interesting read for diehard baseball fans. It talks about the importance of the count, in particular, how batters struggle with two strikes.

Why this article can bury you in numbers, it explains why I often talk about getting ahead of hitters and not falling behind 2-0 and 3-1 (counts that I refer to as "hitters' counts").

Featured Silver Hawk - Charles Brewer

This week's featured Silver Hawk is SP Charles Brewer. The article talks about Brewer growing up a huge Diamondbacks fan, winning three state championships in high school, and also excelling at golf. You can read the article here.

Tonight's Lineup - May 29th

Keon Broxton - CF
Chris Owings - SS
Bobby Borchering - DH
Matt Davidson - 3B
David Nick - 2B
Alberto Diaz - RF
Matt Helm - LF
Errol Hollinger - C
Andrew Fie - 1B

Scottie Allen - SP

The pregame interview is with trainer Brian Czachowski. Pregame show begins at 5:10 PM. First pitch is at 5:30 PM.

From the Notes - May 29th

I found this note particularly interesting today:

-The Silver Hawks have scored eight runs or more in back-to-back games for the first time this season and first time overall since April 22-23rd of last year (8-1 and 9-5 wins over Lansing @ Oldsmobile Park).

Borchering Article

I forgot to link to this a few weeks ago, but here is a story that the Fort Myers News Press did on Bobby Borchering.

Tonight's Lineup - May 28th

A beautiful night at the stadium tonight. I can't wait to get started with the first Friday Fireworks night of the season.

Here's tonight's starting lineup:

Keon Broxton - CF
Chris Owings - SS
Bobby Borchering - DH
Matt Davidson - 3B
David Nick - 2B
Alberto Diaz - RF
Matt Helm - LF
Tyson Van Winkle - C
Andrew Fie - 1B

Eric Smith - SP

Pregame interview is with Charles Brewer. I haven't made it completely through all the players for the first time, but I've done about 20 of the original 25. Brewer is pitching so well that I felt it was definitely worth it to interview him again.

Pregame coverage at 6:40 PM. First pitch is at 7:00 PM.

Featured Silver Hawk - Keon Broxton

Normally Fridays are when we will post a new "Featured Silver Hawk" article on the blog and website. Since the team has been on the road for the past week, however, there won't be a new article today. There will be one up either Saturday or Sunday, however.

Last week's "Featured Silver Hawk" has been on the website but not on the blog. The article is about center fielder Keon Broxton and his past as a football player and skateboarder. Read the article here.

Good Morning from the Bus

It's 5:55 AM as I start this post, and we're roughly 20 miles from Coveleski Stadium after driving through the night from Bowling Green, Kentucky. This is the second straight overnight bus trip after doing the same thing on Monday night/Tuesday morning from Eastlake, Ohio to Bowling Green.

I can promise you the guys are tired, but winning last night 10-2 has certainly made this trip a bit easier. Thankfully, manager Mark Haley and the rest of the staff realize that sleeping on the bus isn't the same as sleeping in a bed, so the players get a bit of break today as they don't have to be at the stadium as early as normal.

Like the players, I plan on going straight home and going to sleep for a few hours before returning to the park.

Hope everyone else got a good night's sleep. I'll try to have some posts later today with notes and lineups and stuff.

Thursday, May 27, 2010

Tonight's Lineup - May 27th

Keon Broxton - CF
Chris Owings - SS
Bobby Borchering - DH
Matt Davidson - 3B
Alberto Diaz - RF
Tyson Van Winkle - C
Matt Helm - LF
Andrew Fie - 1B
David Narodowski - 2B

Charles Brewer - SP

My pregame interview is with closer Yonata Ortega. Yonata's first language is Spanish, so his English is choppy at times. Sometimes with the players from Latin America, I do a test run interview and determine whether I can play it back or not (determining whether the accent is too thick or not). While you may not understand every word Yonata says in the interview, I feel that you can get most of it, so I'm going to go ahead with it.

I do like to interview every player, even if I have to get a translator. Yonata's English is strong enough that I felt that I didn't need one. Hopefully, you'll be able to pick up on most of what he is saying. You'll also hear me clarify some of the answers as we go along.

Pregame show begins at 7:45 PM Eastern Time. First pitch is at 8:05 PM Eastern Time.

Getaway Rooms

I've never touched on this subject before, but one of the most important parts of travel is the "Getaway Rooms".

When there is a night game for the last day of a road series, the bus to the stadium will typically leave between 2 and 3 PM. Unfortunately, most hotels won't let everyone stay in their rooms that late, since checkout is usually at 11 AM.

Therefore, you have "getaway rooms". The hotel will allow the team to keep somewhere between 5-7 rooms later than the normal checkout time. Typically, all the coaches will get to keep their room late, and then 3 players rooms turn into getaway rooms as well. All the players will pile into one room, or stack their luggage up and head off to kill time before the bus leaves.

I did have a getaway room in Lansing, so I can't complain that I didn't have one today. But if you ever are curious why I don't post much in the morning or early afternoon on the last day of a road trip, it's usually because I have to get out of my room and spend the day walking aimlessly around town trying to find something to waste 3-4 hours until the bus leaves.

Game and Chair Update

Today's game will start at approximately 8:40 PM Eastern Time. A major thunderstorm had delayed the first pitch, but we should be clear the rest of the night.

Also, if you scroll down to the first post of photos, you noticed where I talked about the weird arrangement of chair and table top. I don't know if the fine folks at Bowling Green read my blog or not, but they have brought a new chair into the booth and it is fabulous!

Major props to the Hot Rods for switching chairs for me. Hopefully they don't bad mouth me behind my back if they felt I was complaining :)

Tonight's Lineup - May 26th

Keon Broxton - CF
Chris Owings - SS
Bobby Borchering - 3B
Matt Davidson - DH
David Nick - 2B
Alberto Diaz - RF
Matt Helm - 1B
Errol Hollinger - C
David Narodowski - LF

Mike Belfiore - SP

A heavy thunderstorm is happning right now, but we should hopefully still be able to start on time. Right as I typed that, a bolt of lightning just struck something less than a half mile away. That was nasty!

My interview today is with Bradin Hagens. Pregame show begins at 7:45 PM. First pitch is at 8:05 PM.

Photos from Bowling Green - Part Five

Last post...here we go (only two pictures for this one):

From the right field picnic area, another look at the Silver Hawks bullpen area.

From the back corner of the right field picnic area, the view to the stadium.

Hope you enjoyed all the photos. Lineups will be coming up in a couple of hours.

Photos from Bowling Green - Part Four

Are you ready for part four?

Inside the stadium club. I completely resent this club because it's located on the suite level directly behind home plate...where the press box actually should be.

Another look at the small grassy area in left-center field.

I took this photo fro the seats behind home plate. Notice how the net goes all the way up and anchors to the roof. If you are sitting behind the plate (or really down the lines to the end of the dugouts), you have no chance of getting a foul ball.

A little off-centered, but the view form the seats behind home.

The team store is called "The Body Shop". They are the Hot Rods because Bowling Green is where they make Corvettes. There is actually a Corvette Museum in Bowling Green.

Photos from Bowling Green - Part Three

And away we go with part three...

A view from the right field corner.

This is the kid's play area in the right field corner. Those big white blobs are actually inflatable bounce houses, etc. However, they weren't inflated yet this afternoon, and I just don't think I'll be able to get a good picture of them since I'm stuck in the radio booth when the game begins.

The Silver Hawks bullpen beyond the right field wall.

What the relievers see while they are sitting on the bench in the bullpen.

What the bullpen looks like from the warning track. Notice how it juts out onto the field, creating difficulties for the right fielder as he's going back on a ball.

Photos from Bowling Green - Part Two

Part two of our journey commences...

I was standing on the warning track when I took this picture of the outfield wall. On the far left is the wall height from center field to the left field corner. You can see how it raises up and stays a taller fence the rest of th eway around to the bullpen on the far right.

This shot is from behind a small lawn area in center field.

Just a general view from left-center.

Inside the picnic area in left field.

Behind the seats in the left field corner, after they start to angle in towards the playing field.

Photos from Bowling Green - Part One

This is the first of what will probably be five posts of pictures. Remember, if you click on each photo, it should open up with a larger version for you.

We start with the odd location of the press box. This is my view as I look straight out from where I sit down the third base line. It sure makes calling balls and strikes awfully difficult.

Another messed up thing about the press box is that they put the table top too high, so you have to sit on a bar stool in order to see. But then they messed up the height of the bar stool, so you can't sit close enough to the table because then your legs end up scraping the underside of the table top. Therefore, you end up standing for most of the game, using the bar stool seat as a rest between innings.

Here's a view from further back in the booth, showing you how ridiculously tall the barstool is along with the table top.

A shot from the concourse down into the third base corner.

I'll say this much...they have wide concourses.

From the Notes - May 26th

I'll have pictures of the Bowling Green Ballpark later today. In the meantime, here are a few interesting bits of information from today's media notes:

-The Silver Hawks committed three errors for the 9th time yesterday, leading to two unearned runs.

-South Bend struck out 14 times in yesterday’s game, two shy of the team’s single game high.

-Bobby Borchering was the only starter to not strikeout last night, going 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to four games.

-Yonata Ortega recorded three saves against Lake County and now has 10 on the year (tied for second in the league).

-The Silver Hawks are now 6-8 in one run games this season.

Former Silver Hawks with Reno (AAA)

Every Wednesday we'll take a look at how former Silver Hawks are performing at other levels of the Diamondback organization. A few weeks back we looked at the Diamondbacks, so here are some former Hawks playing for the Reno Aces, AAA affiliate of the Diamondbacks in the Pacific Coast League.

Position Players

SS - Pedro Ciriaco - .212, 4 HR, 21 RBI, 6/6 SB - played for South Bend in 2006

RP - Clay Zavada - 0-1, 30.00 ERA in 5 relief appearances before undergoing Tommy John Surgery - pitched for South Bend in 2008

Check back next week for updates on former Hawks at AA Mobile.

New to the Blog

Casey Richards, the Media Relations intern for the Silver Hawks, now has blog posting capabilities. I'll rely on him to help me get lineups up for home games, plus information on former Silver Hawks at the various levels.

The only way to know whether it's me or him posting is by looking at the bottom of the post where it shows the author. Not that it matters which one of us posts the stuff, but I just wanted to let everybody know.

Tonight's Lineup - May 25th

Keon Broxton - CF
Chris Owings - SS
Bobby Borchering - 3B
Matt Davidson - DH
David Nick - 2B
Tyson Van Winkle - C
Andrew Fie - 1B
Alberto Diaz - RF
David Narodowski - LF

Brad Gemberling - SP

Tonight's interview is with manager Mark Haley (are you noticing that I usually interview him twice per week -- good, because I think that is the best way to do it). Pregame show begins at 7:45 PM Eastern Time. First pitch is at 8:05 PM Eastern Time.

Q and A with Jerry Sands

Last week, Baseball America did a Q and A session with Loons star Jerry Sands. If you'd like to read it, here's the link.

Poll Results

Most of you were somewhere between a little concerned and very concerned about the team's trouble in scoring runs.

Of 34 responses...

9 (26%) said that it's still early, and they weren't concerned.
17 (50%) said they were a little concerned but confident it would get better.
6 (17%) said they were starting to really worry.
2 (5%) said they were reaching for the panic button.

A new poll question is up on the right. Vote now.

Good Morning (Or is it Afternoon?) From Bowling Green

It's 11:41 AM here in Bowling Green...12:41 PM back in South Bend. It's only an hour difference, but I'm all messed up on my time already.

The bus left Eastlake, Ohio around 10:30 PM Eastern Time last night, and we drove straight through (no stops) to Bowling Green, Kentucky. We arrived at 5:45 AM Eastern Time (or 4:45 here in the central time zone).

The hotel is very nice, and there are plenty of options to eat around the ballpark.

I slept about 2 hours on the bus, and then about 4 and a half hours at the hotel before my body clock forced me out of bed. I ate lunch already (at 10:35 AM central time), and have already walked around the mall and picked up a few groceries at the local Kroger.

It's getting very close to being nap time however, since we won't be heading to the stadium until 4:15 central time.

Tonight's Lineup - May 24th

Keon Broxton - CF
David Nick - 2B
Bobby Borchering - DH
Matt Davidson - 3B
Tyson Van Winkle - C
Matt Helm - 1B
Andrew Fie - LF
Alberto Diaz - RF
David Narodowski - SS

Scottie Allen - SP

My pregame interview tonight is with Lake County broadcaster Craig Deas about the Captains first season in the Midwest League. Pregame coverage begins at 6:10 PM Eastern Time. First pitch is at 6:30 PM Eastern Time.

'08 Silver Hawks Pitcher has Tommy John

I'm a few days behind on this, but Clay Zavada had Tommy John surgery last week, ending his season. Zavada pitched for the Silver Hawks in 2008.

You can read more information on Nick Piecoro's Blog at the Arizona Republic.

This is my third post of the day, so scroll down to read them all. I'll be back with lineups in less than an hour hopefully.

Where We Are

The ballpark is in Eastlake, Ohio. It's pretty sad when the second paragraph for your city on Wikipedia mentions you were the cause for the infamous 2003 North America blackout.

The hotel was in Mentor, Ohio. The 20th President of the United States, James Garfield, lived in Mentor and launched his campaign here. After the game yesterday, I spent some time at Headlands Beach State Park, the longest natural beach on Lake Erie.

Roster Move and Protest Lost

Good afternoon from suburban Cleveland.

The Silver Hawks had a roster move today, activating catcher Errol Hollinger from the disabled list. This puts the Hawks roster back at 25 active players.

Also, the protest from Saturday's game has been denied. Apparently, it was ruled an umpire's judgment call. I'm not shocked that it was denied, but I do think the Silver Hawks had a very good argument.

Sunday, May 23, 2010

Today's Lineup - May 23rd

Keon Broxton - CF
Chris Owings - SS
Bobby Borchering - DH
Matt Davidson - 3B
David Nick - 2B
Matt Helm - 1B
Andrew Fie - LF
Alberto Diaz - RF
Jae Yun Kim - C

Eric Smith - SP (but only for an inning before he is followed by Diogenes Rosario).

No pregame interview today. Since we are within a month of the end of the first half, we'll start using our Sunday pregame show to update the Midwest League standings as the teams are fighting for the two playoff spots in each division. Pregame show at 12:40 PM. First pitch at 1:00 PM.

Photos from Lake County - Part Two

This is special only for today. Katie Spotz from nearby Mentor recently rowed across the Atlantic Ocean. This is the boat that she used, and it is on display today at Classic Park. More information on Katie's journey can be found here.

This is a shot down the left field corner. Matt Helm hit his home run on Friday night into the last row of bleachers above the white powerball sign on the wall.

The right field corner. The building beyond the wall is the batting cages. The white tent is a picnic area in right field. Not visible in this photo..if you go past the tent and to the right of the batting cages, that is where both clubhouses are located. You get to the field through a gate to the right of the foul pole.

Finally, this is a structure outside the stadium. Go through the walkway, down the steps, and then you have to go back up the steps and through the overpass to get to the parking lot. The overpass goes over a four lane road, and it's easier to build something overtop of it than it is to try and have people cross every night after the game.

Photos from Lake County - Part One

The team store on the third base side. Everything at the ballpark has a "ship" theme to it.

The view from the concourse behind home plate. This is going to be the photo for the game story on www.silverhawks.com later today.

The press box. I sit in the two windows below the CAP of Captains. If you look closely, you can see that the window on the right is open. That's my window.

A shot of the seating arrangement on the third base side. The first base side is identical.

My view from the visiting radio booth. Not too shabby!

Game Protested

Tonight's game has been protested by the Silver Hawks.

These things usually don't pan out, but it's worth noting. Read the game story on www.silverhawks.com for the controversial play.

If I get any more information, I'll let you know both here and on www.silverhawks.com.

Tonight's Lineup - May 22nd

Oops...almost forgot to post this today.

Keon Broxton - CF
Chris Owings - SS
Bobby Borchering - 3B
Matt Davidson - DH
David Nick - 2B
Matt Helm - 1B
Andrew Fie - LF
Tyson Van Winkle - C
Alberto Diaz - RF

Charles Brewer - SP

Pregame interview is going to be with last night's hero, Matt Helm. Pregame show starts at 6:10 PM. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM.

Pictures Later...Maybe

It's rainy here in Eastlake, so I'm debating whether I want to take pictures of the ballpark today, or wait until tomorrow morning when it's supposed to be absolutely beautiful.

Since the tarp is currently on the field, I'm leaning towards waiting until tomorrow. If they pull the tarp early enough that I can get out and take pictures, I will. If not, expect them tomorrow.

From the Notes - May 22nd

TEAM NOTES:

-The Hawks won their first ever game at Classic Park last night. Tuesday’s game @ Bowling Green will be the team’s first there.

-Starting pitchers have a 10-17 record despite just a 2.74 ERA (66 earned runs allowed in 216.2 innings pitched).

-The Hawks improved their extra innings record to 3-3 with the win in 10 innings last night.

-Sunday, May 9th was the last time the Silver Hawks had more than 10 hits in a game (2-9 record in games since).

INDIVIDUAL NOTES:

-Charles Brewer, tonight’s starter, ranks 3rd in the MWL with a 1.42 ERA.

-Matt Davidson has played in all 42 games for the Silver Hawks this season. He leads the MWL in games played.

-South Bend shortstop Chris Owings ranks T-9th in the league and first on the team with a .310 batting average.

Great Win Last Night

I don't want to get too wrapped up in one victory, because, well...it's just one victory. But considering all the factors, last night's win was definiately a big win for the Silver Hawks.

Consider...

-South Bend had lost 3 in a row and 9 of their last 10.

-South Bend trailed from the 1st inning to the 8th inning.

-South Bend's starter Mike Belfiore pitched a great game, but departed in line for another loss because of a lack of run support.

-The Hawks were held without a hit from the 2nd inning until the 8th inning.

-Matt Helm was hitting below .200 before going 3-for-4 last night.

-Lake County had not lost a game when leading that late all season long.

-The Silver Hawks bullpen pitched 4.0 scoreless innings.

-The game was on the road.

-The game was against the first place Captains.

Add all those together, and to me, that equals a great win.

Friday, May 21, 2010

Tonight's Lineup - May 21

Keon Broxton - CF
Chris Owings - SS
Bobby Borchering - 3B
Matt Davidson - DH
David Nick - 2B
Tyson Van Winkle - C
Matt Helm - 1B
David Narodowski - LF
Alberto Diaz - RF

Mike Belfiore - SP

Pregame interview is with Mark Haley. Pregame show begins at 6:10 PM. First pitch is at 6:30PM.

Today's Roster Move - May 21st

Greetings from Eastlake, Ohio. Technically, we're in Mentor, Ohio at the hotel, but close enough.

We start today with a roster move.

Andrew Fie joins the Silver Hawks from extended spring training.

Bobby Stone was sent back to extended spring training.

My Brief Analysis: Stone was struggling mightily, striking out way too much. With the Hawks having trouble scoring runs, they needed a veteran bat in the lineup. While Fie is just 22, he has played some in high-A and hopefully he can provide a spark and protect some of the other hitters.

Tonight's Lineup - May 19th

Sorry for the lack of posts today, I was taking care of a lingering medical issue. Good News: I'm finally back to being healthy and happy to be at the ballpark.

Keon Broxton - CF
David Nick - 2B
Chris Owings - SS
Matt Davidson - 3B
Matt Helm - DH
Tyson Van Winkle - C
Bobby Stone - 1B
David Narodowski - LF
Alberto Diaz - RF

Brad Gemberling - SP (Silver Hawks debut)

No pregame interview tonight. Instead, we'll update the stats of former Silver Hawks at upper levels in the Diamondbacks system.

CCFA Walk

I've talked about this before, but in one month, I'll be walking to raise money for the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America.

I have Crohn's Disease (one of the side effects of which can be kidney stones -- the reason for me missing Friday's game). I contact the CCFA in the offseason, asking how I could help. They were looking for a place to have the walk, and I volunteered Coveleski Stadium. I'm excited to be involved, and I appreciate your support in any way possible.

There are two links in the upper right corner of this blog. The first one takes you to information about the walk on June 19th. The second one takes you directly to my personal page, where you can read my story (scroll down to the detailed blog at the bottom) or donate. I feel somewhat guilty about linking for donations on this blog, but at the same time, this cause means a lot to me and if anyone has been touched by this disease and feels compelled to give a few dollars, your support would be appreciated.

Tonight's Lineup - May 18th

Keon Broxton - CF
Chris Owings - SS
Bobby Borchering - DH
Matt Davidson - 3B
David Nick - 2B
Matt Helm - LF
Bobby Stone - 1B
Jae Yun Kim - C
Alberto Diaz - RF

Scott Allen - SP

Pregame interview is still to be determined, but I'm going to try to talk to the Fort Wayne broadcaster today. Pregame show begins at 6:10 PM. First pitch is at 6:30 PM.

They Not Only Win Games, They Also Save Lives

I'm talking about this story about two Great Lakes Loons players who helped the save the life of an accident victim.

Thanks to official scorer Pete Yarbro for sending along the link.

Another Roster Move

As expected, the Silver Hawks weren't going to stay with just 12 pitchers and 23 active players for long.

Today, it was announced that RHP Brad Gemberling has joined the club from high-A Visalia. He is expected to start tomorrow's game (filling the role vacated by Dan Taylor).

Yesterday's addition, Scott Allen, will be pitching tonight (filling Chase Anderson's spot in the rotation).

Monday, May 17, 2010

Tonight's Lineup - May 17th

Broxton – CF
Owings – SS
Borchering – 3B
Davidson – DH
Nick – 2B
Helm – 1B
Van Winkle – C
Narodowski – LF
Diaz – RF

Smith – SP

The pregame interview is with Mike Belfiore. Pregame show begins at 6:10 PM. First pitch scheduled for 6:30 PM.

Weather Update - May 17th

It's rainy in South Bend this afternoon, but we fully expect to play tonight.

If you have a ticket or want to come to the game, the temperature is fine, so grab a windbreaker and come on out to the ballpark.

Gametime is at 6:30 PM. If you can't make the game, pregame coverage begins at 6:10 PM on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.

If anything changes, I'll update the blog and the main website.

May 17th Roster Move

RHP Chase Anderson promoted to high-A Visalia.

LHP Dan Taylor promoted to high-A Visalia.

RHP Scott Allen joins Silver Hawks from extended spring training.

More information can be found here.

Owen's Analysis (which is in no way official): Visalia has been devastated with injuries to pitchers this season. Anderson and Taylor are going up to fill roles, and maybe stay for the long term if they are effective. Both are college draftees, so they are experienced enough to handle a move up.

Allen is a young pitcher who will likely fill one of the starting roles (maybe tomorrow) for South Bend. It'll be interesting to see what an 18-year-old pitcher can do against this veteran league.

Finally, the roster is only at 23 active players. It won't stay that way for long. Expect more moves coming soon.

Featured Silver Hawk

One of the items that I have Casey working on this summer is doing a "Featured Silver Hawk" each week, to be put up on the website every Friday.

The first person he did a story on is David Nick, and the article can be read by clicking the link or looking for the story headline in the "News" section on silverhawks.com.

Today's Lineup - May 16th

Keon Broxton - CF
Chris Owings - SS
Bobby Borchering - 3B
Matt Davidson - DH
David Nick - 2B
Matt Helm - LF
Bobby Stone - 1B
Tyson Van Winkle - C
David Narodowski - RF

Charles Brewer - SP (although he'll only go one inning today due to the Diamondbacks limiting his innings).

Pregame interview is with David Narodowski. Pregame coverage begins around 12:40 PM Eastern. First pitch is pushed back to around 1:10 PM Eastern.

From the Notes - May 16th

-South Bend has lost six in a row for the first time since starting the season 0-9 and are 11 games out of first for the first time.

-The Silver Hawks rank last in the 16-team league with only 110 runs scored (Bowling Green in 15th with 113).

-Starting pitchers have a 10-15 record despite just a 2.55 ERA (55 earned runs allowed in 194 innings pitched).

-South Bend has been swept four times this year, but not in a four game series. West Michigan goes for the 4-game sweep today.

-Keon Broxton went 3-for-4 yesterday with two doubles, raising his average to .235. Broxton now has as many doubles (6) as he does triples (6).

-Matt Davidson ranks T-9th in MWL with a .324 average, third with 17 extra base hits, and fifth with 45 hits.

-The Hawks are only 12-11 when scoring the first run of the game this season.

Saturday, May 15, 2010

I hope to be back on a normal schedule tomorrow with blog posts and all that.

An Apology and a Thank You

First and foremost, I apologize for missing the game last night. Unfortunately, I have a history of kidney stones and a nasty one decided to creep up early yesterday morning. I spent over 24 hours in the hospital, mad at the world because I was missing a game.

Secondly, I owe a big thank you to Casey Richards for driving up from South Bend and filling in for me last night. Casey was expecting to have a nice relaxing weekend, and instead, he was forced into duty and filled in admirably. I also want to thank the South Bend Silver Hawks front office staff, manager Mark Haley, and trainer Brian Czachowski for being very supportive and allowing to me rest comfortably knowing that everything would be taken care of.

I fully anticipate broadcasting tonight's game (with Casey by my side just in case), but it's nice to know that if I do have an issue that others will step up in a big way.

Tonight's Lineup - May 13th

They put the tarp on the field at 3:30, then pulled it off again moments ago. The sun is actually shining right now, and we're still expecting to play on time.

Keon Broxton - CF
Chris Owings - SS
Bobby Borchering - DH
Matt Davidson - 3B
David Nick - 2B
Matt Helm - 1B
Alberto Diaz - RF
Jae Yun Kim - C
David Narodowski - LF

Chase Anderson - SP

The pregame interview is with manager Mark Haley, discussing the starting pitching, the team's mindset, and the roster move yesterday. Pregame show begins at 6:15 PM. First pitch is at 6:35 PM.

Weather Update

It's overcast and gray around Grand Rapids, but the tarp is off the field and we're expecting to play tonight. Game time is at 6:35 PM and the pregame show starts at 6:15.

Also, I'm incredibly happy to announce the arrival of my nephew Kowen. He came into the world at 1:49 AM today, weighing in at 7.92 pounds and 20 inches long. My sister Erin and the baby are both doing well, and my brother-in-law Chip is very excited to have a son.

The name is pronounced much like mine, only with a K in front of it. I'll consider it an honor that my name is included in the baby's name. So I now have a nephew to go along with my twin nieces that my other sister Angela had four years ago.

From the Notes - May 13th

-The Silver Hawks are 0-9 against Great Lakes and were swept for the fourth time this season (3x by GL, 1x by LC).

-The Silver Hawks rank second last with 106 runs scored this season. Only Bowling Green (105) has scored fewer.

-Catcher Jae Yun Kim is active for tonight’s game. He’s the first Korean to ever play for the South Bend franchise.

-Tonight’s starter, Chase Anderson, is the reigning Midwest League Pitcher of the Week.

-Matt Davidson has played in every game for South Bend this season (although he’s DH’d in the majority of them).

-The Silver Hawks are 6-1 this season vs. West Michigan, including 3-0 at Fifth Third Ballpark.

Justin Parker to Brewers

Just noticed this on MLBTradeRumors.com.

Go to the third bullet point down, and it says that the Brewers signed Justin Parker, a 2009 Silver Hawks infeilder. I don't have any more information, but you wonder if he might play for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at some point this season. Good luck to Justin.

Today's Lineup - May 12th

Good morning! It's going to be nice and loud this morning with over 5,000 school children expected today.

Here is the Silver Hawks starting lineup:

Keon Broxton - CF
Chris Owings - SS
Bobby Borchering - 3B
Matt Davidson - DH
David Nick - 2B
Matt Helm - LF
Bobby Stone - 1B
Tyson Van Winkle - C
Alberto Diaz - RF

RHP Eric Smith - SP

No pregame interview due to the early start. Instead, we'll look at the Midwest League standings and leaderboard as we normally do for morning games.

Today's Roster Move

Catcher Errol Hollinger on the DL with a left shoulder strain.

Catcher Jae Yun Kim joins the club from extended spring training.

The full story is on www.silverhawks.com.

Back with the lineups shortly.

The Final Play on Tuesday Night

An odd finish to the game on Tuesday night:

With runners at first and third, Matt Helm struck out on a ball in the dirt. The ball got loose from the catch, and moved up the first base line. As Helm was trying to run to first, he kicked the ball and was ruled out by the umpire, ending the game.

There's not really a rule that describes that specific of a play. However, there are many rules talking about how interfering with fielders is an automatic out, as is making contact with the ball before the fielder has a chance to make the play.

So ultimately, I feel that the umpires got the call right. Talking to Mark Haley after the game, he seemed to agree that the right call was made, even though he wasn't happy about it (more frustrated about losing a 2-0 game by giving up two runs in the ninth).

Tonight's Lineup - May 11th

It's rainy, but we're planning on playing tonight.

Keon Broxton - CF
Chris Owings - SS
Bobby Borchering - DH
Matt Davidson - 3B
David Nick - 2B
Matt Helm - 1B
Alberto Diaz - RF
Tyson Van Winkle - C
David Narodowski - LF

RHP Charles Brewer - SP

For the pregame interview, I am hoping to talk to Brad Golder, the Loons broadcaster. I want him to explain how the Dodgers don't really distinguish between low- and high-A, and provide an analysis of his club.

From the Notes - May 11th

Just a few interesting tidbits today:

-The Loons rank T-2nd for team batting average and 1st in team ERA. The Hawks are 5th in average and 4th in ERA.

-Great Lakes has outscored South Bend 45 to 14 in the seven matchups this season, including a 16-5 rout on Opening Night.

-The youngest player on the Loons roster is 20 years old. The Hawks have four teenagers and another player who just turned 20 last week.

-Chris Owings is the only Silver Hawks player with an average over .300 against Great Lakes (.321 – minimum 10 at bats vs. GL)

-South Bend is just 1-10 when being outhit by the opponents.

About the Pitching Last Night

For those of you that missed it on the broadcast, Mike Belfiore started and only pitched one inning last night. No, he wasn't injured and he didn't perform poorly.

Rather, it was a predetermined move by the Diamondbacks that every so often, a starting pitcher will throw just one inning in his normal turn through the rotation. The idea is that it limits the total innings he throws this season, and will still allow him to go 5 or 6 innings when the Silver Hawks get towards the end of the season.

From what I understand, this is not unique to Belfiore, as a handful of other starters will be doing this at various points throughout the season. Obviously they will be spaced out to avoid abusing the bullpen.

Whether you agree or disagree with the strategy, that is an explanation of it. I have mixed feelings on it, but the Diamondbacks know what they are doing, so I trust their judgment.

Pregame show begins at 6:10 PM. First pitch is at 6:30 PM.

Another Award for the Hawks

Chase Anderson becomes the latest Silver Hawks player to win a weekly award, bringing home Midwest League Pitcher of the Week for the past seven days. Read the full story here.

Back with lineups a bit later on. I'm going to try to talk to Chase today for the pregame interview, but no promises!

Welcome Casey!

Tonight on the broadcast, you are going to hear a new voice. Casey Richards, a student at IU and a Granger resident, is back for his second year as a Media Relations intern.

He will be helping me in the office with daily tasks like stats, roster moves, lineups, etc., and also will be on the air with me for home games this summer.

He's a very hard worker, and it makes my life a lot easier and more relaxed having some help for the next few months.

Anyhow, don't be shocked when you hear a different voice at times during the broadcast for the next few days and months to come.

The question was where you thought the Silver Hawks would finish in the Midwest League Standings in the first half. Here are the results out of 30 votes:

First Half Champs - 3 votes (10%)

First Half Wild Cards - 15 votes (50%)

Finish 3rd or 4th place - 8 votes (26%)

Finish in the bottom half of standings - 4 votes (13%)

A new question is posted on the right side of the page.

Friday's Game Postponed

We will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 4:30 PM Eastern Time (one hour earlier than scheduled).

Pregame coverage will start at 4:10 PM Eastern Time.

Go to www.silverhawks.com for more details.

Mother's Day "Pink at the Cove"

I've talked about this on the air the last few days, but on Sunday, we will be celebrating Mother's Day with "Pink at the Cove". The players will be wearing pink camo jerseys that will be auctioned and raffled off, with the profits benefitting Memorial Regional Breast Care Center.

The first 1,000 women age 16 and older will also receive a pink mini bat courtesy of Memorial Hospital.

You can see the uniforms below, as modeled by Emily Riggs and Dan Loding. If their careers in Minor League Baseball don't work out, I think they both have a future on the runway.

About Last Night

Last night stunk. Only one hit in a 5-0 loss to Lansing. There's no other way to put it other than it was a bad game for the Silver Hawks.

I still have a lot of faith in this team, because there is a lot of talent on this team. The one thing that is starting to concern me though is the lack of runs scored by the Silver Hawks. Only 92 runs scored in 28 games, an average of just 3.3 runs per game. South Bend ranks as the second lowest total in the league for both runs scored and runs per game.

While the team batting average is in the middle of the pack (8th out of 16 in the league), the base runners are not getting home. A lot of that has to do with youth and inexperience of hitting in clutch situations. Again, it's only 28 games and a lot of time remains both in the first half and the season, but just something to keep an eye on.

Tonight's Lineup - May 6th

Owings - SS
Nick - 2B
Borchering - 3B
Davidson - DH
Helm - LF
Hollinger - C
Stone - 1B
Diaz - CF
Narodowski - RF

Smith - SP

Pregame interview is with Tyson Van Winkle.

Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 PM. First pitch at 7:05 PM.

MWL Notebook

Curt Rallo of the South Bend Tribune is doubling as the Midwest League's weekly notebook writer this season. His focus this week is on Bobby Borchering (and no, he's not being a homer. Curt has already done plenty of stories on other teams).

You can read his story about Borchering and other tidbits from around the league at this link.

From the Notes - May 6th

-Yesterday was the 5th time the Hawks have committed three errors in a game. South Bend ranks T-7th with a .971 fielding %.

-The Silver Hawks have reached .500 twice this season, but have not yet been a game over the .500 mark.

-Borchering is on an eight game hitting streak, a personal best and tied for the team’s second longest in 2010.

-Alberto Diaz leads the MWL with eight double plays bounced into this season.

-The Silver Hawks have committed 30 errors and allowed 21 unearned runs this season.

Former Hawks with Arizona (Updated)

From time to time, I'll need to switch something up on the blog from the usual posts, and I'll put up information on former Silver Hawks at the various levels throughout the Diamondbacks system. Today, we start with former Hawks playing with the big league club (includes only players that are currently with the club...as of last night's games):

Miguel Montero: 6-for-12, but on the disabled list currently with a right knee strain.

Gerardo Parra: .265, 0 HR, 7 RBI

Mark Reynolds: .242, 9 HR, 24 RBI

Justin Upton: .218, 5 HR, 15 RBI

Daniel Stange: 0-0, 9.00 ERA in two games.

Cesar Valdez: 1-0, 1.80 ERA. Got the win in his only start so far this season (his MLB debut).

Esmerling Vasquez: 0-0, 3.12 ERA in six games. I forgot him on the first post, so thanks to Pete for the comment below to remind me about him.

As best I can tell, those are the only former Silver Hawks with Arizona as of today. Let me know if I missed anyone (other than Brandon Webb, who is on the DL and hasn't pitched at all this season).

Borchering - DH
Davidson - 3B
Nick - 2B
Helm - 1B

Owings - SS
Borchering - 3B
Davidson - DH
Nick - 2B
Hollinger - C
Stone - 1B
Diaz - RF
Narodowski - LF

Belfiore - SP

Our pregame interview is with Lansing's radio broadcaster Jesse Goldberg-Strassler, and we'll basically call it scouting the opponent. I like to do that from time to time, getting a preview of what we can expect to see from the opposing team.

Pregame show begins at 6:45 PM. First pitch at 7:05 PM.

Don't forget tomorrow's game at 10:35 AM.

From the Notes - May 4th

A few interesting tidbits that I included in today's media notes:

-Lansing ranks 1st in team batting average at .271. The Hawks rank tied for 8th at .250.

-Yesterday’s loss was the team’s first time being shutout of 2010. The Silver Hawks have shutout their opponents twice.

-Bobby Borchering was named MWL Hitter of the Week from 4/26 – 5/2. He hit .429 with three HRs and 5 RBIs in the week.

-Brian Budrow has thrown 9.1 consecutive scoreless innings since April 15th. He had two scoreless innings yesterday.

Roster Move

Greeting from Lansing. We get you started today with a roster move.

INF Matt Helm joins the Silver Hawks from extended spring training.

INF Victor Estevez promoted to high-A Visalia.

C Ryan Babineau played on the 7-day DL retroactive to April 30th with a left hip strain.

Full story can be found at http://www.silverhawks.com/.

My brief analysis: Helm is a 7th rounder, so you like adding him to a roster full of prospects already. Estevez gets called up to fill the void left by the Navarro trade (Estevez is older, and probably a better fit in high-A right now). Babineau's injury has me concerned. He went back to Arizona for further evaluation.

Good News

Tough loss today, but the good news that came during the broadcast:

Bobby Borchering was named Midwest League Hitter of the Week for the past seven days. Story can be read on www.silverhawks.com under the News section (below the six main rotating stories).

Cesar Valdez has been called up by the Diamondbacks and will make his MLB debut in a start tonight against Houston.

Today's Lineup - May 3rd

Broxton – CF
Nick – 2B
Borchering – DH
Davidson – 3B
Stone – 1B

No pregame interview due to the early start. Instead, we'll recap yesterday's game and do a full Midwest League standings glance.

Pregame show at 10:10 AM. First pitch at 10:30 AM.

Reynaldo Navarro Traded

2009 Silver Hawks shortstop Reynaldo Navarro has been traded to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for reliever Carlos Rosa.

Navarro was in high-A Visalia, so you wonder if this will impact the Silver Hawks.

Sunday, May 2, 2010

In Case You Missed It

Game surprisingly called after 4.5 innings because of rain. I say surprisingly, buecause it has stopped raining and I'm not seeing a whole lot on the radar. It is the umpire's decision once the game starts, so the Hawks will take the victory. Go to www.silverhawks.com to read the game story.

Tonight's Lineup - May 1st

Broxton – CF
Owings – SS
Borchering – 3B
Davidson – DH
Nick – 2B
Stone – 1B
Diaz – RF
Hollinger – C
Narodowski – LF

Pregame interview is with pitching coach Wellington Cepeda.

Pregame show begins at 5:10 PM. First pitch is at 5:30 PM.

From the Notes - May 1st

Happy Saturday! As you've probably noticed, the blog updates are less frequent on the weekend than they are during the week, largely because I try to work less hours on the weekend than I do during the week. Working 10 AM - 10 PM (or later) on Monday through Friday takes its toll on you, so I come in a little later on Saturdays. Anyhow, here are a few tidbits from today's notes:

HALEY’S CHASE FOR MILESTONE VICTORIES
• Mark Haley entered 2010 with 456 career victories (442 regular season, 14 postseason wins) and 375 wins for the Silver Hawks
• As of today, Mark needs 34 wins to reach 500 in his career, and 15 wins to reach 400 with South Bend
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
TEAM NOTES:
• The Silver Hawks have scored 14 first inning runs this season, the most for any one inning in 2010.
• South Bend has scored just 69 runs in 22 games, the 3rd fewest in the MWL - West Mich (66) and Bowing Green (62) have fewer.
• The Silver Hawks rank 4th in the league with 8 triples – Keon Broxton has 5 to lead the team.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
INDIVIDUAL NOTES:
• Eric Smith ranks 3rd in the league in ERA, 2nd in WHIP, and has a 21.0 consecutive scoreless inning streak.
• Matt Davidson had one hit yesterday and now ranks eighth in the league with a.354 batting average.
• Yonata Ortega has converted six straight save opportunities after blowing his first one.
• David Nick snapped an 0-for-13 skid with two doubles and a RBI in yesterday’s win vs. West Michigan.
