Today's Lineup - April 30th at Lake County

Way late on this:

Mike Freeman - 2B
Zach Walters - 3B
Matt Helm - DH
Yazy Arbelo - 1B
Raywilly Gomez - C
Chris Jarrett - RF
Bobby Stone - LF
Raul Navarro - SS
Roberto Rodriguez - CF

J.R. Bradley - P

No pregame interview.  On the air in mere minutes.  First pitch at 1:00 PM.

Keon Broxton Promoted to Visalia

The internet at the hotel we were staying at has been out since 12 noon yesterday.  As a media relations person, this is incredibly frustrating.  As a blogger, it's downright impossible.  We are at the stadium now and I feel like I'm human again now that I can get online.

That brings me to the headline of this post, which I would have put up yesterday if I had internet access.  After last night's game, Keon Broxton was informed that he is heading to Visalia to fill in for the injured Adam Eaton.  Broxton departed this morning from Ohio, and is no longer with the Silver Hawks.

No corresponding roster move has been made to this point, although I would imagine a new player is going to be added before tomorrow's game against the Loons.  Wait and see.

Tonight's Lineup - April 29th at Lake County

Keon Broxton - CF
Mike Freeman - 2B
Zach Walters - DH
Matt Helm - 3B
Ramon Castillo - 1B
Raywilly Gomez - C
Chris Jarrett - RF
Bobby Stone - LF
Raul Navarro - SS

Bradin Hagens - P

Tonight's pregame interview is with Ramon Castillo.  English is a second language for Ramon, and if you listen to the interview, you'll know immediately that it's his second language.  At the same time, despite the accent, you can understand what he is saying and I feel that it's very important for me to talk to all the players throughout the year.  I don't use a translator often, and I felt that we could get by without one for this interview.

Pregame show starts at 6:40 PM.  First pitch at 7:00 PM Eastern Time.

Field Story

If you head over to the main site (www.silverhawks.com), there is a story up about the new field turf at Coveleski Stadium.

The story was written by Curt Rallo of the South Bend Tribune, but it was written for MLB.com.

Baseball is a Funny Game

To be completely honest, there's not a whole lot about last night's game from an offensive standpoint that is worth writing about.

Consider:
-The Silver Hawks managed just five hits
-The team was 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position
-The 8th inning disaster with three straight strikeouts while the go-ahead run was on third

Then, when you throw in that Lake County had two homers, five doubles, and twice as many total hits as South Bend, that certainly feels like a loss.

Yet, as we all know, the Silver Hawks won 5-4.  Even after the game, half the players were shaking their head about the way they won, knowing that it wasn't pretty.

But here's the thing: THEY WON!  Games like last night are ones that South Bend had lost all year.  Now they won one ugly, and we'll see if that helps get the monkey off the back.  One can only hope.

LAST GAME:  Luke Bailey hit a two-out, three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning against Jeremy Erben (LP, 0-1) to lift the Bowling Green Hot Rods to an improbable come from behind victory on Tuesday night.  Bailey, who had commited three errors and struck out twice earlier in the night, finished at 2-for-4 with four RBIs.  The loss was the Silver Hawks third straight, and ruined a good outing by Tyler Green (ND), who went 5.0 scoreless innings.  Chris Jarrett had three hits, Zach Walters drove in two, and Mike Freeman and Raul Navarro added RBIs for South Bend.  Austin Hubbard (WP, 2-0) got the win in relief.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

TEAM NOTES:

·         Tuesday’s loss was the team’s second when leading after eight innings in 2011.

·         The defense has turned a league best 20 double plays while the offense has only hit into nine of them in 2011.

·         South Bend is just 4-for-31 with RISP over the last four games (1-3 in that stretch).

·         Lake County is the defending MWL Champions.  They won last season in their first year in the league.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

INDIVIDUAL NOTES:

·         Chris Jarrett has hit safely in three straight games, tying his season high streak.

·         David Holmberg struck out a career high 12 batters on Monday night, yet still suffered the loss in a 2-1 decision.

Long Trip, But We Made It

The bus pulled out of Bowling Green Ballpark about 1:15 Eastern Time this afternoon.  Twenty minutes up the road, we had about a 40 minute stop so the guys could get something to eat.  Then, the long journey to Eastlake, Ohio began in full.

Roughly 500 miles later, we arrived to the hotel just before 10:00 PM Eastern Time.  The bus ride consisted of two movies (both were way too loud), a pit stop at a rest area, and finally the Heat/Sixers game on satellite TV (a nice addition for the longer trips).

Upon exiting the bus, just about everyone dropped luggage off in their room before going back out to grab a late dinner.  I'd imagine most guys are back in their rooms now, ready to put an end to a day that started at about 8 AM Eastern.  Imagine how much later it would be if the game hadn't been rained out today!

With that, I'm climbing into bed to fall asleep to the sounds of Baseball Tonight or SportsCenter, whichever of the two happens to be on ESPN currently.  Good night from Eastlake, Ohio.

Today's Lineup - April 27th at Bowling Green

The weather doesn't look promising, but if the game gets played, here's the starting lineup.

Mike Freeman - 2B
Zach Walters - SS
Yazy Arbelo - 1B
Matt Helm - 3B
Keon Broxton - CF
Chris Jarrett - RF
Ramon Castillo - DH
Roberto Rodriguez - LF
Jhoan Pimentel - C

Patrick Schuster - P

No pregame interview today.  Pregame show begins at 11:45 PM Eastern.  First pitch scheduled for 12:05 PM Eastern.

Ugh

Ugh!

I don't know if that's officially a word, but it sums up the season nicely to this point.  There are some things going well for the Silver Hawks right now (starting pitching at the top of the list), but there is still a whole lot that is going wrong.

Oddly enough, the Silver Hawks still rank in the middle of the league in most categories.  It's just the lack of a hit here, or the extra run given up there, or the error committed in that inning or the failure to take advantage of an error in this inning, etc., etc., etc.

Ultimately, the players and the coaches are responsible for getting this figured out.  I know the start has been ugly (and trust me, the players and coaches know that too), but at the same time, I still don't feel like this team has played that poorly.  Now don't get me wrong, they haven't played great by any stretch of the imagination, yet I still think this team is better than 5-13.  I wouldn't say they are worthy of a 13-5 record, but even 8-10 would seem more like it.

Yet, here is the team, sitting at eight games under .500.  And here I am, sitting and typing a blog entry at 1 AM Eastern Time because even the broadcaster sometimes has trouble shaking off a tough loss.

Here's hoping the weather cooperates, the Hawks get a win tomorrow, and the bus ride to Cleveland is  a pleasant one!

Good night.

Hot Rods Team Pitching: 5.19 ERA – 16th

LAST GAME:  South Bend starter David Holmberg (LP, 0-3) struck out a career high 12 batters in 7.0 innings yesterday, but still suffered a tough loss by allowing two unearned runs in a 2-1 defeat to the Bowling Green Hot Rods.  Both Hot Rods runs scored after throws from catcher Ramon Castillo – making his first start behind the plate – sailed into centerfield for errors.  South Bend scored their lone run in the top of the second on a RBI triple by Chris Jarrett.  The Hawks managed just four hits against Victor Mateo (WP, 1-2) and went 0-for-9 with RISP.  Chris Rearick (SV, 3) left the tying run at second in the ninth to get the save.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
TEAM NOTES:

·         The defense has turned a league best 19 double plays while the offense has only hit into eight of them in 2011.

·         South Bend is just 1-for-21 with RISP over the last three games (1-2 in that stretch).

·         Silver Hawks pitchers combined to strike out 13 batters on Monday – a team high for 2011.

INDIVIDUAL NOTES:

·         David Holmberg struck out a career high 12 batters on Monday night, yet still suffered the loss in a 2-1 decision.

·         Chris Jarrett has tripled in back-to-back games and is tied for third in the league with two triples this season.

·         Keon Broxton is tied for second in the league in AB’s (68) but tied for first in strikeouts (25).

Holmberg featured in MiLB.com Article

After last night's game, my cell phone started ringing while I was in the postgame show.  I didn't have to look at who was calling, because there was no doubt in my mind that a 212 area code would show up on the caller ID.  That's the area code for New York City, which is where Minorleaguebaseball.com has their operations.

The reason I knew it was MiLB.com calling is because they always call me when a Silver Hawks player has a spectacular game.  Obviously, David Holmberg was awesome last night, striking out 12 batters in 7.0 innings.

After the game, I called MiLB.com back, took down a writer's name and number, and then headed to the bus to hand David Holmberg the information.  He called when the team got back to the hotel, and the end result is this article about his excellent performance last night

Greeting from Bowling Green

I hope everyone had a great Easter yesterday.  I was able to make it home after the games on Saturday (got in to northern Kentucky at about 2 AM) and then spent the Easter holiday with my family and my fiancee's family.

Since I rode home with my fiancee, my dad drove me down to Bowling Green today, and I've met up with the team at the hotel.  They arrived shortly before 2 Eastern (1 PM in the Central Time Zone which is where we are now for the first time this season).

Bus to the stadium is in about 40 minutes (4 PM Eastern), so I'll have more once we get to the park.

Postponed Again

Thunderstorms all day in the South Bend area has resulted in tonight's game being postponed.

There will be another doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 4:45 PM Eastern Time.

Full details can be found on www.silverhawks.com

Down on the Farm

If you want more frequent updates on the rest of the Diamondbacks affiliates than I am able to give here, there are a few ways to do that.

1)  Each team has their own website of course, which you can find links to from www.minorleaguebaseball.com.

2)  Or, if you want a brief summary, friend of the blog Nick Piecoro is keeping track on a (nearly) daily basis on his blog, found here.

LAST GAME:  The Silver Hawks split a doubleheader with the Great Lakes Loons on Wednesday at Dow Diamond, winning game one 4-3 before losing 4-1 in the nightcap.  Yazy Arbelo (solo) and Zach Walters (3-run shot) hit home runs in the first game to rally the Silver Hawks from an early 3-0 deficit.  Tyler Green (WP, 1-0) went 5.0 innings for his first pro win and Dan Taylor (SV, 1) pitched the final two innings for a save.  In game two, the Silver Hawks stranded 10 men on base in falling 4-1.  Christian Lara had two RBIs to pace the Loons offensive attack.  Logan Bawcom (WP, 1-0) got the win in relief while Shawn Tolleson picked up his league-best sixth save.

Is This Good or Bad Writing?

Thanks to official scorer Pete Yarbro for passing along this link of a game story from the New York Daily News.  Remember, this is a game story, not a commentary piece.

I can't decide if this is a brilliant piece of writing or journalistic garbage.  Sure, we all feel like writing stuff like that from time to time, but if you're writing an article about the game only, aren't you supposed to leave your opinion out?

Either way, it's an interesting read from a frustrated writer watching a bad team.

Officially Rained/Snowed/Sleeted/Wintry Mixed Out

Miserable weather.

Doubleheader tomorrow at 4:05 PM.  Pregame show at 3:45 PM.  More info on www.silverhawks.com in the near future.

Tonight's Lineup

It still doesn't look promising for a game tonight, but odds are that we will wait until after the scheduled start time to actually call it.  I'm not saying it won't happen, I'm just saying it doesn't look likely.

If by some break in the weather we are able to play, here's the lineup:

Mike Freeman - 2B
Keon Broxton - CF
Zach Walters - DH
Yazy Arbelo - 1B
Matt Helm - 3B
Raywilly Gomez - C
Chris Jarrett - RF
Bobby Stone - LF
Raul Navarro - SS

Tyler Green - P

Not sure about pregame interview yet.  I'm going to head downstairs to the locker room and see if anyone wants to talk.  If not, we'll do a scoreboard/standings update.  Gametime is scheduled for 6:05 PM and the pregame show begins at 5:45 PM.

Photos from Wisconsin

If you are wondering why the Timber Rattlers postponed tomorrow's game already (see my previous post), I have photographic evidence for you thanks to their broadcaster Chris Mehring.

View the snowy mess at his blog located here:  http://rattlerradio.mlblogs.com/

As for here in Midland?  It's currently alternating between rain, snow, and sleet.  In other words, it's not good.  If were using NFL injury report terms, I'd say tonight's game has been dowgraded from questionable to doubtful.  Nothing is official to this point though.

Weather Update

It's cold in Midland, Michigan right now (38 degrees), but to this point, it is still dry.

However, below is the hourly forecast from weather.com (I have no idea how this will format, but it's worth a try, right?

Here's an interesting note, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers have already postponed games for tonight AND tomorrow afternoon.  This might be the earliest any team has every postponed a game.

LAST GAME:  Nick Akins had a grand slam and five RBIs to lead the Great Lakes Loons to an early 7-0 lead and the eventual 9-4 victory on Monday night.  The Loons scored twice in the first and five times in the second to turn the game into an early rout.  Christian Lara added three hits and Blake Dean has two RBIs for the Loons.  The Silver Hawks managed 11 hits and four walks, but stranded 11 base runners in the loss.  Matt Helm led South Bend with three hits and a run scored.  David Holmberg (LP, 0-2) got roughed up for the loss, allowing seven runs in 4.0 innings.  Zach Lee (WP, 2-0) struck out nine in 5.0 innings for the win.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

TEAM NOTES:

·         The Silver Hawks are allowing less than one run more per game than they are scoring, but are still just 2-9.

·         The defense has turned 14 double plays while the offense has only hit into five of them in 2011.

·         Since 2009, the Silver Hawks are 6-32 against the Great Lakes Loons, including just 2-19 at Dow Diamond.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

INDIVIDUAL NOTES:

·         Matt Helm returned from injury and went 3-for-5 yesterday with a run scored.  He missed four full games with a bruised knee.

·         Keon Broxton has two triples already this season after tying the league record with 19 in 2010.

·         Yazy Arbelo leads the team and is tied for sixth in the league with 11 RBIs through 11 games.

Let's Hear from the Fans

I want to know what your thoughts are on the 2-9 start for the Silver Hawks.  I think my frustration displayed itself nicely in the early inning deficit tonight, but what are you, the fans, thinking?  Leave your comments below.

Just so you know, I have the blog set up so that I have to approve the comments before they are posted.  If I don't publish them tonight (since a man's gotta sleep), I'll publish them in the morning when I wake up.  Any comments that are ridiculously harsh, inappropriate, or just plain dumb will not get published.  It's my blog, I make the rules :)

This is not an exercise in slamming the team.  Rather, it's a way to talk about why you are encouraged, why you are discouraged, or other things you feel about another slow South Bend Silver Hawks start to a season.

I Hate the Internet and Tonight's Lineup

Everywhere I go, I have internet issues.  Whether it's trying to send email, trying to receive email, trying to connect to a server, or just trying to log on to espn.com, it seems like nothing is easy anymore.  Today's issues has been trying to send emails through Microsoft Outlook.  Apparently, the ISP that I am using at the ballpark will not let me send through my outgoing server on Outlook, so now I must log into my webmail server which is ten times more difficult that using Outlook.  *Sigh*  The life of a Media Relations Director.

I feel like I am not blogging near as much as I did last year, because I'm spending half my life troubleshooting computer problems.

Anyhow, lineup is below for tonight's game.

Keon Broxton - CF
Raul Navarro - SS
Mike Freeman - 2B
Yazy Arbelo - 1B
Raywilly Gomez - C
Matt Helm - 3B
Chris Jarrett - RF
Ramon Castillo - DH
Roberto Rodriguez - LF

David Holmberg - P

I'm hoping to grab Brian Budrow for the pregame interview, so I need to head down to the field now.

Greetings from Midland, Michigan

Well it snowed basically the entire time from when we left South Bend at 8 AM until we got close to Midland, Michigan -- home of the Great Lakes Loons.

Thankfully, the snow has stopped and isn't expected to impact tonight's game.  What might impact the game from the players' perspective is that it is not warm at all!

Current temperature a whopping 35 degrees.  BRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Today's Lineups

Sundays are always a short day of posts, and today is even less due to the earlier start.  It's chilly, but we should have no problem playing two games today.

Yazy Arbelo - 1B
Raywilly Gomez - C
Ramon Castillo - 3B

Rained Out Again

Today's doubleheader has been rained out.  We'll try again with a DH tomorrow (Sunday) beginning at 1 PM.  Pregame show will begin at 12:40 PM.

We have another game to make up because of the back-to-back rainouts.  Since West Michigan doesn't come back here in the first half, the other game will be made up at their place in mid-May.  More details to follow on that.

Trying Again Today

Let's play two today.  At least we hope so after last night's rainout.  The weather isn't great today, but we're hoping to get a break in the rain to get today's game in.

If anything changes, the information will be available as soon as possible on www.silverhawks.com

If things go on as planned, I'll post a lineup for you a bit later on.

Lineup and Rain Delay Info

First of all, there is a substantial chance of rain during tonight's game. If there is a delay, we will not keep the feed the whole time. The link you use on www.sportsjuice.com will show "rain delay" when we are in a delay, and that notification will go away when the game resumes.

The best thing to do is stay on that main page that you use to access our games, and hit refresh from time to time to see if the rain delay notification goes away.

With that said, here's the starting lineup:

Keon Broxton - CF
Mike Freeman - 2B
Zach Walters - 3B
Yazy Arbelo - 1B
Ramon Castillo - DH
Chris Jarrett - RF
Jhoan Pimentel - C
Bobby Stone - LF
Raul Navarro - SS

Bradin Hagens - SP

No pregame interview.  Instead, we'll update some former Silver Hawks at other Minor League levels (summarizing the earlier blog post).  First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM.  Pregame show begins at 6:10 PM.

Roster Move from Diamondbacks

Just got this press release from the Diamondbacks, announcing that former Silver Hawks pitcher Josh Collmenter will be called up to the big league squad!  Congrats Josh!

D-BACKS PLACE HEILMAN ON DISABLED LIST, RECALL COLLMENTER FROM RENO

(PHOENIX) — The Arizona Diamondbacks announced today they have placed right-handed pitcher Aaron Heilman on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis (retroactive to April 14) and recalled right-handed pitcher Josh Collmenter from Triple-A Reno, according to D-backs’ Executive Vice President and General Manager Kevin Towers.

Heilman, 32, posted a 12.15 ERA (9 ER in 6.2 IP) with 2 walks and 7 strikeouts in 4 games with the D-backs. He was charged with 6 runs on 7 hits and a walk with 2 strikeouts over 1.2 innings in his most recent appearance on April 13 vs. Cardinals. Over parts of 9 Major League seasons with the New York Mets, Chicago Cubs and D-backs, Heilman is 32-45 with a 4.34 ERA (190 ER in 601.1 IP) with 247 walks and 522 strikeouts in 449 games (25 starts). Since 2006, he is the lone reliever to post five straight seasons of at least 70 relief appearances after making the transition to the bullpen in May 2005. This is the first time in his career Heilman has been placed on the disabled list.

Collmenter, 25, allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits and 2 walks with 7 strikeouts over 6.0 innings in his lone start with the Aces on April 10 at Salt Lake City. Over parts of five seasons in the D-backs organization, Collmenter owns a 41-27 record and 3.50 ERA (200 ER in 515.0 IP) with 176 walks and 472 strikeouts in 94 games (92 starts). His 35 wins since the start of 2008 are tops among all minor league pitchers. This is Collmenter’s first stint in the Major Leagues.

What's With Bullpen Pitchers?

Why are all bullpen pitchers just strange characters?

For some unknown reason, Brian Budrow, Dan Taylor, and Eury De La Rosa are participating in baserunning drills...typically reserved for offensive players only.

Listen, I'm all for conditioning, but it's just funny to see these guys running the bases and praciting tagging up at third.

Gotta love relievers.

Roster Move for Diamondbacks and Tonight's Lineup

1)  There was some good news for a former Silver Hawks pitcher today.  Esmerling Vasquez was called up to the Arizona Diamondbacks to join the bullpen and take the spot of Kam Mickolio (optioned to Reno). This will not be the first time Vasquez has made the bigs, but it's always nice to get back there.

2)  Tonight's Lineup is below

Keon Broxton - CF
Mike Freeman - 2B
Zach Walters - 3B
Yazy Arbelo - 1B
Raywilly Gomez - C
Chris Jarrett - RF
Bobby Stone - DH
Raul Navarro - SS
Roberto Rodriguez - LF

Jeff Shields - P

Pregame interview will be with Yazy Arbelo.  Pregame begins at 6:10 PM.  First pitch at 6:30 PM.

Diamondbacks - Best Team for the Buck

Official scorer Pete Yarbro sent on this link yesterday that shows the Arizona Diamondbacks as the best team per dollar in Major League Baseball.

I find it interesting that they are now breaking down teams by how much it costs per home run that they hit or strike out that they record.  I miss the old days where you just paid what the ticket cost, and would root, root, root for the home team no matter what.

Lineups coming up in about an hour or so.

Unofficial Report on Matt Helm

Matt Helm left yesterday's game in the first inning with a knee injury.  He was on crutches today as he entered the stadium and certainly is not in the lineup tonight.

I have not heard any rumblings of a roster move, so I'm guessing he'll be out a few days and hopefully just has a bruise and nothing more serious.

Tonight's Lineup - April 12th vs. Lansing (UPDATED)

I've been a bad blogger the last few days.  Yesterday was because Opening Day was insane.  Today was because I was without internet for most of the afternoon.

So here's what we're going to do:  Hope that we keep the internet all night so the broadcast goes off without a hitch!  If you are religious, say a prayer for me :)

Anyhow, on with tonight's lineup with the hopes of a great broadcast and a full day of posts tomorrow.

Keon Broxton - CF
Mike Freeman - 2B
Zach Walters - SS
Yazy Arbelo - 1B
Matt Helm - 3B
Chris Jarrett - RF
Ramon Castillo - DH
Jhoan Pimentel - C
Roberto Rodriguez - LF

David Holmberg - SP

No pregame interview tonight since I've been dealing with computer issues all day and haven't had the time to get done half the work I need to get finished.  We'll do a scoreboard update instead.  Scratch that, we'll have official scorer Pete Yarbro on for a few minutes to talk about his job and how it changes with the new renovations.
Game time is 6:30 PM Eastern Time.  Pregame coverage at 6:10 PM Eastern Time.

Why I'm Not Worried

Okay, so the Silver Hawks are 1-4.  A few reasons why I'm not worried:

-They're really starting to hit the ball, and by that, I mean 45 hits in the last three games.

-Despite giving up nine runs yesterday, I really don't feel like the pitching has been all that bad.  The team ERA is 4.50, which is right in the middle of the league.  The strikeout total is only 38, but then again, the walk total is only 13.  This team (through one turn in the rotation) pitches to contact, and that's not a bad thing in a big ballpark like Coveleski Stadium.

-The first series was tough, with a commute for four straight days to start the season.  Losing three out of four on commuters is common.

-Finally, even though Mark Haley hates to admit it, his teams have always started slow.  He's a consistent manager, and more often than not, by the second or third week of the season, his teams have turned it around and are moving in the right direction.

Opening Day is Crazy

Sorry for the lack of posts today, but as you can imagine, things are rather hectic for the home opener.

I was on live TV at 6:20 AM, followed by coming straight to work to get notes and stat packs done.  I've cleaned the press box (amongst many other things) today, and had another taped TV interview.

I'll have lineups for you soon, but that'll probably be my only other post today.  Tomorrow will settle down and I'll get back to a normal day of posting.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

LAST GAME: Keyvius Sampson (WP, 1-0) threw 6.0 perfect innings and the Fort Wayne TinCaps held off a late Silver Hawks rally to win the season opener 2-1. Sampson struck out 10 batters in his six perfect innings before turning a 2-0 lead over to the bullpen. South Bend rallied for a run in the ninth on a Mike Freeman RBI single, but stranded the tying run at third when Adam Dominick (SV, 1) struck out the final two hitters. Zach Walters had two hits to lead the South Bend offense. Tommy Medica drove in and scored a run as part of a two hit night for the TinCaps.

Broadcast Info

Thanks to everyone who tuned in last night.

I know there were a few technical glitches, and I thank you for your patience.  Streaming online, we are going to have those from time to time.

I strongly urge you to email me at oserey@silverhawks.com if you lose the feed.  Getting emails is the only way I know that we've dropped the feed, and seeing them pop up lets me know to reconnect.  Do not feel like someone else will do it...if you lose the feed, send the email.  I don't mind at all, and in fact, the more emails I receive the more likely I am to see them and get the feed back as quickly as possible.

Some places will be better than others, so just be patient with the broadcast and let us know when you lose it!

Thanks again to all those that listened and emailed last night.  Your help is greatly appreciated.

Tonight's Lineup - April 7, 2011 at Fort Wayne

Here is the starting lineup for tonight's game (same as Notre Dame exhibition)

Keon Broxton - CF
Mike Freeman - 2B
Zach Walters - DH
Yazy Arbelo - 1B
Matt Helm - 3B
Chris Jarrett - RF
Raywilly Gomez - C
Bobby Stone - LF
Raul Navarro - SS

David Holmberg - P

The pregame interview tonight will be with manager Mark Haley.

Coverage starts at 6:45 PM Eastern Time.  First pitch is at 7:05 PM Eastern Time.

From the Notes - April 7th

Typically each day, I'll post some information of interest from the media notes that I write up every afternoon before the game.  It's certainly not the whole stat packet, but just some things that jump out to me on that given day.  Today's are fairly simple but they are listed below.

ABOUT THE STAFF:

• Mark Haley begins his seventh year as skipper of the South Bend Silver Hawks. He resides in nearby Granger, Indiana.

• Wellington Cepeda returns as pitching coach, and is joined by former major leaguer Bobby Smith (hitting coach) on the staff.

• Brian Czachowski enters his fourth year as trainer, while Michael Schofield is new to the strength coach role this season.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

TEAM NOTES:

• The Silver Hawks missed the playoffs in 2010 for the first time since 2002.

• The Hawks roster features seven players drafted in the top 10 rounds of the draft.

• Four countries (USA, Dominican Republic, Panama, and Australia) and 10 states are represented on the Hawks roster.

• Eight players on the 2011 Opening Day roster spent some time with the Silver Hawks in 2010.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

INDIVIDUAL NOTES:

• Keon Broxton tied the MWL record with 19 triples last season. He returns to up his average (.228) and lower the K’s (172).

• Bradin Hagens returns to South Bend, but switches from reliever to starter. Dan Taylor moves from the bullpen to the rotation.

Our Long Wait is Finally Over

Baseball season is here!

Opening Day -- The day when hope spring eternal, and every team still has hopes of hoisting the trophy in mid-September.  The day when we shake off the cold (hopefully) and embrace the warmth of the sunlight, the smell of the ballpark, and the taste of hot dogs and cold beer.

For the Silver Hawks, Opening Day also means boarding the bus for the first time and making the two hour trip to Fort Wayne to battle the TinCaps.  First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM Eastern Time, and we'll have pregame coverage at 6:45 PM Eastern Time.

The Fort Wayne trip is a commuter trip for the Silver Hawks, meaning that we ride the bus down before the game and come back to South Bend afterwards.  It's the longest commute in the league (roughly 2 hours by bus), but thankfully it is the only city that the team commutes to and from.  All the other road trips result in hotel stays, but not Fort Wayne.

While it is nice to sleep in your own bed, I'd still rather stay in Fort Wayne (particularly the first series of the year).  Other teams that commute typically have an hour or less to drive each way.

Enough complaining...it's Opening Day!  Let's go Silver Hawks!

More posts once we arrive at the stadium and I get set up.

Quiet Day...Yeah Right

Many people might think the day between the exhibition game and the first regular season game might be a bit of a quieter day around the office.  Many people would also be wrong.

On the list of events today...
-A homestand meeting previewing next week's game
-Another meeting to discuss all the concessions and picnics for the upcoming homestand
-Media Day
-Team Headshots
-Practice at Bethel College (since the finishing touches are being put on our field)
-Season Ticket Holder Dinner and Meet and Greet with the Players
-And More

Yep, it's a busy day.

You'll notice that on the top right side of this page, I've put the information on how to listen to Silver Hawks games live.

Expected Rotation

In talking to manager Mark Haley, this is how the rotation should shape up in the first week of the season:

Tuesday (exhibition at Notre Dame):  RHP J.R. Bradley
Thursday (opener at Fort Wayne):  LHP David Holmberg
Friday (at Fort Wayne):  RHP Tyler Green/RHP Jeff Shields (piggyback rotation)
Saturday (at Fort Wayne): LHP Patrick Schuster
Sunday (at Fort Wayne): RHP Bradin Hagens
Monday (home opener): RHP J.R. Bradley
Tuesday: RHP Jeff Shields/RHP Tyler Green (reverse of the previous turn)

For those that don't understand the "piggyback" system, basically Tyler Green will start the first time through the rotation, pitch about 5 innings, then Jeff Shields will enter in relief.  The next time through the rotation, Sheilds will start for 5 innings, and then Green will be in relief.  It's a way of developing two starting pitchers in just one rotation spot -- it also limits their innings quite a bit and saves their arms for later in the year.

Former Hawks on Other Rosters

With the announcement of the Silver Hawks roster, I figured you all might want to know where some other former Hawks appear throughout the Diamondbacks minor league system.  One thing of note, don't pay too much attention to what DL a player is on.  They just have to be assigned somewhere, and that doesn't mean they'll ever appear for that team (for example, last season A.J. Pollock was officially on the South Bend DL for most of the season, even though there was no way he was ever going to play here again).

Only former Silver Hawks are listed...

Reno - AAA
Josh Collmenter
Matt Torra
Esmerling Vasquez
Daniel Stange
Jordan Norberto
Tom Layne
Jason Urquidez
Konrad Schmidt
Collin Cowgill
Clay Zavada - DL
Robby Hammock - DL

Mobile - AA
Wade Miley
Charles Brewer
Jarrod Parker
Ryan Cook
Bryan Shaw
Leyson Septimo
Bryan Woodall
Kyler Newby
Billy Spottiswood
Bryan Henry
Jake Elmore
Taylor Harbin
Ryan Wheeler
A.J. Pollock
Evan Frey
Marc Krauss
Ollie Linton
Rein Mahon - DL
Patrick McAnaney - DL

Visalia - High A
Tyler Skaggs
Chase Anderson

Derek Eitel
Trevor Harden
Yonata Ortega
Kevin Munson

Diogenes Rosario
Christian Beltre

Roster Announced

The 2011 Silver Hawks Opening Day roster is posted now at http://www.silverhawks.com/.

Piecing Together the Roster

Through social media sites and commenters on the blog, here's who we think is coming to South Bend so far:

Bradin Hagens
Brian Budrow
J.R. Bradley
Tyler Green
Jeff Shields
Yazy Arbelo
Zach Walters

I can't confirm or deny any of them.  I'm just going off what others have said.  I do know that former Silver Hawks catcher Sean Coughlin was released today by the Diamondbacks.

Busy, Busy, Busy

My posts over the next few days will be sporadic since it's crunch time.  I will definitely still post here when the roster gets announced.  Just waiting on the official word from the Diamondbacks at this point.

I'll get back to a regular posting schedule as soon as I can.
