Sometimes Life Isn't Fair

Yesterday, I received an email from the Diamondbacks with the latest roster moves for the minor leaguers.  Unfortunately, this one told of the release of former Silver Hawks catcher Ryan Babineau.

To be honest, there are a lot of fans that may not recognize the name.  Babineau came to South Bend in the spring of 2009, ready to start his first full season of Minor League Baseball.  He had starred at UCLA, and then spent the last half of 2008 in Yakima.  He was projected to be the #1 catcher, known more for his defense than his offense.

In 2009, he lasted just 10 games before he got hurt.  The problem was in his hip, and surgery would eventually end his 2009 season almost before it began.

Ryan perservered though, worked hard, and made his was back in time for the 2010 season.  This time, he made it 11 games before hurting his hip again, undergoing yet another surgery.

Throughout the two years, I got to know Ryan a little bit and saw how he responded to adversity.  He was one of the good guys, who was a great team leader and would do whatever it took to play the game.  In addition, his family was very supportive towards the Silver Hawks, often emailing me or checking in on my blog often.

Unfortunately, and understandably, the Diamondbacks couldn't wait any longer.  They have younger catchers who have passed him on the depth chart, and the decision was made to let him go.

While I feel bad for Ryan and still wish him the best, I don't worry that he'll succeed in wherever he goes next.

Good luck Babs!

Hawks Back to Full Strength

RHP Brad Wilson was added to the roster today. He's expected to be the starting pitcher tomorrow.

This puts South Bend back to 25 active players (and three on the disabled list).

Full story can be read on www.silverhawks.com.

One more note: Catcher Ryan Babineau is back with the team after spending the last few months rehabbing in Arizona. He is still on the disabled list, and I don't know the timetable for a return. However, it's nice having him back because he's a great leader in the clubhouse and his veteran presence might help this young team.

Roster Move

Greeting from Lansing. We get you started today with a roster move.

INF Matt Helm joins the Silver Hawks from extended spring training.

INF Victor Estevez promoted to high-A Visalia.

C Ryan Babineau played on the 7-day DL retroactive to April 30th with a left hip strain.

Full story can be found at http://www.silverhawks.com/.

My brief analysis: Helm is a 7th rounder, so you like adding him to a roster full of prospects already. Estevez gets called up to fill the void left by the Navarro trade (Estevez is older, and probably a better fit in high-A right now). Babineau's injury has me concerned. He went back to Arizona for further evaluation.

I talked with Ryan Babineau briefly today, and unfortunately he seems a bit discouraged about his injury. I don't have any information as to the extent of it or how severe it is, but he's definitely going to be out for quite a few days and perhaps much longer.

From the Notes - April 30th

TEAM NOTES:
• The Silver Hawks committed three errors last night after having only four in the previous nine games (won eight of the nine).
• The bullpen allowed five runs last night after allowing just two runs in the previous 16.2 innings pitched.
• South Bend has swept two series, won another 2-1, lost one 2-1, and been swept three times on the season.

From the Notes - April 23rd

• Mark Haley entered 2010 with 456 career victories (442 regular season, 14 postseason wins) and 375 wins for the Silver Hawks. As of today, Mark needs 39 wins to reach 500 in his career, and 20 wins to reach 400 with South Bend

• The Hawks snapped an 0-for-12 skid with the bases loaded this season when Babineau singled in the third last night.

• The eight runs last night represent a new high for 2010. The 13 hits ties the team high on the year.

• Matt Davidson had three hits yesterday, extending his hitting streak to seven, the longest for a Silver Hawks player this year.

• Keon Broxton scored a team high four runs last night and ranks T-1st in the MWL with four triples this season.

Catching Up With Ryan Babineau

My interview with Ryan Babineau is now up on the main page of www.silverhawks.com. Ryan only played 10 games with South Bend in 2009 because of an injury, but we could see him again to start 2010 and he would be an excellent guy to have around (not only for his baseball ability, but for his passion and leadership ability).

Also, most people that voted in the poll question think the Colts will win the Super Bowl (by a 2-to-1 margin over the Saints), and this was conducted before we even knew who the final two teams would be. I have a new Super Bowl related question up on the right, and then I promise I'll get back to baseball polls as we near the start of spring training.

Monday Evening Update

Well, the good news is that the sun came out today, the tarp is off the field, and the snow has all melted.

The bad news is that there is more snow in the forecast for tonight. So, I guess we wait and see. If anything changes, you can find the information at www.silverhawks.com. I'll try to post updates here throughout the day as well, time permitting.

Also, the team arrived in town Sunday, and all the players were at the stadium today. I had a chance to talk with some of them today, and they all seem excited to be here and ready to go.

After some team meetings, they headed over to the indoor hitting facility at Notre Dame to get in some work. If you live locally, there should be a couple articles in the South Bend Tribune tomorrow about a few players (It seemed like Ryan Babineau and Justin Parker were the first targets of the media today). You should also be able to find the stories online at www.southbendtribune.com. Fans should go ahead and bookmark that page as well since they will be the primary source for articles about the team.
