New Design

A big tip of the cap to Andrew Bowen, the ticketing intern for the Silver Hawks for coming up with the new page design. I lack the knowledge and skills to create something like this, but I'm glad some others take an interest and are willing to help me out.

I think it's incredible, and actually it makes some areas of the page much easier to read (mainly the poll question, amongst others).

Poll Results and a New Question

Of the former South Bend infielders/catchers in the pros already, most of you think that Mark Reynolds will end up having the best MLB career. He got 10 votes to lead the way, followed by Dan Uggla with six votes. Nobody else got more than two.

A new question is up on the right asking you to predict what happens over the next 50 games leading up to the all-star break. Basically, where do you think this team will finish the first half.

Again, the pregame interview today will be a replay of yesterday's interview with Bobby Stone. I'm replaying it because the streaming audio was messed up during yesterday's pregame show and the people listening online didn't get to hear it.

Pregame coverage starts at 10:45 AM. First pitch is at 11:05 AM.

Today's Pregame Interview

I don't do this often, but since we had some streaming audio problems early last night, and Bobby Stone's catch has generated a lot of interest, I'm going to replay my interview from yesterday again before today's game.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION!!!

Apparently there has been an accident around the ESPN Radio studios tonight. There is a chance that the electric company has to kill the power to the station and do some work.

If that happens, obviously we will go off the air (and lose the streaming feed). Hopefully this isn't the case, but I wanted to give everyone a heads up just in case.

Tonight's Lineup - April 27th

Owings - SS
Borchering - 3B
Davidson - DH
Nick - 2B

Parkview Field Photos and Notes

If you go to this link, the first 5 posts are photos of Parkview Field from last year.

Now, some tidbits from today's notes:

HALEY’S CHASE FOR MILESTONE VICTORIES
• Mark Haley entered 2010 with 456 career victories (442 regular season, 14 postseason wins) and 375 wins for the Silver Hawks
• As of today, Mark needs 36 wins to reach 500 in his career, and 17 wins to reach 400 with South Bend

TEAM NOTES:
• The Silver Hawks have won seven straight and eight of their last nine after dropping nine straight to start the season.
• The Silver Hawks have committed just three errors during the seven game winning streak and rank 7th with a .971 fielding %.
• After going winless in the first 11 starts this season, the South Bend rotation has five wins in the last seven games.

INDIVIDUAL NOTES:
• Matt Davidson had two hits Sunday, extending his hitting streak to 10, the longest for a Silver Hawks player this year.
• Keon Broxton leads the MWL with five triples on the season, including three in the last five games.
• Eric Smith ranks 3rd in the league in ERA, T-3rd in WHIP, 5th in Opp Avg., and has a 21.0 consecutive scoreless inning streak.
-Errol Hollinger has a seven game hitting streak and has thrown out 39% of would-be basestealers.

First Roster Move of the Season

Greetings from the Quality Inn of Fort Wayne. The bus arrived at 12:55 PM Eastern Time, and we'll depart for the field at 3:00 PM.

The Silver Hawks have their first roster move of the season.

Outfielder Ender Inciarte has been sent to extended spring training.

Article on Smith

Minor League Baseball did a story on Eric Smith yesterday. You can read it here.

Somehow, Smith didn't win MWL Pitcher of the Week for this week. It went to Daniel Osterbrock of Beloit, who was 1-0 with a 1.35 ERA and 14 K's this week in 13.2 innings. Smith was 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 10 K's in 13.0 innings this week.

MLB Advanced Media selects the players of the week, and they fall in love with strikeouts sometimes. I disagree with their decision, but there's not a lot of reason to argue about it.

Bobby Stone's Catch

The West Michigan Whitecaps have posted Bobby Stone's terrific catch in the bottom of the ninth inning on YouTube with the play-by-play from their announcers. I have embedded it below for your viewing pleasure. He got up and finished the game.

11 AM Update and Lineups (UPDATED AT BOTTOM)

Well, they just pulled the tarp onto the field, which is not usually a great sign. The rain is getting here a lot earlier than expected, and it should start any minute now.

In these situations, here's how the radio broadcast will operate: We will begin the pregame show as scheduled at 12:40 PM. We will proceed with the pregame show until gametime at 1 PM. If we're ready to go at 1 (or even a little after), we just move into the game as normal. If it looks like there is going to be a longer delay, I send it back to the national ESPN Radio feed and cut in every 20-30 minutes with updates on the situation. I always try to keep you as up-to-date as possible. I don't typically update the blog during the game, so just keep checking back in with ESPN Radio to know whether the game is going to get played and when.

If and when we do play, here is the Silver Hawks starting lineup:

Broxton - CF
Owings - SS
Borchering - DH
Davidson - 3B
Nick - 2B
Stone - 1B
Diaz - RF
Hollinger - C
Estevez - LF

Smith - SP

I don't have a pregame interview recorded as of yet. I'll either get one of the coaches or just do a standings update in the third segment of the pregame show today.

UPDATE: It's 11:20, the rain just started to fall. I've also decided that now is a good day to update the Midwest League standings and league leaders to familiarize the listeners with what else is going on around the league. We'll do that in the pregame show today as opposed to an interview.

Weather Report

If the forecast on weather.com is right, then it looks like we might be able to start today's game on time.

They are calling for light rain beginning around 1, and continuing through most of the afternoon. I guess it depends on when it actually starts and how hard it rains as to whether the game is played or not.

As of now though, plan on the first pitch being at 1 PM as scheduled. If anything changes, I'll post it here.

Weather Update and Lineup

First pitch (hopefully) will be at 6:35 PM.

Here's a link to the photos I took in West Michigan last season, so you can check out the surroundings here at Fifth Third Ballpark.

This is the place last season where a foul ball came flying in the window of the radio booth and smacked off my hand. I'm horribly ashamed I didn't catch it.

Crohn's Walk at the Cove

This blog is 99.9% about baseball and that's exactly what it's supposed to be about. However, although rare, there are a few things that are more important to me than baseball. This post is about one of those things and I appreciate you allowing me the opportunity to discuss it here.

When I was in junior high, I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease. It's an incurable inflammatory bowel disease, and at times, it can make life completely miserable. I ended up having surgery when I was 15 years old, and that bought me about 9 years of relatively "normal" living. Unfortunately, the disease came back with a vengeance a few years back, and I currently take 10 pills a day and undergo regular tests to try to keep it under control. Never knowing how your stomach is going to react to food makes sitting for 3+ hours every night for a broadcast a rather trying experience to say the least.

Later this summer, I will be walking as part of the 2010 Take Steps for Crohn's and Colitis at Coveleski Stadium. I contacted the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) last fall, and volunteered to have the walk at the Cove this summer on June 19th.

If this disease has affected you or someone close to you, please feel free to join me in the walk at the Cove. You can read my story here: http://online.ccfa.org/goto/owenserey (Read the detailed entry at the bottom of the page). From that page, you can also find links on the left side to join in the walk. You can email me at oserey@silverhawks.com for more information.

Also, you can donate to me under the red thermometer on the left side of the page where it says "Make a Gift". Your financial support is appreciated, but certainly don't feel obligated.

Thanks again for allowing me the opportunity to promote this event that means so much to me. Back to the baseball posts on Thursday late morning/afternoon.

The Tenth Man

If you haven't seen the latest video about the history of baseball in South Bend, you really need to go check it out. It's over 10 minutes in length, but trust me, it is worth it to gain an appreciation of the Silver Hawks and baseball in this community.

Rather than embed it here, just follow this link and watch it when you get the time.

A few of today's points of interest:

-Mark Haley entered 2010 with 456 career victories (442 regular season, 14 postseason wins) and 375 wins for the Silver Hawks

Home, Sweet Home

The Silver Hawks bus pulled into Coveleski Stadium around 3:30 AM last night, after the 4+ hour trip from Dayton, Ohio. After a quick unloading of the equipment, I'd say most everyone got to their apartments by 4 AM or a little after. Personally, I walked in my apartment at 3:58 AM and my head hit the pillow about 4:10 AM, falling asleep around 4:30.

It's 12:30 PM as I write this, and I've been at work for a little over an hour (Mark Haley beat me to the stadium today...he'll tell you this happens often, but it really doesn't). The players are due on the field at 3:00 PM.

I have all the rosters printed, the stat packs delivered, and now it's time to do my media notes for tonight.

Anyhow, that's just a little look of what life is like on the turnaround from the road to home games. More posts later.

Tonight's Lineup (April 19th)

Good Morning from Kentucky

For those of you wondering about the title of this post, don't worry...the team is still in Dayton. I'm from Northern Kentucky originally, and drove an hour south after the game yesterday to celebrate my mom's birthday. I'll be back in Dayton this afternoon and will have the call of the action tonight, as always.

Speaking of birthdays, I completely whiffed on Chris Odegaard's birthday on Saturday. Not only was it his birthday, but he also pitched two scoreless innings and got both his and the team's first victory of the season. I always forget to double check for upcoming birthdays on the roster, so if you think about it, don't hesitate to send me a reminder email that someone is celebrating a birthday.

Back a bit later this afternoon with notes and the lineups.

From the Notes (April 18th)

How about that first victory last night?!?! Man, it feels good to win one.

Here are some of the interesting notes today:

TEAM NOTES:
• The 2008 Silver Hawks also lost 9 of their first ten, and then rallied to make the Midwest League Finals.
• South Bend is 0-for-11 in at-bats with the bases loaded this season, but got a bases loaded sacrifice fly last night from Stone.
• The Silver Hawks established a season high for runs in a game with six, and tied the team high with 13 hits last night.
• South Bend stole two bases last night, their first two successful attempts this season.
• South Bend was 5-for-13 with RISP last night, upping the team average to .200 in those situations on the year.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
INDIVIDUAL NOTES:
• Bobby Borchering had three hits last night, including two more doubles. He now has six doubles out of seven hits this year.
• David Narodowski extended his hitting streak to four games last night (2-for-4), tying Diaz for the team high.

Greetings from Dayton

Good morning from Dayton, Ohio. We got in about 2:30 AM, and I went straight to bed (I'm assuming most everyone else did too).

Frustrated with the 0-9 start? You betcha. This team is so close to winning, but just can't get it done right now. I still think that they'll be fine, and I think it'll be fun to watch the young kids grow and get better through the course of the season.

I've watched the Silver Hawks start slow for the last five years, and in the previous four, I've watched them make the playoffs every year. Granted, this year is a different group of players, but let me tell you why I have faith:

1) Mark Haley is a good manager. You might not like his slow starts each year, but he's gotten the team to the playoffs every year he's been in charge. I know the argument that it was somewhat easier to make the playoffs in the Eastern Division the last few years, but the Silver Hawks have won a title, gone to two Midwest League Finals, and gone to three Eastern Division Finals, and lost in the first round two other times under Mark Haley. That's a solid resume anyway you slice it.

2) I've watched every pitch of 10 games (including the exhibition) for this year's club. They are talented. They are hustling. They are giving it their all. And even though I'm not an expert, a scout, or a general manager, I've seen enough baseball to know if a team is good or not. This team will be fine. (Trust me, I would tell you if they stunk on ice. They stunk the first four games! Now, they have settled down and are playing like they are capable, but they just haven't gotten over the hump yet).

One final thought: I do this blog as an enjoyable read and information source for the fans of the Silver Hawks. I allow comments on my posts because I like to provide the fans a forum to show their support for the team. However, I also moderate all the comments before publishing, and I've rejected a few over the last few days. I simply won't allow this blog to turn into a place for readers to bash players, the team, or other fans. I love fans getting involved and talking sports, but I'm not going to let this blog be a forum for idiotic comments that are fueled on nothing more than sour grapes or a lack of knowledge.

Most of you enjoy this blog for what it is, and I appreciate the large number of you that visit here daily (or multiple times per day). I won't let a few others ruin it for everyone else.

Thanks!

Tonight's Lineup (April 16th)

A bit early today, but I'm actually ahead of the game for a change, so I figured I'd go ahead and post this. This will likely be my last post until tomorrow from Dayton (it's about a 5 hour drive from Midland, Michigan to Dayton, Ohio...so depending on the length of tonight's game, we should be arriving in Dayton between 2 and 3 AM -- Don't expect any early morning posts tomorrow).

Owings - SS
Borchering - DH
Davidson - 3B
Stone - 1B
Diaz - RF
Babineau - C
Narodowski - 2B

Tonight's pregame interview is with hitting coach Francisco Morales, who will talk about the approach to hitting with runners on base and whether or not these young hitters are simply overmatched at the this point in the season.

From The Notes - April 16th

A few of today's interesting (or depressing as the case may be) tidbits:

-The Silver Hawks are one of three teams in Minor League Baseball without a win so far (Erie, New Britain).

-South Bend is 0-for-11 in at-bats with the bases loaded this season, including 0-for-4 in Thursday’s 2-1 loss to Great Lakes.

-Alberto Diaz has hits in six of his seven games this season, and is tied for the team lead with three RBIs.

-Bobby Borchering has four hits on the season – all four are doubles.

A few minor league moves involving former Silver Hawks, but no current members of the team:

Pregame interview with Victor Estevez. English is not his first language, but he does very well with it and was very happy to be interviewed today.

Pregame coverage at 5:45 PM on 1620 ESPN and www.silverhawks.com.
First pitch at 6:05 PM.

Pictures from Dow Diamond

Rather than reinvent the wheel and cause an enormous amount of work for myself this afternoon, I figured I'd just link you to the pictures of Dow Diamond that I took last year. All include a description, and not much (if anything) has changed at the ballpark this season.

All the photos can be found here:
http://owensbaseballblog.blogspot.com/search/label/Dow%20Diamond

Also, if you click on each photo, it should open into a larger window on your computer.

The very last post on the page is the one I posted yesterday, but this was the easiest way to get you to the photos, so just ignore that one.

One More For You This Morning

Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic talked to Mike Berger before the seasons started, and has some capsules from the rest of the Diamondbacks minor league affiliates. Check it out here.

From the Notes (April 15th)

A couple of interesting notes (some updated from yesterday) to get you started today. I'm going to take some pictures from the ballpark today, and post them before the game.

-The Silver Hawks are one of four teams in Minor League Baseball without a win so far (Palm Beach, Erie, New Britain).

- South Bend has scored first in five of the first seven games this season.

-Victor Estevez went 3-for-3 yesterday, and is now 4-for-6 on the season.

-Hawks have moved up to 11th in team hitting, but remain 16th in team pitching despite allowing just two runs yesterday (but the gap between the Silver Hawks and the 15th place team is getting smaller)

From the Notes

A couple of tidbits from today's Media Notes that may be of interest to you:

-The Silver Hawks ranks 12th out of 16 teams in batting average

-South Bend ranks dead last in team ERA

-The Silver Hawks are one of six teams in Minor League Baseball without a win so far.

- Alberto Diaz has hits in five of the first six games of the season, including his first multi-hit game on Tuesday.

-Errol Hollinger threw out two base stealers on Tuesday, and has now caught 4-of-11 potential base stealers.

Greetings from Midland, Michigan

We left Coveleski Stadium at about 8:25 AM and arrived at about 12:30 PM Eastern Time to the Holiday Inn in Midland, Michigan.

After a quick stop in the room to drop off luggage, most of the players (and staff) headed down to a sports bar in the hotel lobby to grab lunch. I had a bacon cheeseburger that I would highly recommend.

The bus to the ballpark leaves today at 2 PM.

I'll have lineups and some more notes when I get to the stadium.

(I completely forgot about taking pictures of Coveleski Stadium before we left for the road trip. I'll do that next home stand. I'll have some pictures of Dow Diamond in the next day or two).

This One for the Dogs

Here's hoping this doesn't happen at Coveleski Stadium later this year when we have our "Canines at the Cove" celebrations.

It looks like the folks for the Northwest Arkansas Naturals had their hands full with this one:

Well, That One Hurt

One strike away from winning the first game of the season, the Silver Hawks gave up 3 runs in the top of the ninth to grab defeat from the jaws of victory.

There's really not a whole lot to say about this opening home stand other than ouch! Obviously, six losses in a row to start the year is a big negative. I also think the last two games showed a lot more positives than the previous four did, but the end result is still the same.

Certainly, no one is giving up or writing off the season after six games. Like the players, I'm trying to stay positive as well, knowing that the first win is coming soon. Even still, it gets frustrating for all involved when you get so close and then have it taken away.

Time to regroup a bit tonight, and then out on the road tomorrow. I'll have the call from Midland, Michigan against the Great Lakes Loons at 6:05 PM Eastern tomorrow, with pregame at 5:45 PM.

This Morning's Lineup (April 13th)

Borchering – 3B
Davidson – DH
Stone – 1B

10:10 Pregame Show.
10:30 First Pitch.

Good Morning!

Are you awake yet? Game time in less than two hours (posted at 8:39 AM).

I hope to have lineups for you soon. Here's a few tidbits from the Media Notes:

• The Silver Hawks are one of seven teams in Minor League Baseball without a win so far.

• Bobby Borchering, David Narodowski, and Bobby Stone picked up their first hits of the year last night.

• Alberto Diaz (4), Ryan Babineau (3), and David Nick (3) each had hitting streaks end last night.

April 12th Starting Lineup

A few more changes today as manager Mark Haley is trying to find the right combination to break this losing streak.

Broxton - CF
Nick - 2B
Borchering - 3B
Davidson - DH
Stone - 1B
Diaz - RF
Babineau - C
Narodowski - SS
Inciarte - LF
Taylor - SP

If you live in the South Bend area, it's a Dollar Monday with $1 bleacher seats, hot dogs, and Pepsi products. Come on out and root the Hawks on to their first victory!

From the Notes - April 12th

Occasionally, I'll post some interesting tidbits from my Media Notes. Here are today's interesting facts:

-The Silver Hawks rank 16th (last) in the league in both team batting average and team ERA

-South Bend has been held hitless for at least five consecutive innings in each of the first four games, including 7.1 innings Thursday, 6.2 innings on Friday, 5.1 innings on Saturday, and 5.1 innings on Sunday.

-David Nick reached base in seven straight plate appearances from Friday night to Sunday afternoon (five hits, two walks)

Former Silver Hawk on D'Backs DL

Miguel Montero has been placed on the 15-day disabled list for the Arizona Diamondbacks with a right knee sprain. John Hester has been recalled from Triple-A Reno to fill his roster spot.

Montero played in South Bend in 2004, and has been a very good young catcher for the Diamondbacks. I don't know a ton about Hester, other than he was very solid in his debut last year and Mark Haley (a former catcher himself) speaks highly of Hester's ability behind the plate.

Sunday Nights and Pictures

For those of you new to following the blog, I just wanted to let you know that very rarely will I be posting on Sunday nights.

Sundays are the only day of the week where I usually get home at a normal hour, and then spend the rest of the night catching up with family, friends, and doing my laundry (exciting, right?).

Anyhow, I mentioned that I would be taking some pictures of the stadium and posting them on the blog. I'll do that tomorrow morning/afternoon and try to get them up before game time.

I hope you're enjoying the broadcasts, even if you aren't enjoying the results so far. Questions or comments can always be left on the blog posts (use the "comments" link below) or by emailing me at oserey@silverhawks.com.

More on Monday...

April 10th Lineup

Not much change, just swapping out the catchers again and changing the field position of Borchering/Davidson.

Owings - SS
Nick - 2B
Borchering - DH
Broxton - CF
Davidson - 3B
Stone - 1B
Diaz - RF
Babineau - C
Inciarte - LF
Smith - SP

Pregame interview guest is Arizona's Director of Player Development Mike Berger (great interview and good insight about the team).

Pregame show begins at 5:10 PM Eastern.
First pitch at 5:30 PM Eastern.

Poll Results

I'm not shocked that Justin Upton won the poll for which former Silver Hawks outfielder would have the best career, but I am a bit surprised by the margin. I thought Mike Cameron or Carlos Gonzalez would be a bit closer, but the fans have spoken.

A new poll is on the right asking about former South Bend infielders.

Long Games

The first two games of the 2010 season have lasted 3:14 and 3:11 for the Silver Hawks and Loons. That's way above the average game time for 2009 in the Midwest League.

However, it could be a lot worse.

The Dayton Dragons and Lansing Lugnuts have gone to extra innings in each of the first two games of the season, totaling seven hours and 12 minutes of baseball (47 minutes longer than the Silver Hawks).

In case you are curious, the average time for 9 inning games in the Midwest League so far this season is 2 hours and 42 minutes. The Silver Hawks have averaged 3 hours and 12 minutes so far.

File that under useless information that no one cares about.

Tonight's Interview

Okay, my pregame interview is recorded. Tonight's guest will be Keon Broxton (2-4, 2B, 2 RBI last night).

Game time is at 6:30 PM Eastern.
Pregame coverage is at 6:10 PM Eastern.

We were a bit late connecting to the online broadcast last night, but I believe that problem has been worked out (I hope so).

Again, if you ever have issues with the streaming audio feed, please follow the instructions in the upper right corner of this blog.

Hopefully tonight will be the first victory of 2010!

April 9th Starting Lineup

It took me a while today to get through my media notes and stat pack, so I'm a bit lacking on the posts today. I'm about caught up though, so hopefully I'll get back on track with the regular posts in the next couple of days.

Anyhow, here is tonight's starting lineup for the Silver Hawks.

Owings - SS
Nick - 2B
Borchering - 3B
Broxton - CF
Davidson - DH
Stone - 1B
Diaz - RF
Hollinger - C
Inciarte - LF
Brewer - SP

The only change is Hollinger in place of Babineau at catcher tonight, which is not a shocker simply because of how long and cold the game was last night.

I have not yet recorded my pregame interview yet, so the player is to be determined still.

About Last Night

I typically get into work about 10 or so on gamedays, but by the time I put together stat packs and media notes, it's often after lunch before I get around to blogging again (thus, why I'm just writing this at 12:10 when I've been here for over two hours already).

Anyhow, I know that you see a 16-5 loss last night, 3 errors, 9 walks, and no hits after the second inning, and think that this team is in trouble. I'm really not all that worried.

Obviously, last night was bad. However, it's just one of 140 games to be played in the regular season. I promise you there will be other bad losses over the next six months. There will also be some blowout wins. A good baseball expression is that you are never as good as your best win, but you're never as bad as your worst loss.

Aside from the bad things listed above, there were a few encouraging things. Early on, the hitting was great, particularly going the opposite way. Despite the three errors, there were some fine defensive plays turned in (particularly the second inning play by Chris Owings and the dig out of the dirt by Bobby Stone).

The weather should be better tonight, so let's hope that the play on the field is as well.

Thawing Out

Brrrr, it was cold out there tonight, and the long game with a big loss certainly didn't make it feel any better. I'm finally starting to warm up, as I hope the players are too.

I'm calling it a night for now, but I'll have some thoughts on the Opening Night loss when I get to work on Friday morning.

Tonight's Game Still On

The tarp is off the field, and the Silver Hawks will be playing baseball tonight at 6:30 PM Eastern Time.

Here is the Silver Hawks starting lineup:

Chris Owings - SS
David Nick - 2B
Bobby Borchering - 3B
Keon Broxton - CF
Matt Davidson - DH
Bobby Stone - 1B
Alberto Diaz - RF
Ryan Babineau - C
Ender Inciarte - LF

Mike Belfiore - SP

Not a shocker, but tonight's pregame interview guest is manager Mark Haley. Listen live on 1620 ESPN Radio or online at http://www.silverhawks.com/ beginning at 6:10 PM.

Spring Break Special

We understand that a lot of kids are on Spring Break currently, and we also realize that the first weekend of the season, the weather can be unpredictable.

So this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (April 9th -11th), all tickets are half-priced. Buy online at www.silverhawks.com, on the phone at 574-235-9988, or at the Coveleski Stadium Box Office.

Today's Weather

Well, it's not nearly as good as it was on Monday night for the exhibition game. It is currently in the 30's and rainy. However, I just went to weather.com and it is forecasting that the rain will move out and the temperature might get into the mid-40's, so we're still holding out hope for a game.

A couple of notes:

-If we are unable to play tonight, the two teams, our GM, and the Midwest League would have to decide when to play a doubleheader (either Friday or Saturday). There are a number of factors that go into that decision.

-The Dyngus Day celebration will still go on as planned tonight, even if we do get rained out. A $12 ticket gets you into the Polish buffet in the Upper Deck, plus a ticket to the game.

Again, as of now, the game is still on and we're hoping we can get it played. If anything changes, you'll know both on www.silverhawks.com and on my blog.

Broadcaster Oops

I hope I do a better job this year broadcasting Silver Hawks games than this guy does covering the soccer game he was supposed to be watching. Classic video.

April 6th Morning Report

A few notes for you to start the day...

-The players had practice yesterday evening, and they signed up for their gym memberships so they have a place to work out while they are in South Bend. The last two days have also been used to get the players set up with apartments to live in for the year.

-Monday I went to all 25 guys and had them pronounce their name for me so that I made sure I got it right. Yesterday I went to all 25 guys again, and gave them the opportunity to change their height, weight, and hometown on the roster to be sure that it was accurate. So if click on the roster tab on www.silverhawks.com, the height and weight are what the players told me (I made them promise to be accurate!).

-As far as practice goes, yesterday the Silver Hawks had a "simulated game" against each other. The two pitchers I watched most closely on the mound were Dan Taylor (lefty, 5th starter) and Randy Rodriguez (righty, long reliever). I was very impressed by both pitchers, and I think the hitters were as well since many of them turned around after various pitches to ask the catchers "what was that?"

-Keny Sosa and Diogenes Rosario threw as well, but I wasn't behind the cage at that point and can't give a great report on there stuff. I can tell you that Rosario has a rather effortless motion, but still pops the ball around 92-93 mph.

-It's supposed to rain all day in South Bend today, so practice outside will likely be canceled. However, there are some indoor facilities that can be used (either the Silver Hawks cage beyond the centerfield wall or Notre Dame's facility on their campus).

Research, Research, Research

For those of you wondering what my job entails at this time of year, let's just say the title of this post says it all.

I have been researching every player on our team, trying to find out some background information that helps improve my broadcast. Let me just say that Google is a wonderful website.

I don't want to give names away, but here's some interesting info for you:

-One player was drafted in the exact same spot two years in a row
-One player has two NCAA baseball titles on his resume
-One player appeared as an extra in a movie

It's this kind of information that I'll use to help fill throughout the season. I get some initial information from internet research, and then I spend a good portion of the early season talking to players and just learning their "story"

Tuesday Morning Report (April 6th Edition)

Good Morning!

I hope that everyone enjoyed the exhibition game last night, as the Silver Hawks defeated Notre Dame 4-0.

A few notes:

-Notre Dame has been struggling this year, but even still, a team of professional players should typically always beat a team of college players. It's nothing against the Fighting Irish, but the levels are different. I would say a Double-A team should always beat a single-A team. There's just a difference in the level of play.

-Even still, I was encouraged by the way the Silver Hawks played. They pitched well, hit decently, and made the plays in the field. It was nice to see this team get after it from the very beginning.

-I felt the broadcast was solid, even if I do say so myself. In an exhibition game with a lot of changes and trying to work in new sponsors and in-game reads, it's going to be choppy at times. But from a technical standpoint, I was very happy with how it sounded and I hope that you enjoyed it as well.

-On Thursday night, if you go to www.silverhawks.com there should be a "gamecenter" with linescore information. In this section, there will be a link that says "listen". Click on that, and it will take you to the All In Broadcast page where you select which format you want to listen in.

If you had any trouble with the streaming audio last night, please let me know. I haven't heard any complaints, so hopefully all ran smoothly.

Comments are always welcome to oserey@silverhawks.com or you can always comment on posts on this blog.

Roster and Broadcast Notes (VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION BELOW)

I know everyone wants the roster ASAP. I get that. But I also understand that our official opener isn't until Thursday, things can happen between now and then, and the Diamondbacks (amongst other major league clubs) don't like releasing a roster when they still might make a change to it. So everyone take a deep breath, enjoy the rest of your Easter Sunday, and we'll have the roster for you tomorrow morning.

Secondly, our games will be broadcast on 1620 ESPN Radio again this year in the South Bend area. If you live elsewhere, you can catch them all online. For the regular season games, a link will appear on http://www.silverhawks.com/ that should say "Listen". Click that, it'll take you to the page. Or, you can just bookmark http://www.allinbroadcasting.com/Southbend.html. That should take you to the page you need as well, and then just click what format you want to listen to it in.

THIS NEXT PARAGRAPH IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING I WILL EVER WRITE ON THIS BLOG!

You can only listen when the game is live. If you try to get it and the Silver Hawks aren't playing, you'll likely get an error message. If you are positive the Silver Hawks are playing, and you are not getting the game, please call 1-888-337-1105. This number will take you to All In Broadcasting. They stream our games for us, but they are neither employed by the Silver Hawks or ESPN Radio. Be polite, tell them you aren't getting the Silver Hawks game, and they'll try to fix the problem. I can't repeat this enough: Emailing me or calling ESPN Radio if you have problems with the streaming audio will not solve the problem. YOU MUST CALL THE 1-888-337-1105 NUMBER.

A Few More Cuts

Yesterday, Justin Parker was released by the Diamondbacks.

Today, Sean Morgan and Cody Evans got cut.

A few comments:

Parker is a solid ballplayer, and he was a sixth round pick in 2008. On the surface, it seems kind of early to release him. However, he's had trouble staying healthy as we saw throughout last season, and the concern is his body is breaking down on him after years of playing sports. He's also been passed up by a number of players at his position, with a lot more younger ones (Borchering, etc.) coming behind him.

Morgan is another guy who had trouble staying healthy. When he was healthy, the results were okay, but nothing that made you say "WOW!". I know both Morgan and Parker well from their time in South Bend, and I wish them both the best.

Evans pitched well in South Bend, but was still only 5-7 with a 3.02 ERA. He was always a guy that would lose a lot of games, even when pitching well it seems. His career record was 25-37, and at the age of 26, the Diamondbacks have apparently decided he's not a big part of their future.

Official Roster on Monday

I know, I know...you all want the official Opening Day roster. However, even though players will be making their way to the South Bend soon, I do not have permission to release the roster until Monday morning.

This is so the Diamondbacks can make last minute changes, etc.

It'll be up on www.silverhawks.com as soon as it's final and I have the go ahead to release it.

Thanks!

It's Friday

Which means we are less than a week from Opening Day, and only 3 days away from the exhibition game with Notre Dame.

Monday's game with Notre Dame is at 5:30 PM, will be a 7-inning contest, and a portion of the proceeds will once again benefit the Ara Parseghian Medical Research Foundation for Niemann-Pick Type C Disease.

Thursday's regular season opener is at 6:30 PM against the Great Lakes Loons (Los Angeles Dodgers affiliate). For $12, you can be a part of our Dyngus Day Buffet in the Upper Deck. More details at www.silverhawks.com.

All games, including the exhibition, will be broadcast locally on 1620 ESPN Radio. They will also be streamed online. More details to follow on radio broadcasts!

Former Hawks Battling for Final Roster Spot?

According to Steve Gilbert they are.

He has some more at the link, but here's the interesting excerpt:

SPEAKING OF NORBERTO: It looks like it could come down to he and Clay Zavada for a spot in the bullpen and Zavada did not help his case by walking the first batter he faced -- to force in a run -- Wednesday.
