Obviously by now most of you have heard that Zach Walters was traded yesterday to the Washington Nationals organization in exchange for Major League pitcher Jason Marquis. The full story can be found on www.silverhawks.com in the headlines section.
South Bend is expected to announce a corresponding move tomorrow.
This is a huge blow to the team offensively. Already struggling to score runs, the Diamondbacks just traded away the best offensive player for the Silver Hawks. However, as we all know, winning at the big league level takes precedent over winning in single-A and these things happen from time to time. Now, more than ever, the other players need to take a look around and figure out who is going to step up and lead this team.

Former Hawks Pitcher Traded to Pittsburgh
Cesar Valdez, a 2007 Silver Hawks pitcher, was traded today to the Pittsburgh Pirates as the player to be named later in the Zach Duke deal.
Valdez was 7-10 with South Bend in '07, but had an impressive 3.41 ERA and 106 strikeouts. He appeared in nine games with the Diamondbacks in 2010 -- his first appearances in the Majors.

Former Silver Hawks Star Traded
Well, we knew the Diamondbacks would be active at the Winter Meetings, and it took all of half a day for them to make a splash.
Today, former Silver Hawks infielder Mark Reynolds was traded to the Baltimore Orioles for a couple of prospects. Before you ask, the answer is no, neither of the prospects will appear in South Bend because they both already have MLB experience.
Arizona also signed Melvin Mora to a contract. Mora is 38 years old, but it's a low-risk signing for GM Kevin Towers to fill the vacated third base hole left by Mark Reynolds.
I'm not qualified to analyze deals that the Diamondbacks make, but Steve Gilbert of mlb.com and Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic certainly have more experience in that area. Click the links to view their blogs.

Today's News and Notes
Off the Field News: The Silver Hawks announced today an exciting Saturday lineup featuring appearances from the ZOOperstars!, BirdZerk!, Myron Noodleman, and Jake the Diamond Dog. These national entertainment acts will enhance your experience at the Cove, and you can find more information at www.silverhawks.com. We also have ticket packages designed around these days, so act now.
On the Field News: The Diamondbacks today traded 2010 Silver Hawks pitcher Scottie Allen to the New York Yankees for infielder Juan Miranda. Miranda will play first base for the Diamondbacks to replace Adam LaRoche. I really liked Scottie, and thought he would be a good pitcher for years to come. That being said, the big league team takes precendent, and they desperately needed someone at first base.

Hawks Get All-Star Pitcher
The Silver Hawks today added LHP Tyler Skaggs to their active roster. He was the player to be named later in the Dan Haren trade with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Skaggs was an all-star with the Cedar Rapids Kernels, going 8-4 thus far this season.
However, the trade happened two weeks ago, and Skaggs had to wait to officially be traded because you can't trade a player within a year of him first signing after the draft. Therefore, he hasn't appeared in a game for over two weeks, and has just been running and doing long toss to stay active. He's probably quite a few days, if not a week or two, away from actually appearing in a game with the Silver Hawks.
Full story can be found on http://www.silverhawks.com/.

Reynaldo Navarro Traded
2009 Silver Hawks shortstop Reynaldo Navarro has been traded to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for reliever Carlos Rosa.
Navarro was in high-A Visalia, so you wonder if this will impact the Silver Hawks.

You Say Johermyn, I say Yohermyn
No matter how you spell it, former Lansing Lugnuts star Johermyn Chavez was traded from the Blue Jays organization along with Brandon League to Seattle for Brandon Morrow.
Chavez hit .283 with 21 homers and 89 RBIs for Lansing in 2009, and I could make a pretty strong case that he was one of the best all around players in the league. He probably would have gotten a lot more recognition had it not been for the fact that Lansing was terrible this season. The fact that he wasn't a postseason all-star is somewhat absurd.
(Editor's Note: If you don't understand the title of this post, it's because Chavez began the year spelling his name with a Y at the beginning, then changed midseason to go with a J at the beginning. I'm sure this was a mixup in translation, but it's still odd.)
(Editor's Note Part Two: It's ridiculous for me to include something called an "editor's note". There is no editor. The same person that writes these posts also edits them. That's right, I am the writer and editor all at once. I deserve a raise.)

Schlereth Likely Traded
The Arizona Diamondbacks are part of a big three-team trade, but are not getting any attention for it. Why? Because the big winners appear to be the New York Yankees in acquiring Curtis Granderson. As I'm writing this, it's not a 100% done deal, but it's very likely.
Make no mistake about it, the Yankees acquiring Granderson is huge. They need an outfielder, and he's a relatively young (28) talent. There probably is some concern about his declining batting average the last three seasons, but his home runs and RBI totals have all increased.
So why do we care? Well, as the headline of this post indicates, former South Bend Silver Hawks pitcher Daniel Schlereth is apparently part of the deal. Here's how it breaks down:
Yankees get Curtis Granderson (from Tigers)
Tigers get Max Scherzer and Daniel Schlereth (from D'Backs) and Austin Jackson and Phil Coke (from Yankees)
Diamondbacks get Edwin Jackson (from Tigers) and Ian Kennedy (from Yankees)
This doesn't happen very often, but I think this is a good trade for everyone involved. The Yankees get the outfielder they need, the Tigers get to unload some salary and get some very good young players, while the Diamondbacks get a much needed starter (Jackson) and a guy in Kennedy that could be a #5 starter, or at the very least eat some innings in the bullpen.
I only saw Schlereth pitch once against Dayton in 2008, but I was very impressed. He wasn't a Silver Hawk for very long, but I think most people that watched him here would have liked to see him pitch with the D'Backs for a number of years.

Former Silver Hawks Pitcher Traded
Well the first trade of the Baseball Winter Meetings went down yesterday, and it involved a former South Bend Silver Hawks pitcher.
Brian Bruney ('01-'02 Silver Hawks pitcher) was traded from the New York Yankees to the Washington Nationals for a player to be named later.
The article points out that Bruney missed a lot of the season with an injury, but do you know where he places the blame for the sore arm? The umpires.
According to the article, "The 27-year-old right-hander was 5-0 with a 3.92 ERA in 44 regular-season appearances but pitched just once for the Yankees from mid-April until mid-June because of a strained right elbow, an injury he blamed on time he spent warming up during an umpires' video review."

Ryne White Traded to Cubs
The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired Aaron Heilman today in a trade with the Chicago Cubs, and in the process, sent former South Bend Silver Hawks first baseman Ryne White to the Cubs organization.
White joined the Silver Hawks for the end of the 2008 regular season, playing in 12 games. He hit .358 with 13 RBIs in 12 regular season games with the Hawks. White also played in all seven postseason games for South Bend last season, batting .222 with a home run and three RBIs.
White was born in Chicago and played collegiately at Purdue University.

Two Tigers Prospects Traded
The Tigers got Jarrod Washburn today, but traded away two prospects to get him.
Mauricio Robles was pitching for West Michigan most of this season, having recently been promoted to high-A Lakeland. He faced the Silver Hawks on April 11th, throwing 5.0 shutout innings in earning the win.
Lucas French pitched for West Michigan a couple of years ago, so you should remember his name if you have been following the Hawks for a while now.
Story here.

Diamondbacks Make a Trade
Sending Felipe Lopez to the Brewers for two minor leaguers. Story can be found here.
This doesn't really impact the Silver Hawks I don't believe, as both the minor leagues coming from Milwaukee's organization are at a higher level. This could potentially have an impact in that it may slow the promotion or reassigning of other players throughout the system. So even though on the surface it doesn't change the Silver Hawks, ultimately, it may still have an impact in one way or another.
