Transaction Involving Former Hawk

Former Silver Hawk Vince Bongiovanni has been traded to the Blue Jays organization and will report to high-A Dunedin. Former Hawk Reid Mahon will take his place on the double-A Mobile roster.

The only thing I can find says that Bongiovanni has been traded for future considerations. Bongiovanni was 2-0 with a 6.00 ERA in five games with Mobile.

Lots of posts today, including four posts of pictures. Enjoy them all. Back with the lineup shortly.

Photos from Quad Cities - Part Four

I don't know if anyone cares about this other than me, but let's take a few shots of my radio booth in Quad Cities.

This is typically what my booth looks like everywhere I go. Main Equipment to my left. Scorebook directly in front of me. Binoculars, Tape, Highlighters, Etc. on the table. Computer to my right on the table top. Rosters on the chair to my right (didn't want to tape them to the walls...they are already torn up enough, didn't want to tear up the walls anymore). Stats, Notes, etc. on my equipment case even further to my right. Yes, there's a lot of cheat sheets in here...now way I could remember everything off the top of my head, although I do try.

This is my favorite photo I've taken of any ballpark. This would be my view from the booth if I sat in a relaxed pose. The window (which doesn't open by the way) does not go down nearly low enough to see home plate if you want to be in a comfortable position.

This is the view that I get if I sit up straight, and pull my chair in as far as possible. Yes, it's good to sit up straight so my mom would be happy. It's also good that I am skinny and don't have a big belly keeping me from getting close to the table. The negative here is that I'm only 5'9", so being a few inches taller would make this a better view.

From my booth, to the left.

From my booth, to the right. It would be a lot nicer if this giant window in front of me opened.

Hope you all enjoy the ballpark tour of Modern Woodmen Park in Quad Cities. I'll have pictures from Kane County over the weekend.

Photos from Quad Cities - Part Three

Standing inside the visitor's dugout on the first base side, looking out onto the field. Again, the grass is a bit choppy right now, but hopefully it'll be worked on soon. Right now, it's pretty much the biggest negative to an otherwise enjoyable ballpark.

From the first base concourse.

On this shot, I'm actually standing on a sidewalk down the right field line looking back towards the field. That is another sidewalk at the top of the hill, and then obviously the fence is just down the hill from the sidewalk you can see. At this point, I'm still 20 feet away from the river, so you can see just how far you'd have to hit one to splash it into the mighty Mississippi.

This picture and the next will give you a better idea of the distance from the river to the outfield wall. I'm on a sidwalk here in straightaway right field, note the Tiki Hut on the right side of the picture. Now, to the next picture...

There's the Tiki Hut again, so you have to clear the wall, the Tiki Hut, the sidewalk, the grass (in the above picture), the fence (in the above picture), and a little bit more land beyond the fence to get it into the river. Maybe you can do it on a bounce, but it would take an absolute bomb to get there on a fly.

Photos from Quad Cities - Part Two

Taken from behind the batter's eye, looking southeast with a view of Centennial Bridge crossing the Mississippi.

Again from behind the batter's eye, looking northeast at some ships/barges docked on the Illinois side of the Mississippi.

From just to the right of the batter's eye, shooting back towards home plate. The red area at the top is the press box. My booth is the smallest one in the middle, above the "errors" section of the line score (if you click the picture, it'll open larger and you can get a better view).

From the left field line, shooting back towards the press box to give you an idea of the number of rows of bleachers and seats.

This is an area down in the left field corner added last season where they will grow corn. Obviously it's dead in April, but by the end of the summer, the corn will rise and it'll make for a unique feature to the ballpark.

Photos from Quad Cities - Part 1

A view from the third base side out towards right field and the beautiful Centennial Bridge spanning the Mississippi.

From the concourse behind home plate, looking out onto the field. Not to point out a negative, but right now the field is really choppy around the plate and even out towards the pitchers mound and outfield. A lot of rain will do this, and a lot of work will be done to improve the field once the River Bandits leave town for a few days.

A restaurant/bar located behind home plate off the main concourse. You'd have a hard time seeing the field from here, but a lot of TVs and it looks like an enjoyable place to seek shelter from bad weather.

A view from the suite level down to the restaurant/bar talked about above.

This area is on the suite level, and clearly can be used for banquets, receptions, etc.

Rise and Shine

There is no part of my alarm going off at 6 AM that I enjoy. I know to some of you that is not early at all, but to those of us that work nights (particularly a doubleheader the night before), the alarm buzzing that early just rocks you out of your sleep.

Early morning bus to Quad Cities, with game one of the series tonight at 5 PM eastern time. Pregame show comes your way at 4:40.

I'll check back in with some updates on the blog once we get to Iowa.

Tuesday, April 28, 2009

On air soon...

Slight delay at the start...will be on the air with the pregame show soon.

Tarp Pulls...

...are not fun. We've taken it off then put it back on today. Still waiting for the rain to clear out, and then we get to take it off again. Sweet.

Doubleheader still on at 5:00 PM. Pregame at 4:40 on 1620 AM The Point or online at http://www.silverhawks.com/.

Rotation Update

The rainout yesterday has wreaked havoc on the rotation again, so here's how things shape up for the next few days:

Tonight Game One: RHP Trevor Harden
Tonight Game Two: RHP Rafael Quezada

Wednesday @ Quad Cities: RHP Brett Moorhouse
Thursday @ Quad Cities: LHP Wade Miley
Friday @ Quad Cities: RHP Ryan Cook

A Tale of Two Games

Interesting start to the Dayton series:

9 runs, 12 hits, and great pitching on Saturday.

1 run, 5 hits, and the pitching struggled on Sunday.

This, my friends, is the beauty of Minor League Baseball. Since we're playing the Dragons, a team I used to work for, let me borrow a phrase from their broadcaster Tom Nichols: You're only as hot as the next day's starter.

What that means is that you might be the best team in the league for 10 days in a row, but if your starter the next day isn't any good, then that winning streak is going to come crashing down. It also means that you could be red hot again, but if the other team's starter is on his game, he can shut you down in a hurry.

Today, it was Dayton's pitcher Matt Fairel who was red-hot, shutting down the Hawks offensively. Bounce back day tomorrow with Trevor Harden on the mound for the Silver Hawks. Harden has been great this season, and it would be nice to take Monday's game to guarantee a split at the very least.

Today's Lineup

Sorry for the lack of posts the last two days. Quick turnaround from Friday night into Saturday, and then I crashed last night. I'll have a post or two after the game tonight, and then all your normal daily goodness tomorrow.

Today's Lineup

Elmore - DH
Marte - LF
Diaz - CF
Gomez - 1B
Parker - 3B

Photos from Lansing - Part Two

A view from straightaway center (okay, so it's just off of center, but there is a scoreboard in straightaway center, and they wouldn't let me inside to take a picture...actually, I didn't ask, but the answer would have been no.)

Down the first base line, giving you an idea of the seats and bleachers.

From the concourse behind home plate.

They stopped making Oldsmobiles a couple years ago, but the stadium is still called Oldsmobile Park. According to the Lansing radio broadcaster, it was discussed with GM and they wanted to leave it that way as a nostalgic look back.

More pictures of the Oldsmobiles as you walk up to the stairs to the suite level/press box.

Photos from Lansing Part 1

Starting our journey around the outfield wall at Lansing's Oldsmobile Park. The wall down the left field line is 23 feet high. You have to clear the entire wall, up until the point where the metal railing breaks in. If you hit it over the railing, it's a home run. If you hit the wall to the left of the railing, and it richochets onto the lawn section, it's a ground rule double. Confused? Me too.

Clear the metal railing for a home run on the left side of this picture. If it goes through the railing, it's a ground rule double. You have to hit it over top the entire Miller Lite wall for it to be a homer. Clear the green wall everywhere else to the right of the Miller Lite wall, and it's a home run. Still confused? Me too.

Underneath the scoreboard, you just have to clear the main green wall. Ignore the green section between the top of the wall and the bottom of the scoreboard...that apparently means nothing. It's 412 feet just to the right of the scoreboard and then angles in on the right side of this picture to 360. Clear the railing = home run. Why not paint a yellow line so we can figure this out? Confused? Yep, so am I.

Another freakishly huge wall down the right field line. Clear it all for a home run. Again, a yellow line would be nice down the left side of the huge wall, so that there is a distinct home run line. But that would be too easy. Confused? C'mon, this is starting to make sense.

My view from the press box. It's lovely up here.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
LAST GAME: The Silver Hawks scored four times in the top of the seventh of game two to sweep a doubleheader from Lansing, winning 9-5 in game one and 5-4 in game two. Trailing 4-1 entering the final inning, South Bend sent eight batters to the plate, scoring four to take the lead. Reynaldo Navarro’s two-out, two-RBI double was the big hit in the inning, leading the Silver Hawks to their first lead in the game. In game one, Jake Elmore had 5 RBI, including a three-run homer in the fifth and the tie-breaking two-run double in the sixth inning. T.J. Hose won game one in relief of Wade Miley, while Daniel Vasquez was the winning pitcher in game two. Bayron Zepeda earned his first save of the year in game two.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
TEAM NOTES:
· Last night was the second doubleheader of the season, both against Lansing (split the first one, swept last night).
· The Silver Hawks overcame a 3-run deficit last night in game two, the largest come-from-behind win of the season.
· South Bend is going for their first series sweep against Lansing tonight. They have been swept once (by West Michigan).
· Silver Hawks pitchers have issued just 28 walks this season, fewest in the league.
· South Bend has played 10 of their first 13 games on the road, with one more versus Lansing before returning home.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________
INDIVIDUAL NOTES:
· Brendan Duffy went 0-for-4 yesterday, ending his hitting streak at seven games – a team high for 2009.
· Trevor Harden ranks T-2nd in the league with 17.0 IP. He is the first Hawks pitcher to get two wins on the season.
· Alberto Diaz and Jake Elmore have twice homered in the same game, including game one last night.
· Bayron Zepeda and Jordan Meaker have not allowed a run this season.

Get Away Day

Great wins last night. A 9-5 victory in game one, and a come-from-behind thriller for the 5-4 win in game two. Down 4-1 headed to the final inning, the Hawks rallied for four runs and the sweep of the doubleheader.

It's get-away day in Lansing, with the game at 7:05 PM. I have to check out of my room here in a few minutes, so I won't have any posts until I get to the ballpark around 2:30 or so.

Reminder, for Silver Hawks baseball, you will have to tune in to 1620 AM in South Bend (and the surrounding areas) starting tonight. If you listen online, just keep doing what you've been doing.

Finally, thanks to those that stuck with us through the technical problems last night. They have a repair man from the phone company at the stadium right now working on the line. Some of you have told me that it didn't sound that bad, and I appreciate knowing that, but it's still frustrating when the audio drops out for 5-10 seconds at a time.

For as many times as it dropped out for you listening at home, it dropped out twice as many times for me (we had a lot of problems during commercial breaks). In fact, we reconnected four or five times during commercial breaks that the listeners probably were not even aware of. Again, it's a problem with the phone line in Lansing, and has nothing to do with the radio station we are on, or why we are switching stations. That is a completely seperate issue.

Hopefully it'll be better tonight. Again, I thank you for your patience and we shouldn't have these problems again once we get out of Lansing.

A few posts coming later this afternoon. Stay tuned.

The Bats Are Alive

14 total hits, 8 runs, 4 doubles, 2 triples.

Impressive 8-1 victory for the Silver Hawks tonight over Lansing. Before I talk more about the offense (since it will get all the love), let me make sure I say something about the pitching.

Trevor Harden and Sean Morgan were phenomenal. First of all, Harden allowed just one run in 7.0 innings to become the first Hawks pitcher to reach two wins. And while yes, he did get a lot of support, he continued to set them down even after he had a big lead. Morgan, pitching in relief with the same large lead, didn't mess around. He struck out four batters in 2.0 innings to close it out.

Now, with that said, what a showing by the offense. Alfredo Marte, Nelson Gomez, and Reynaldo Navarro each had three hits, and they all had at least two extra-base hits (Navarro had three). Isaias Asencio added two singles. Nobody let up. When they had the Lansing pitchers on the ropes, the Hawks kept the pressure on and added up the runs.

Good win, doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 6:05, pregame at 5:45. Hopefully the guys will keep it up.

(FYI, Justin Parker's hit in the fourth inning was changed to an error after the game. I feel bad for Parker, but ultimately, I think it's the right call. Although sometimes I disagree with decisions made by the official scorer, keep in mind these guys only get one chance to see the play. There is no instant replay, no monitors to look at multiple angles to get it right. It's one look at it live, try to get it right, and then if need be, change it after the games after talking to the coaches.)

Tonight's Lineup

Duffy - DH
Elmore - 2B

LAST GAME: The Great Lakes Loons scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning to turn a one-run deficit into a one-run lead and defeated the South Bend Silver Hawks 3-2 on Sunday afternoon in Midland. Kyle Russell had an RBI double and Tony Delmonico followed with an RBI single against reliever Bryan Woodall (LP, 0-2) to push the Loons out in front. Javy Guerra (WP, 1-0) held South Bend to just one hit in two innings to earn his first win of the year.

· The Hawks have struck out 90 times this season, 3rd most in the Midwest League, but just nine K’s in last two games.
· Silver Hawks pitchers have walked 24 batters in nine games, tied for fewest in the league.
· South Bend has played seven of their first 10 games on the road, with the next four on the road at Lansing.

INDIVIDUAL NOTES:
· Brendan Duffy had two more hits Sunday, to extend his hitting streak to a season-best six games.
· Duffy’s 13 hits rank T-5th in the Midwest League, 3rd in average at .433, and 3rd in OBP at .528 on the season.
· Wade Miley is the only pitcher in the rotation to have not earned a decision yet.
· Alberto Diaz had a six-game hitting streak snapped Sunday. His streak is tied with Duffy for longest on the team this year.

Updated Pitching Rotation

There have been some changes in the pitching rotation because of the rainouts. Here's the upcoming rotation:

Lansing Series
Tonight: RHP Trevor Harden
Thursday GM 1: LHP Wade Miley
Thursday GM 2: LHP Taylor Sinclair for a couple of innings, followed by RHP Rafael Quezada
Friday: RHP Brett Moorhouse

Tuesday's Game Rained/Snowed Out (Updated)

No game tonight because of rain (currently) and snow (later tonight) in the forecast.

UPDATE: Regularly scheduled game tomorrow at 7:05 PM. Doubleheader Thursday beginning at 6:05 PM.

Greetings from Lansing

Had some car trouble this morning, so I'm a bit behind on what I wanted to do today. I'll have some info from the notes up once we get to the ballpark a little bit later.

It's chilly and rainy in Lansing, but for now, the game is still on. More later, check back (and make sure you check out the post below this one in terms of what to do if the internet feed drops out).

Thanks.

Internet Feed (Update)

Thanks for the emails everyone. I have a lot more listeners out there than I realized. Good to know.

As it turns out, the internet feed was lost yesterday sometime in the 8th inning. If this ever happens again, please please please dial the following number: 1-877-913-9739. Write it down, put it next to your computer, save it on your computer, post it on your refridgerator, whatever. If you ever lose the feed, call that number, tell them, and they can usually get it back quickly, but only if you call first and tell them there is a problem.

Again, call 1-877-913-9739 and they can get the feed back on.

Thanks, and sorry for the inconvenience at the end of yesterday's game.

Internet Feed

Did anyone lose the internet audio feed at the end of Sunday's game? I had a report that one person couldn't get the end of the game, and I'm curious if it was just an individual problem, or if everyone that was listening lost the feed.

If you could, please send me an email at oserey@silverhawks.com and let me know one way or another whether you heard the game all the way through the end on Sunday. We are certainly trying to make sure that this never happens, and knowing when you have problems with the feed helps us out tremendously. So again, if you could, please email me and let me know about Sunday.

Also, if you ever lose the feed during a game, feel free to email me at the above address as well. I always have my email open during the game, and while I usually don't have time to respond, if I start getting mass amounts of emails about people losing the feed, I can make some calls during commercial breaks to try to fix it.

Thanks,

Owen

Pregame Show Today

I'll typically have a pregame interview every day of the season, with the exception of Sundays. On Sunday afternoons, I'll have what I call "Summary Sunday", in which we basically just take a look at where the Silver Hawks rank in various categories.

We'll start by taking an in-depth look at the Midwest League standings. Then a look at the team ranks in the following categories:

Batting Average
Home Runs
Runs Scored
Stolen Bases
Strikeouts (hitters)
Walks (hitters)
Fielding Percentage
ERA
Runs Allowed
Strikeouts (pitchers)
Walks (pitchers)

Finally, we'll browse the Midwest League leaderboard for any Hawks players in the top 10 in average or ERA, and the top five in any other of the main stat categories.

Again, the pregame show starts at 2:45 PM eastern today, so be sure to tune in.

On the mound, Taylor Sinclair (ND) made a spot start, allowing one run in 3.0 innings. T.J. Dow Diamond Part 4

This is the fourth and final post of photos. I forgot to take pictures of the radio station in the press box. Yes, you read that right. The flagship station for Loons baseball is owned by the team, and operates out of the press box. I'll try to get some photos of that tomorrow. In the meantime, enjoy the photos I've taken thus far, of what I consider the best ballpark in the league. Note: Anytime I post photos on this blog, you should be able to click on them and it'll open up a larger version of the same image.

From the suite level, looking down on batting practice.

A sweet suite -- notice the flat screen on the wall, and how big this thing is.

The lobby of the suite level. There's a bar on the other side of the wall.

When you are buying food on the concourse, the stands are facing away from the game, so you can wait in line and still see all the action.

Glass doors at the end of the concourse seats that can be closed to keep it warm inside.

Kids playground down the right field line.

The widest concourse I have ever seen. There are garage-like doors that come down to close off the concourse, and they can heat them to have events on the concourse during the winter.
