Nobody wants to strike out more than any other player, but someone has to hold the record. And that someone is former South Bend Silver Hawks infielder Mark Reynolds, who is now playing with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Reynolds struck out a few times last night to break the previous record for most strikeouts in a season held by...Mark Reynolds.
Not that I'm wanting to make Mark Reynolds look bad, but let's compare Mark Reynolds over the last two seasons to a notable baseball Hall-of-Famer.
Mark Reynolds (2008-2009*)
Games: 297 (*through September 22nd)
Strikeouts: 410
Joe DiMaggio (1936-1951)
Games: 1,736
Strikeouts: 369
There was an article about this not too long ago on ESPN. It discussed how Reynolds really had a tough time dealing with striking out so much last year but that this year he didn't necessarily view the strikeout as that terrible of a thing. He mentioned that in certain situations it was better to swing for a home run (being that he is a power hitter with 42 HRs I believe) with 2 strikes in certain situations than to risk shortening up and grounding into a double play.
ReplyDeleteI can't argue too much with it as long as his run production is still good.
