Bobby Borchering - DH
Matt Davidson - 3B
Ramon Castillo - 1B
Alberto Diaz - RF
Matt Helm - LF
Errol Hollinger - C
David Narodowski - 2B

Tonight's pregame show is to be determined. There is an on-field ceremony that I will spend some time talking about. If time permits, I'll also play my interview with West Michigan broadcaster Ben Chiswick from yesterday since we had some technical issues and didn't play it yesterday.

Pregame coverage starts at 7:10 PM Eastern Time. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 PM Eastern Time.

From the Notes - June 30th

• The Silver Hawks are two games over .500 in a half for the first time in 2010.

• West Michigan has been shut out in three games and has scored just two runs in five games this half.

• The Silver Hawks have won three straight one-run games and improved to 13-12 in games decided by a single tally.

• South Bend goes for the sweep tonight. They have not swept a series since taking three from Dayton May 8th (DH) and 9th.

• First baseman Ramon Castillo has one hit in each of his first six games for South Bend.

• Randy Rodriguez is making a spot start today, replacing Mike Belfiore who is being skipped with general soreness.

• Chris Owings missed his fourth straight game Tuesday with plantar fasciitis. He is not in tonight's starting lineup.

Former Hawk Enright Promoted to Arizona

Former Silver Hawk pitcher Barry Enright will make his Major League debut tonight for the Arizona Diamondbacks at Busch Stadium against the St. Louis Cardinals. Enright pitched one game in relief for South Bend in 2007, earning the save while throwing 2.0 scoreless innings on August 17th at West Michigan.

Enright, a 2007 2nd round draft pick, is being promoted from Double-A Mobile where he was 4-1 with a 2.88 ERA in 14 starts this season. Enright takes the roster spot of Carlos Rosa, who was optioned to Triple-A Reno and was acquired by the Diamondbacks in the trade that sent 2009 Silver Hawk Reynaldo Navarro to Kansas City.

Former Silver Hawks with Arizona (MLB)

In our weekly examination of former Silver Hawks, we'll take a look at those who are playing for the parent club Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Last Two Games

What I don't like about the last two games: They were ugly games and the Silver Hawks managed to score just three runs.

What I love about the last two games: They were both wins!

I know that three runs in 18 innings against the Whitecaps doesn't scream revolution, but finding a way to win those games is huge for this club. For the first time this season, the Silver Hawks are two games over .500 in a half and have allowed for some wiggle room early on.

Hopefully it continues tomorrow.

Pregame Show Delayed

Our pregame show will be a little bit delayed today due to a technical issue at the station. We should have no problem getting the game on by 1 PM.

Rained Out

Sunday's game has officially been rained out. Full story will be on www.silverhawks.com in a matter of minutes.

MVP Vote Follow Up

Since I got absolutely ripped by a commenter in an earlier post, I want to clarify something.

There is no question that Matt Davidson was the first half MVP for the Silver Hawks. Chris Owings probably should have been second, although if you are a bigger fan of power numbers, then I have no problem with Bobby Borchering being second (Owings had a much higher batting average, Borchering had more homers and RBIs).

My problem with the vote was that I had never received more than 60 votes for any poll question, and that question got over 500 responses. There was some serious ballot box stuffing going on, which is why I called the vote a "joke".

Anyhow, I just wanted to clear that up so that everyone knows that I think the fans ultimately got it right in that Matt Davidson was voted the first half MVP.

Today's Lineup - June 27th

It's raining in Midland and it might for a while. There is no way this game is going to start on time at 3:05 PM. However, they are expecting to play today. We'll do the pregame show as normal at 2:45 PM and then send it back to ESPN Radio national programming at 3:05 or so until the start of the game.

Now, here is today's lineup:

David Nick - 2B
Victor Estevez - SS
Bobby Borchering - 3B
Matt Davidson - DH
Ramon Castillo - 1B
Alberto Diaz - CF
Matt Helm - LF
Andrew Fie - RF
Tyson Van Winkle - C

Diogenes Rosario - SP

No pregame interview today since it is Sunday. Instead, we'll do a full scoreboard update.

Pregame show at 2:45 PM. First pitch to be determined because of the rain.

Casting at the Cove

Wednesday night at Coveleski Stadium has been dubbed "Casting at the Cove" and is sponsored by Indiana Outdoor News. The night will feature a tribute to outdoor activities outside of baseball.

Louie Stout wrote a nice article about the event for the South Bend Tribune, which you can read by clicking here.

From The Notes - June 27th

• The Silver Hawks struck out 17 times yesterday – a new season high – but still won the game.

• South Bend hit two home runs in a game for the seventh time this season.

• South Bend is just 3 and 27 against the Loons over the last two seasons (2-14 last year, 1-13 this season).

• First baseman Ramon Castillo has one hit in each of his first four games for South Bend.

• Matt Davidson ranks T-4th with 10 homers, T-2nd with 46 RBIs, and T-2nd with 32 extra base hits.

• Keon Broxton struck out five times yesterday, the second time this season he had 5 K’s in a game against the Loons.

• Chris Owings missed his second straight game yesterday with a sore foot.

Tonight's Lineup - June 26th

Keon Broxton - CF
David Nick - 2B
Bobby Borchering - 3B
Matt Davidson - DH
Alberto Diaz - RF
Ramon Castillo - 1B
Matt Helm - LF
Errol Hollinger - C
Victor Estevez - SS

Brad Gemberling - SP

The pregame interview tonight will be with shortstop Chris Owings about his all-star game experience.

Pregame show begins at 6:45 PM tonight. First pitch is at 7:05 PM.

Happy Birthday Mark Haley!

South Bend manager Mark Haley is celebrating his birthday today. I think the best gift would be the Silver Hawks finally beating the Loons.

Game time will be 7:05 PM tonight.

Friday, June 25, 2010

Tonight's Lineup - June 25th

Keon Broxton - CF
David Nick - 2B
Bobby Borchering - DH
Matt Davidson - 3B
Alberto Diaz - RF
Ramon Castillo - 1B
Andrew Fie - LF
Tyson Van Winkle - C
David Narodowski - SS

Scottie Allen - SP

Pregame interview will be with manager Mark Haley. Pregame show is at 6:55 PM Eastern Time. First pitch is pushed back to 7:15 PM.

Featured Silver Hawk - Errol Hollinger

This week's featured Silver Hawk is catcher Errol Hollinger. In the article, Hollinger talks about what it was like to not be drafted and his plans for a career after baseball.

Today's Roster Move - June 25th

Infielder/Outfielder Victor Estevez has been activated for tonight's game. This brings the Silver Hawks roster back to 25 active players. He had been on the DL with a sore ankle since the middle of last week.

Game Time Change

Tonight's game will start at 7:15 PM instead of 7:05 PM. Pregame show will start at 6:55 PM.

Back To It...

After 4 days off, I'm ready to get this second half started.

The last poll question was ridiculous with some vote flooding, but according to the "fan vote", Matt Davidson edges out Bobby Borchering for first half MVP. Again, there was nothing official about this poll, and unfortunately it turned into a joke instead of a legitimate "who do you think has been the most valuable player" fan vote.

Anyhow, a new poll is up on the right.

All-Star Game Recap

Unfortunately, I forgot to bring my camera with me to Fort Wayne, so I don't have any pictures of my own to share with you all. Instead, I will provide links to some other photos taken from the game and share my thoughts on the experience in general.

I did take one picture with my phone. This was the view from our seats just to the third base side of home plate. The picture is of Matt Davidson batting in the first inning against West starter Trey McNutt.

Here are some photo galleries online. This one is from the Midwest League and focuses mostly on the Day One festivities, such as the Home Run Derby and Skills Challenge. Davidson hit eight homers in the first round before being eliminated in the second round of the Derby. Chris Owings participated in the Infield Throwing competition and Tyson Van Winkle finished in a three-way tie for first in the Catcher's Throwing competition.

This gallery is from the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette and has action shots from the game, including one of Chris, while the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel has more game shots and photos from the pre-game festivities. Finally, here are the photos that Owen took of Parkview Field last season.

Obviously the game was the main highlight, but the between-inning entertainment was also very fun. There was a dancing bat boy, Myron Noodleman, and the Zooperstars (my personal favorite). Each act brought many laughs throughout the crowd and Chris Owings even busted a move on the field.

All in all, the All-Star game was a great experience. Sorry again for the lack of original photos, but I hope these links are enough to help you get a picture of what it was like.

South Bend Notes from the All-Star Game

Here's more information on why Charles Brewer didn't start, Matt Davidson's home run derby appearance, and other tidbits from the All-Star game, courtest of Curt Rallo at the South Bend Tribuine.

Today's Roster Move

Starting pitcher Charles Brewer has been promoted to Visalia.

Read the full story at www.silverhawks.com in the news section.

Anytime you lose a player who ranks second in the league in ERA, it's going to hurt. Hopefully the rest of the rotation and pitching staff will step up. Unfortunately, I think we all knew this move was coming, we just hoped it wouldn't happen.

Good luck to Charles as he moves on. He certainly proved that he could dominate this league.

It appears as if Diogenes Rosario is going to be moved into the rotation to fill the void.

All Star Game Results

I know I haven't posted much over the last few days, but just like everyone else, I sometimes need a break. I also have two nieces and a nephew that I'm seeing for the first time in months, and they get a lot more of my attention than baseball does right now.

As far as the all-star game goes, the East won 6-2.

Unfortunately, no Silver Hawks player had a hit (Chris Owings walked), and surprisingly, neither Charles Brewer nor Eric Smith pitched. I thought both were available and I'm pretty sure the Silver Hawks told the Fort Wayne staff that they could both go an inning, but neither one was called upon.

Casey went to the game and hopefully will have some pictures to post in the next day or two. I might not be back on the blog until Friday from Great Lakes, so I can enjoy the rest of the time with my family.

More on Van Winkle to All Star Game

I received an email question tonight asking why Tyson Van Winkle went to the all-star game instead of Errol Hollinger.

The short answer: I don't know.

The long answer: When an opening happens on Sunday afternoon when the game is on Tuesday, there is a scramble to find somebody to fill the spot. Sometimes they take someone who is geographically close, sometimes they take the best available player, sometimes they take a player who has nothing else to do for the next couple of days.

Remember, they have to find a replacement in less than 24 hours and many other players have already booked flights or other plans.

I'm not saying Tyson Van Winkle doesn't deserve to go, but Errol Hollinger clearly had better offensive number. Van Winkle is a great defensive catcher and has good at-bats, but he's been slumpling lately.

I have no idea if Hollinger was asked first. I have no idea if another catcher from another team was asked first. All I know is that Tyson Van Winkle will be in Fort Wayne on Tuesday playing for the Eastern Division All-Stars.

I hope this helps.

Van Winkle Added as All-Star

Catcher Tyson Van Winkle has been added to the Eastern Division All-Star team. I don't know if someone got hurt or promoted, but Van Winkle will fill an open spot on the roster.

Congrats to Tyson.

That now makes five all-stars from the Silver Hawks (Matt Davidson, Chris Owings, Charles Brewer, and Eric Smith were named back when the teams were originally selected).

Sunday, June 20, 2010

Today's Lineup - June 20th

Keon Broxton - CF
Chris Owings - SS
Bobby Borchering - DH
Matt Davidson - 3B
David Nick - 2B
Ramon Castillo - 1B

Diogenes Rosario - SP

Today's game starts at 2:00 PM Eastern Time. Instead of an interview, we'll take an in-depth look at the Midwest League scoreboard and standings. Pre-game coverage starts at 1:40 PM Eastern Time.

Playoff Scenarios

On the final day of the season, here's what can happen around the league:

Eastern Division:
-Lake County leads Great Lakes by one game.
-Both teams have clinched a playoff spot.
-If Lake County wins, they are the first half champion.
-If both teams lose, Lake County is the first half champion.
-If Lake County loses but Great Lakes wins, Great Lakes is the first half champion.

Western Division
-Cedar Rapids is the first half champion.
-Quad Cities is the first half wild card.

MVP Poll

For those of you wondering, the MVP poll on the right side of this blog is just for fun. We don't hand out a first half MVP award (or a second half MVP award for that matter).

I thought this would be an interesting way to see who the fans thought was the most important player on the team. To be completely honest, it probably is either Matt Davidson or Chris Owings (with all due respect to Bobby Borchering's power numbers and Errol Hollinger's batting average).

I never envisioned that people would stuff the ballot box the way they have. I did the same thing last year, and we had a normal vote total with a good debate.

So for those of you worried about the "popularity contest", know that it is all in fun and the results really don't mean anything.

Expanding on Last Night

Ugh...that was another tough one last night. The Silver Hawks allowed three runs in the bottom of the seventh to lose 4-3. In the process, the Hawks fall to 0-11 versus Great Lakes this season.

If you were still listening in the postgame show, I said something along these lines: "At 0-11 against them, you are probably starting to hate the Loons. And I'm right there with you. However, you still have to credit them for what they've done, and that is a 41-24 record and wrapping up a playoff spot."

When the final out was recorded last night, the Silver Hawks players watched from the dugout as the Loons piled out of the dugout and danced in celebration on the field. They soaked their manager with gatorade and gave him a shaving cream pie to the face.

At times, watching another team celebrate will drive you nuts. But knowing that the Silver Hawks are young, I think it was good that they saw that. They saw how much fun it was for the Loons. They saw how excited Great Lakes was to wrap up that playoff spot in the first half. And I'm sure they felt jealousy building inside them because they too want to be a playoff team.

So now, you have a picture to go along with the goal. You want to celebrate like that? Go do something about it. You want to soak your manager with gatorade? Go out and dominate the second half. Work as hard as you've ever worked to make sure that you get to experience the same joys that the Loons had last night.

Player Interviews -- A Note for the Parents

Some of you have asked me if an archive of the interview I did with your sons is available online anywhere. Unfortunately, our games are not archived this year.

However, I do keep every interview (and every game for that matter) that I have done this year.

If you want a copy of the interview(s) I have done with your sons, please just email me at oserey@silverhawks.com and let me know. Give me a couple of days to respond because of travel and having to go back and find the interview, and I'd be glad to email you a copy.

Pregame show starts at 6:45 PM Eastern. First pitch is at 7:05 PM Eastern.

Thank You!

When I contacted the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America this winter, I really had no idea what I wanted to do. All I knew is that I was in a position to finally help out and to raise awareness for this disease that I've dealt with for about 15 years now.

Then, we agreed to have the walk at Coveleski Stadium, and I knew I had a big challenge on my hands. I wanted to go above and beyond the recommended fundraising amount. The CCFA tells you to set your goal at $250. I ridiculously set mine at $1500, knowing that I've never asked friends and family for any money for Crohn's awareness. I figured if I got to $1,000, I'd be thrilled.

I currently sit at $1,350, and have 4 days left to hit my goal. I never would have reached this point without your support, and for that, I thank all of you. Some of the people whose names appear on the donation list and the amount they have given is simply amazing. In many cases, some of you have given $10, $20, or even $50 to someone who you have never met, but listen to on a nightly basis. It is your support that quite honestly means the most to me.

Thanks again, and if you still want to donate, there are a few days left. Just go here: http://online.ccfa.org/goto/owenserey

Woodall Named to California League All-Star Team

Bryan Woodall, a 2009 Silver Hawk reliever, was the only member of the Visalia Rawhide named to the California League team that will take on the best from the Carolina League on June 22 in the 2010 California-Carolina League All-Star Game. In 22 relief appearances this season, Woodall has allowed only one earned run for a 0.30 ERA and a record of 4-2 with five saves. Here's a link to the rosters for each team, which feature a lot of other former Midwest League players.

Last year for South Bend, Woodall posted a 4-5 record with a 3.24 ERA and two saves in 36 relief appearances. After struggling early in the season, Woodall turned it around and became one of the Silver Hawks' most reliable options out of the pen.

Montero Activated from DL

This happened a couple of days ago, but former Silver Hawk catcher Miguel Montero was activated from the disabled list on June 12th. Montero was off to a good start this season, hitting .500 (6/12 in four games) with 3 RBI before he hurt his knee trying to beat out a grounder.

In two games since his activation, Montero has gone 2/5 with an RBI, double, walk, and run scored. Here's an article talking about how the Diamondbacks hope the return of their catcher will provide a much needed spark.

Montero played with the Silver Hawks in 2004, hitting .263 with 11 HR and 59 RBI in 115 games.

Sunday's Game Rained Out

Too much rain in Cedar Rapids to play today. The game has been rained out.

The full story can be read on www.silverhawks.com.

Off day on Monday, then off to Midland, Michigan on Tuesday.

Good Morning from Cedar Rapids

It is rainy, gloomy, and there is a ton of water on the field right now (along with the tarp).

However, the folks here in Cedar Rapids are optimistic that they will be able to get the game in. Game time is scheduled for 3:05 PM Eastern Time.

If anything changes, I'll let you know.

Poll Results - New Question

Here are the results from the last poll question, asking how important it would for the Silver Hawks to get back to .500 in the first half (total votes and percentages bolded).

Doesn't mean anything...records reset at 0-0 anyhow 5 (17%)

Somewhat important 2 (7%)

It would be huge for this team's confidence 19 (67%)

.500? I'm not giving up on a first half playoff spot yet! 2 (7%)

A new question is up asking about first half offensive MVP (With all due respect to all the players, I've only included the regular starters on the list, and even some of them probably could have been left off in a true MVP race. To be completely honest, this is really a two or three horse race).

Eric Smith Article

Bill Paxton of the Connecticut Post recently talked to Eric Smith and manager Mark Haley for an article that appeared in today's Connecticut Post.

You can read about Smith's college career and how he angers hitters with his quick pace at this link.

Featured Silver Hawk - Archive

Since the team has been on the road all week and I haven't had a chance to interview a player, there will not be a new "Featured Silver Hawk" today. However, the previous four stories are now all available to view on the "Featured Silver Hawk" page on the Silver Hawks website.

The archive page is located under the "Roster" tab and will be updated every week. As of now, it has links to the stories on David Nick, Keon Broxton, Charles Brewer, and Brian Budrow. Check back next week for an article on a new player.

20 More Draft Picks

Below is the press release from the Arizona Diamondbacks about their final day of the MLB draft.

D-BACKS SELECT 20 PLAYERS ON FINAL DAY OF 2010 DRAFT
6 Local Products Among Players Selected

(PHOENIX) — The Arizona Diamondbacks announced that they selected an additional seven pitchers, seven infielders, four outfielders and two catchers in rounds 31-50 on the final day of Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft. The D-backs completed the draft with 25 pitchers (20 right-handed and 5 left-handed), 14 infielders, eight outfielders and three catchers.

Of the 50 players the D-backs selected in the draft, 39 come from the college ranks.

"We are extremely excited about the quality of arms we were able to select throughout the draft,” said D-backs’ Director, Scouting Tom Allison. “We are also excited about the depth of athletic position players we were able to add. All of these young men were identified by our scouting staff as future Major Leaguers. We look forward to signing many of them and watching their careers develop. I would like to thank all of our scouts and the many others within the organization that worked so diligently to allow for us to select these 50 young men. I also would like to thank Josh Byrnes, Derrick Hall and ownership for their continued support of the scouting department."

Highlights from today’s selections include:
• Catcher Andrew Whittington (33rd round) broke the Gulf South Conference’s 12-year-old hit streak record after collecting a hit in 37 straight games this season with Southern Arkansas University. He was named a 2010 Division II third team All-American by Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), Daktronics and National Collegiate Baseball Writer’s Association (NCBWA).
• Six players with Arizona ties were selected: right-handed pitcher Konner Wade (35th round) hails from Chaparral High School in Scottsdale; infielders Derek Casillas (40th round) and Jorge Flores (46th round) were selected from Hamilton High School in Chandler; right-handed pitcher Casey Upperman (47th round) was chosen from Yavapai College in Prescott; and right-handed pitcher Kenneth Sigman (48th round) and infielder Trey Ford (50th round) were selected from South Mountain Community College in Phoenix.
• Infielder Michael Weber (37th round) was named a Primetime Performer of the Week by CollegeBaseball360.com twice during the 2010 season with Washington State University.
• Right-handed pitcher Michael McGee (41st round) was named a 2010 Louisville Slugger NCAA Division I third team All-American and All-ACC first team selection for Florida State University. He was also named one of 30 semifinalists for the 2010 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award and a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy, which honors the nation’s top collegiate player, after posting a 4-0 record with 9 saves and a 0.41 ERA on the mound, while also leading the Florida State Seminoles with 14 home runs and 64 RBI.
• Outfielder Christopher Jarrett (42nd round) was named to the 2010 American Baseball Coaches Association All-American second team, as well as receiving the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Most Valuable Player and first team All-Mideast Region honors with Anderson University.
• Infielder Eric Groff (46th round) was named to the All Colonial States Athletic Conference first team for Keystone College.

This is Arizona’s 15th First-Year Player Draft since being awarded an expansion team from Major League Baseball in 1995.

The pregame interview is with Mark Haley to get his thoughts on the four Silver Hawks named as all-stars yesterday.

Pregame show begins at 7:40 PM Eastern Time. First pitch is at 8:00 PM Eastern Time.

Changes and Community Service

First, two changes to tell you about:

1) Chris Owings was given a hit in the top of the first inning, instead of what was initially ruled as an error on the third baseman. I speculated on the air that this would be changed, and it was.

2) Cardinals #1 prospect Shelby Miller is not pitching today for Quad Cities. Apparently his arm is tired and he's being skipped. Instead, lefty Dan Calhoun will start.

Now, on to a story in the South Bend Tribune about the Silver Hawks and their efforts with community service. This is a nice piece and lets you know some of what the players do off the field for the South Bend community: http://www.southbendtribune.com/article/20100608/SPORTS12/100609506/1001/Sports

Arizona Selects 18 pitchers in First 30 Rounds

(PHOENIX) — The Arizona Diamondbacks announced that they selected an additional 17 pitchers in rounds 2-30 of Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft today after drafting Texas A&M right-handed pitcher Barret Loux with the sixth overall pick yesterday. The D-backs also selected a catcher, four outfielders and seven infielders today.

Of the 30 players the D-backs have selected in the draft thus far, 24 have come from the college ranks.

“We felt this draft pool was very deep in pitching going into the spring, especially in the high school ranks,” said D-backs’ Director, Scouting Tom Allison. “We tried to identify the positive physical and mental attributes of Major League pitchers and we were fortunate to select many prospects that we feel met this criteria in the top few rounds. We look forward to watching them develop as baseball players and young men.”

Today’s selections of note include:
• Right-handed pitcher James (J.R.) Bradley (2nd round, 56 overall), who was named the 2010 West Virginia Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year and 2010 Kanawha Valley Player of the Year following his senior season at Nitro High School (W. Va.). He compiled a 12-0 record with a 0.67 ERA and 102 strikeouts over 63.0 innings on the mound, while posting a .500 batting average with 12 home runs, 15 doubles, 51 RBI and 49 runs scored.
• Right-handed pitcher Robby Rowland (3rd round, 88 overall), who is the son of former Major Leaguer Rich Rowland, tossed a perfect game on April 14 and earned Redwood Empire’s Overall Athlete of the Year.
• Right-handed pitcher Kevin Munson (4th round, 121 overall), who was named the 2010 All-Colonial Athletic Association Pitcher of the Year with James Madison University, as well as being named a Louisville Slugger Third-Team All-American.
• Left-handed pitcher Cody Wheeler (5th round, 151 overall) was named a Louisville Slugger Second-Team All-American at Coastal Carolina University after going 10-0 with a 4.05 ERA with 101 strikeouts in 15 starts this season. He played for the Team USA National Collegiate team last summer after earning Big South Pitcher of the Year honors that season.
• Right-handed pitcher Blake Perry (6th round, 181 overall) was named a Rawlings Honorable Mention and All-Florida Region Preseason All-American.
• Right-handed pitcher Jeffrey Shields (7th round, 211 overall) led the Alabama Community College Conference with 12 wins while his 1.60 ERA and 98 strikeouts were second during his final season at Chattahoochee Valley Community College.
• Right-handed pitcher Blake Cooper (12th round, 361 overall) earned Collegiate Baseball’s Third-Team All-American honors at University of South Carolina-Columbia.
• Left-handed pitcher Kevin Ziomek (13th round, 391 overall) earned the 2010 Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year honors at Amherst Regional High School.
• Right-handed pitcher Derek Eitel (17th round, 511 overall) was a dual-sport star at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology where he set several school records as the starting quarterback.

Congratulations to Matt Davidson, Chris Owings, Charles Brewer, and Eric Smith for being named Midwest League All-Stars today.

Certainly well-deserved for all of them, and hopefully they'll get a chance to showcase their skills with a big day on June 22nd in Fort Wayne.

More on Loux

Here is the text of the press release the Diamondbacks sent out about their selection:

(PHOENIX) — The Arizona Diamondbacks announced today they have selected Barret Loux with the sixth overall selection in Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft.

Loux, a 6-5, 225-pound right-handed pitcher, was named a Louisville Slugger NCAA Division I Third-Team All-American, First-Team All-Big 12 and is a semifinalist for the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award for his season at Texas A&M University. The junior is 11-2 with a complete game and a 2.60 ERA (30 earned) over 104.0 innings pitched in 16 starts this season. He has limited opponents to a .197 average with 33 walks and 136 strikeouts. Loux also led the Big 12 with 126 strikeouts.

In 44 career starts over three seasons, Loux is 20-7 with a 3.49 ERA, allowing 116 runs (94 earned) in 242.1 innings and a .214 opponents average with 89 walks and 279 strikeouts. As a sophomore, he was named Second-Team Academic All-Big 12. As a freshman, he was named Honorable Mention All-Big 12 and Second-Team Freshman All-America by Rivals.com.

“We’ve scouted Barret since high school and have seen him grow as a pitcher and as a person at Texas A&M, where he was the team’s Friday night starting pitcher this season,” said D-backs’ Director, Scouting Tom Allison. “He had a successful season this year and is now in the midst of leading his team in a must-win game against the University of Miami tonight to advance to the NCAA Super Regional against Florida this weekend. We believe Barret has all of the physical and mental ingredients to be a starting pitcher in the Major Leagues and look forward to him joining the D-backs soon.”

The 21-year-old was originally drafted in 2007 out of Stratford (Texas) High School in the 24th round by the Detroit Tigers.

Texas A&M is playing University of Miami in the Coral Gables Regional elimination game tonight with the winner advancing to the Super Regional to face the University of Florida.

Loux is the 15th first-round selection for the D-backs and is the ninth player taken from the college ranks. The D-backs had two first-round selections in 2003 and 2009.

The draft will continue tomorrow with rounds 2-30 and Wednesday with rounds 31-50.

D'Backs Make 1st Round Selection

Sorry for the lack of posts today, but an off day is an off day afterall.

Anyhow, the Diamondbacks just made their first round selection in the draft. They took RHP Barret Loux from Texas A&M. Looks like he is 6'5", 220 pounds.

Here's a link to his player bio page at Texas A&M's website.

Here's some other profile piece on him. It seems that some people had him going late first round or not in the first round at all. Interesting.

Finally, here's the mlb.com video on Loux.

Pregame coverage is at 1:40 PM Eastern Time. First pitch is at 2:00 PM.

Willis Has Solid Debut

The Dontrelle Willis experiment got off to a good start last night as the lefty picked up a win while throwing six shut out innings in Arizona's 4-3 victory over the Rockies. Willis, who showed his hitting prowess with the Marlins, also singled and scored a run. Quotes from Willis and manager A.J. Hinch as well as video highlights can be found here.

After losing 10 in a row, the Diamondbacks have won two consecutive contests against the Rockies. They go for the sweep today, but it will be a tough task as Colorado will throw Ubaldo Jimenez.

My pregame interview today is with Bees' Broadcaster Nick Devlin, giving us a scouting report of the Western Division.

Pregame show begins at 5:10 PM. First pitch is at 5:30 PM.

Today's Roster Moves

Four of them for you today....

RHP Adam Worthington joins team from extended spring training.
INF Victor Estevez rejoins the team from high-A Visalia.
C Jae Yun Kim sent back to extended spring training.
LHP Keny Sosa released from Diamondbacks organization.

Full story is here.

Owen's analysis (which means absolutely nothing):

Worthington is a strong reliever who had great numbers with Missoula, he'll be a welcome addition to the bullpen and hopefully can be a strong 7th or 8th inning type.

Sosa was getting too old to be at this level, and unfortunately just wasn't performing up to the level the Diamondbacks wanted. He is free to sign with any other team, and we wish him the best of luck.

Kim was just here to fill in while Hollinger was hurt. Three catchers are rarely needed, and with Van Winkle and Hollinger hitting as well as they have been, Kim wasn't going to get the playing time he needs to develop. He'll end up with Missoula or Yakima, and likely will be back with South Bend next year (if not sooner).

Finally, Estevez is a solid utility player who can play anywhere on the diamond, which is why he went up to Visalia in the first place. He certainly won't play every day, but he's good to have if somebody else needs a day off. You'd like to see his average go up from the .200 mark he's been around all season (at both South Bend and Visalia).

Featured Silver Hawk - Brian Budrow

This week's Featured Silver Hawk is relief pitcher Brian Budrow. The Arizona native talks about his college career, which started as part of two national championship teams at Oregon State and ended in the NCAA Tournament with Utah, as well as his love for the outdoors. New Diamondbacks Spring Training Facility Named

Some of you may be aware, but the Diamondbacks and Rockies are constructing a new spring training site in Scottsdale that they'll move in to next year. The name of the facility was announced today as "Salt River Fields At Talking Stick". The name embraces the location of the field, which is in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. More information about the new complex can be read here.

Salt River Fields will replace the former spring training home of Arizona, Tucson Electric Park, where the Diamondbacks had trained since the team's inception. The new facility will feature 12 practice fields that many current and former Silver Hawks will inhabit next March.

First pitch is at 7:00 PM. Pregame show begins at 6:40 PM.

Poll Results - Western Division

The overwhelming majority of voters feel that the MWL made a big mistake in restructuring the schedule and that every team should visit the other 15 cities in the league at least one time. I'm not shocked at all by those results, because I feel the exact same way (even if it means more time on a bus).

A new question is up on the right side of the page asking your thoughts on the finish to the first half: Is it important for the confidence of a young team to get to the .500 mark in the first half?

Who's Your Favorite Super Hero?
