The Loons Take a Hit
Today, the Dodgers acquired Ted Lilly and Ryan Theriot from the Chicago Cubs. That's not really why I am posting however.
The reason for this post is that the Dodgers sent pitcher Brett Wallach to the Cubs organization. Wallach was 6-0 for the Great Lakes Loons this season.
That marks the second pitcher this week that the Loons have lost in a trade, as they also lost Elisaul Pimentel to the Royals organization for Scott Podsednik.
Plus, Ruby de la Rosa and Will Savage have been promoted in the last month. The Loons have lost four starters since the All-Star Break, and suddenly, this league looks a bit more winnable for some of the other teams.

More Trades Involving Midwest Leaguers (Updated)
First of all, former Silver Hawks infielder Pedro Ciriaco was just traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates along with catcher Chris Snyder for outfielder Ryan Church, infielder Bobby Crosby and right-handed pitcher D.J. Carrasco.
Also, remember Nick Greenwood? He pitched four innings last night against South Bend for the Fort Wayne TinCaps? Yeah, he got traded today as part of the Jake Westbrook/Ryan Ludwick deal.
UPDATE: I should have mentioned that Corey Kluber was included in the Jake Westbrook/Ryan Ludwick deal as well. Kluber pitched for Fort Wayne in 2008.

Ortega Promoted; Helm Reassigned to Missoula
In conjunction with the Arizona Diamondbacks, the South Bend Silver Hawks have announced that closer Yonata Ortega has been promoted to high-A Visalia. Additionally, infielder/outfielder Matt Helm has been reassigned to rookie level Missoula of the Pioneer League. More information can be read in the official press release.
Ortega is leading the Midwest League in saves and hasn't blown one since June 6. In Missoula, Helm will have the opportunity to play his natural infield position.
The South Bend roster currently stands at 23 active players plus two on the disabled list. The Midwest League allows for 25 active players.

Edwin Jackson Traded from Diamondbacks to White Sox
Just a few days after dealing Dan Haren, the Diamondbacks traded away another starting pitcher. Edwin Jackson was dealt to the White Sox for starting pitcher Daniel Hudson, the third ranked prospect in the Sox' organization according to Baseball America, and 19 year old left-handed pitcher David Holmberg.
Jackson did throw a no-hitter on June 25, but the season overall has been a bit of a struggle for the righty. Even with the no-no, Jackson is 6-10 with a 5.16 ERA. There is speculation that the Sox will trade Jackson to the Nationals in a deal for Adam Dunn, but we'll see what happens before tomorrow's trade deadline.
Holmberg was selected in the 2nd round of the 2009 draft by the White Sox. So far this season, Holmberg is 1-1 with a 4.46 ERA in eight games started for Great Falls of the Pioneer League (same league that Missoula plays in). Holmberg was rated as the eighth best prospect in the White Sox' organization according to Baseball America.

Deadline Deals involving Midwest Leaguers
It happens every year, but twice yesterday a current Midwest League player was included in a trade that sent a major leaguer from one team to another.
First, the Detroit Tigers acquired Jhonny Peralta from the Indians, and they traded West Michigan Whitecaps pitcher Giovanni Soto straight up for him (imagine that, a single-A pitcher being traded one-for-one with a major leaguer!). In an odd twist, Soto and the Whitecaps were playing at Lake County (Indians affiliate), so he packed up his bag, walked down the hall, and joined his new teammates. There's a chance Soto will pitch against his former teammates in one of the next two nights.
Secondly, the Dodgers traded for Scott Podsednik and sent Great Lakes Loons pitcher Elisaul Pimentel to the Royals as part of the deal. Pimentel was tied for the league lead in victories.

Wow
The word "Wow" is about all I can say about today's win over Fort Wayne. I think (and hope) my call of Ender Inciarte's homer expressed both excitement and surprise that he took a two-out, two-strike pitch over the wall in right field was his first home run this season, lifting the Silver Hawks to a 4-3 lead (and eventual win).
Ender will get all the praise, and rightfully so. He had a tremendous day with three hits and three RBIs. Casey and I had talked earlier in the game about getting the bottom of the lineup to produce, and they came through in a big way today.
One overlooked part of today's win is the bullpen work. Four scoreless innings of relief gave the Silver Hawks a chance to win by keeping the game within striking distance.
As we always say, it's just one victory out of a 14o-game schedule, so let's not make it out to be a monumental win. However, let's see how both teams respond over the next two days and see if there has been a momentum swing for either team.

Off Day Thoughts
Some random thoughts from my mind on this off day:
*I said that I won't use that this team is young as an excuse for the second half, and I stand by that. However, I think it's a "reason". Being young is a reason why the team is struggling to win games, but it's not an excuse for not winning.
*I think that if you brought this year's Silver Hawks back for a second time in the Midwest Leauge next year, that they would dominate without too much problem.
*I also think that with 40 games to play (including 26 against other playoff contenders), this year's club still has a chance of making the playoffs. I know some fans are ready to give up on this year...I'm not.
*I know that it's an unbelievable difference at the Cove when the seats are filled like they were on Monday night. Trust me when I tell you that the Cove is a great baseball experience, and if you haven't been yet, please come join us before the season is over (or even if you've been out once, come back again).
*I'm thrilled to report that the full-time staff rallied to defeat the interns in a softball game earlier today. I am also very happy to report that there were no injuries.
*Speaking of interns, I don't know if it's because I'm his "boss", but I'd also like to thank Casey Richards for losing a ball in the sun in my first at-bat, allowing me to reach base. I followed with two clean singles to finish 2-for-3 (assuming we are charging Casey with an error).

Saturday's game has already been rained out due to heavy rains and wet grounds at Coveleski Stadium.
It will be made up as a doubleheader on Monday beginning at 5 PM.
So....

Sunday: One Game at 2:00 PM
Monday: Two Games at 5:00 PM
Starting pitchers are likely just pushed back a day, but I'll let you know if anything changes in the rotation.

Enright Pitching Well for Diamondbacks
A few weeks ago we posted that former Silver Hawk Barry Enright was going to make his Major League debut for the Diamondbacks after being called up straight from Double-A. Enright's stint with Arizona has been a success thus far, as he holds a 2-2 record and 2.66 ERA through four starts.
Bob McManaman of the Arizona Republic writes that Enright is making a case to remain in the rotation throughout the year and in to next season. The article also contains some information on Enright's background and his path to the Diamondbacks.
Enright pitched for the Silver Hawks in 2007, throwing 2.0 scoreless innings in one appearance before being promoted to Visalia.

Another Broxton Article
Owen linked the article that Curt Rallo wrote in the South Bend tribune a couple of days ago about Keon Broxton and his propensity for hitting triples. Rallo also writes the Midwest League notebook for the league's website, and it featured Broxton this week. This article is similar but has a few differences, as well as notes from other teams around the league. It can be read by clicking this link.

Back in South Bend
Well, the team is back in South Bend after posting a much needed 4-1 victory today. Keon Broxton came through with four RBIs today, including a solo homer and a three-run triple. The pitching (starting and bullpen) was fantastic.
As I said on the air a number of times, 3-6 on the road trip sounds a whole lot better than 2-7.
And as an added bonus, Lansing and Fort Wayne both lost, so the Silver Hawks are just three games out of a playoff spot with 46 to play.
I realize the team is only 9-15 in the second half. I realize that the team's overall record is a lot worse.
But I also realize that Great Lakes and Lake County are moving to the top again, so a 3rd or even 4th place finish in the second half standings might still get you into the playoffs by the time you take those teams out of the mix.
So the way I look at it, we have two choices: Give up on them and ride out the string, or get on board and root this team towards the playoffs. I choose the latter. Are you with me?

First Round Pick
I'm blogging up a storm today (hotel rooms can be boring at times).
I noticed this in the latest Prospects Chat with Jim Callis of Baseball America:
Raoul (Tucson, AZ): Jim, you didn't include Barret Loux in your list of first round picks that might not sign. Will the Diamondbacks walk away from the guy with a bum shoulder and take the 7th pick next year or will they sign him to a reduced price?
Jim Callis: I should have mentioned the possibility of Loux. Could go either way on that one. The Diamondbacks didn't want to go over slot, which is why they took Loux, so they may be more inclined to sign him at a discount than have to haggle with an unprotected pick next year.
Just felt that it was relevant event to be blog-worthy.

Poll Results
The question was: As of July 8th, the Silver Hawks are five games over .500 against everyone in the MWL except the Great Lakes Loons. Does this change your opinion on the team?
The results are as follows:
Wow, I didn't realize that. I have renewed faith in this club. 10 votes (33%)
I knew that and I still think the team will make the playoffs. 12 votes (40%)
I knew that, but I don't think they'll make the playoffs. 4 votes (13%)
I didn't know that, but it doesn't change my view. 4 votes (13%)
So most of you still think the Silver Hawks will make the playoffs (current three game losing streak not factored into this poll of course).
A new question is on the right with a simple yes or no response today.

Tomorrow's Probable Pitcher
They keep telling me that LHP Mike Belfiore will start tomorrow's game.
While that is good news for Mike and the Silver Hawks, it's bad news for somebody else on the team. At 25 active players, somebody is going to have to either be put on the DL or moved somewhere else for Mike to be activated.
I guess I'll find out tomorrow.

Greetings from Kane County
We aren't to the ballpark yet, but while I was doing some work at the hotel, I figured I'd go ahead and link you to pictures of the ballpark.
Remember, if you go to this link, these are pictures and descriptions from the ballpark that I took last season. If anything changes or I need to upate it, I'll take more pictures when we get to the ballpark.
I'll have more posts a little bit later on today. Thankfully there are no elevators I have to take in Kane County so I shouldn't be getting stuck anywhere today.

Playoff Reminder
Mark Haley reminded the players of the playoff scenarios on the bus last night, and that reminded me that I should probably remind all of the fans how it works as well.
Two teams from each division qualify per half. Obviously, the same two teams can't qualify twice, so you take the first half qualifiers out of the mix for the second half.
With Great Lakes and Lake County qualifying for the playoffs in the first half from the Eastern Division, it doesn't matter where they finish in the second half. The top two of the remaining six teams will qualify in the second half.
So the fact that the Silver Hawks are seven games back of the Loons right now doesn't matter. They are only one game behind some of the other playoff eligible teams (Bowling Green, Fort Wayne, Lansing) and South Bend is still ahead of Dayton and West Michigan.
Hopefully this makes sense. As we get a little closer to the end of the half, I'll start posting daily playoff race updates like I did at the end of the first half.

Stuck in the Elevator
Well, I had an interesting experience earlier today. For the first time in my life, I got stuck in an elevator.
I arrived at Parkview Field, and took the service elevator up to the suite/press box level. I would normally take the stairs, but my experiences at Parkview Field have been that doors are always locked, and this elevator is usually the only way to get upstairs as early as I arrive.
Anyhow, I hit the "2" button and head on up. Everything was running smoothly at first, which is a good thing since I really had to use the restroom. Well, as it turns out, we get to the second floor and the door starts to open. After opening about 3 inches, it just stops, sits there for a minute, and then closes and the elevator does nothing.
After a moment of panic, I hit a different floor button to see if the elevator moves. Nope!
I can hear voices outside, so I bang on the door, but apparently they can't hear me. I ring the bell, but that doesn't attract the attention I was hoping for.
Finally, I ring the emergency call button, and talk to a very nice lady on the other end, telling her that my name is Owen and explaining to her that I was stuck in the elevator. She asks me if I'm stuck in elevator number two, to which I reply that I have no clue since I don't actually work here and don't know what the elevator number is. She says okay and hangs up.
A few minutes later, after starting to sweat and hoping that my bladder will hold out, I hear a voice on the other side of the door saying "Hold on, Owen. We'll get you out." I had never really doubted that I was stuck for good, but it's still reassuring to hear someone say that they'll get me out. It didn't take long at all for him to pry open the door, releasing me to the free world yet again.
All in all, I was actually only in the elevator for about 10 minutes, so it really wasn't that big of a deal. I'm just thrilled to find out that I'm the first person to ever get stuck in a Parkview Field elevator -- at least according to the security people that I spoke with later to unlock the door to the stairs so I didn't have to go back on the elevator.
Personally, I think the TinCaps should offer a ribbon or commemorative plaque of some sort. I'll settle for a free hot dog during the game tonight.

Slacking on the Blog
Yes, I know I've been slacking this weekend. Forgive me.
A few things I wanted to mention:
-Great last five games for South Bend, going 4-1. The Silver Hawks are trying for their fourth sweep of the season tonight and their first since May 8-9 when they took three from Dayton (doubleheader on the 8th).
-It appears as if Chris Owings and Mike Belfiore are close to getting healthy. I don't know a timetable for their return, but I do know that when they are back, somebody else has to be moved since the roster is at the maximum of 25.
-Game time tonight is at 7:05 PM Eastern Time, and then a commute back to South Bend. Tomorrow is an off day, which is much needed and well deserved for the players. The team continues the road trip Wednesday at Kane County.

July 9th Roster Move
RHP Kevin Munson added to the team after being drafted in the fourth round this June.
SS Chris Owings placed on the DL with plantar fasciitis retroactive to Tuesday, July 6th.
Full story on www.silverhawks.com.
This gets the Silver Hawks back up to 13 pitchers, and the only thing surprising about Owings on the DL is that it's taken this long for him to get there, after having not played the entire second half.

Christmas in July
Despite the temperatures soaring above 90 degrees, tonight is "Christmas in July" at the Cove! Fans can receive $2 off a bleacher ticket by bringing an unwrapped gift to the game that will be donated to Toys for Tots. Also, Santa will make a visit to spread holiday cheer. Below is a video of Silver Hawks players sharing what their favorite Christmas present they've received is.

OF Ender Inciarte rejoins the Silver Hawks from short-season A Yakima.
Full story can be read at www.silverhawks.com.
Inciarte brings a little bit more speed and defense to the Silver Hawks, and hopefully a stint with Yakima will help his average. He was hitting just .140 with South Bend earlier this season.

Interviews
As mentioned earlier, we'll have an interview with Keon Broxton in the pregame show today.
I also had a good chat with Bradin Hagens in the dugout today, and he feels horrible about throwing the ball out of the stadium last night while walking off the field after getting ejected. We've decided to do an interview tomorrow so he can talk about what he did, the frustration, etc.
I'm looking forward to talking to him about it on the air because it gives him a chance to give his side of the story. Again, that will be tomorrow evening at roughly 6:50 or so.

South Bend Silver Hawks Pitching and Catching Academy
Last Friday was the South Bend Silver Hawks Hitting Academy, which featured area children being taught the fundamentals of the game by Silver Hawk players and coaches. Below is some footage from the clinic, as well as information on how to sign up for the Pitching and Catching Academy on July 8th.
Not Quite 1,000 and a Few Other Notes
So upon further review, the last post wasn't number 1,000. It was actually 996 due to a quirk where sometimes blogger saves a "draft" of a post before you publish it, thus showing the same post twice. Either way, we're approaching the milestone and I stand by everything I said in the previous post.
A few other notes from the Silver Hawks today:
-RHP Brad Wilson will start and make his South Bend 2010 debut. He pitched in relief for the Silver Hawks in 2009 (only two appearances -- 4.1 scoreless innings).
-Reliever Brian Budrow has now thrown 9.2 consecutive scoreless innings since allowing a run on June 12th at Cedar Rapids.
-Keon Broxton is tied for the Minor League Baseball lead with 11 triples. He's one shy of tying the South Bend franchise record (12 by Victor Hall in 2001).

Post Number 1,000
This post is my 1,000th since starting this blog in March of 2009. I don't really have anything special to say other than my fingers must be tired from all the typing I've done the past year and a half.
When I started this blog, I envisioned it as a way to give some additional information about the team that you wouldn't find on the main silverhawks website. I also wanted parents of the players to stop by and get a glance at some photos from the stadiums while we were on the road, giving them an idea as to where their sons were playing.
While I maybe haven't taken as many photos as I thought I would, I never imagined that I would receive over 200 page views per day on this blog. I continue to be amazed at the unwavering support of the fans.
The best compliment I've ever received came from the parent of a player on last year's team. He wrote me an email saying "While I don't always agree with what you say, you tell it like it is and are very fair in your broadcasts." I hope that you all feel the same way and know that I truly appreciate all the kind words, emails, and support from the fans.
Oh, one more thing...don't worry about this team yet. It's still a better start in the second half than it was in the first half, and just because they struggle against the Loons, I still have confidence in this team's ability to be a playoff team. There is more talent on this team than maybe any other team in the league. They are growing and I'm seeing a lot of improvement even though it doesn't always seem like it.
Unfortunately, the Silver Hawks are snake bit against the Loons and the frustration sets in from time to time with the players, coaches, and even the broadcaster, but I look forward to being finished with the Loons for a while after tonight's game and seeing what the Silver Hawks can do against everyone else in the league.

The pregame interview is going to be a little bit different tonight. I did a longer interview with manager Mark Haley about former players in the majors, and also how he uses those lessons to teach the current squad. I'll play the first half of it during the pregame show before game one. Then I'll go back and play the full interview between games of the doubleheader. So if you listen to the whole thing, you'll hear the first half of the interview twice.

• The South Bend bullpen has allowed just one earned run in 14.2 innings over the last four games.
• First baseman Ramon Castillo has hits in each of his first 11 games for South Bend, tying Matt Davidson for the longest hitting streak this season.
• Chris Owings has not yet played in the second half due to plantar fasciitis.
• Keon Broxton recorded his 10th triple yesterday, tying for the league lead and he is now just two shy of the franchise record.

Hawks Back to Full Strength
RHP Brad Wilson was added to the roster today. He's expected to be the starting pitcher tomorrow.
This puts South Bend back to 25 active players (and three on the disabled list).
Full story can be read on www.silverhawks.com.
One more note: Catcher Ryan Babineau is back with the team after spending the last few months rehabbing in Arizona. He is still on the disabled list, and I don't know the timetable for a return. However, it's nice having him back because he's a great leader in the clubhouse and his veteran presence might help this young team.

Featured Silver Hawk - David Narodowski
This week's Featured Silver Hawk is utility player David Narodowski. Narodowski, a native of Vancouver, Canada, talks about his decision to play baseball instead of hockey as well as what it was like having the 2010 Winter Olympics in his home town. The article can be read by clicking this link.
First Place!!!!!
Good morning...and what a good morning it is. The South Bend Silver Hawks are tied for first place with the Great Lakes Loons in the Eastern Division (and since the Loons have already wrapped up a playoff spot, that means the Silver Hawks are alone in first ahead of all the other teams still in the hunt).
Now, let's not get ahead of ourselves. There are still 64 games to be played in the second half. But I'd much rather be in first place after six games than in last place.
A quick update from the parent club: The Diamondbacks fired manager AJ Hinch and GM Josh Byrnes last night. Kirk Gibson will take over as the interim manager and Jerry Dipoto will serve as the interim GM.
As of now, this doesn't really impact the Silver Hawks. However, once a permanent GM is selected, then that could have a fallout effect that reaches down all the way to the lower levels of the minors. We'll wait and see what happens in that regard.
In the meantime, enjoy first place!

For those of you who weren't able to catch last night's broadcast, the pre-game ceremony was the retirement of manager Mark Haley's number 51. It's an honor that is greatly deserved and major congratulations go out to Mark. Below is some video from the ceremony.
