Explanation on Roster Moves
My last two blog posts have received comments along these lines: "No offense to Ramon Ramirez, but he was only batting .211. Why was he moved up?"
This is a good question, and one that would be better answered by the Diamondbacks, since they are the ones that made the move. However, I can tell you that promotions aren't always about who has the best numbers.
Looking at the Silver Hawks roster, we see 25 players. So why wasn't the guy with the best stats promoted? Let's start trimming off guys:
First off, Visalia needed a position player, so that eliminates the 13 pitchers, and leaves us with 12 players that could be promoted.
Secondly, they needed an infielder, so that trims off six more (two catchers and four outfielders), leaving us with six players that could be promoted.
Thirdly, they needed a corner infielder, so that trims off Navarro, Elmore, and Estevez, leaving us with:
1) Ramon Ramirez
2) Justin Parker
3) Nelson Gomez
Of those three, Parker has the best numbers, but he is just coming back from an injury and has played in just two games in the last three weeks. Are you really going to promote a guy who has been hurt, and force him to play against tougher competition as he's trying to get better?
So now between Gomez and Ramirez, while Gomez has slightly better numbers, Ramirez is older, has been in the system longer, and is better suited for a move to the next level. Gomez is just starting to figure out his hitting here in the Midwest League, and a move right now could mess him up.
Ramirez is a veteran player who can move up, fill the role needed (even if it's as a backup), and not miss a beat. Again, no offense meant here to Ramon Ramirez, but a promotion is very rarely given to the best player on the team. Age has a lot to do with it. Experience has a lot to do with it. And the biggest key of all is who can fill the open role at the next level.
And another important thing to remember is that you wouldn't promote a left-handed specialist reliever to fill a starting role at the next level, right? So you also wouldnt' promote a starting third baseman to fill a backup role. You want to keep guys in their same roles all the way through the system for the most part.

Pollock Joins Silver Hawks

With the addition of Krauss and Pollock recently, the Silver Hawks lineup has gotten stronger. I think a few new bats makes every part of the lineup stronger, because it allows players to move into roles they are more comfortable.
For example, Alberto Diaz was batting cleanup for South Bend throughout June. While he is a power hitter, he is better suited for 6th or 7th in the lineup at this time until he develops further. And when you talk about a 7th hitter with the power numbers that Diaz has, that immediately makes the bottom third of the lineup better.

While losing Ramirez might not seem like a huge deal, I think it hurts in terms of leadership. He was a player that the younger guys looked up to, particularly the younger Latin American players. He was a good "clubhouse" guy, and had a knack for coming up with some big hits this season (remember the walk-off hit in the bottom of the 15th against Beloit).

Woo Hoo
An opponent other than Fort Wayne tomorrow!
I know that it might be out of the frying pan and into the fire with West Michigan coming to town, but at this point, it's nice to play someone other than the TinCaps.
I hope everyone regrouped during the off day. I certainly did, although I managed to get myself nice and sunburnt on the golf course today.
Back at it tomorrow. 7:30 PM First Pitch. 7:10 Pregame Show on 1620 ESPN Radio and www.silverhawks.com.

Blogging from the Bus
For whatever reason, on this trip to Fort Wayne we have a luxury bus that has the following:
- Leather Seats
- Satellite TV
- Wi-Fi
Usually our buses have TVs and a DVD player, so the only thing you can watch is movies brought by the players. This gets interesting at times, and in my four years as a broadcaster, I've seen movies like BeerFest and Old School more times than I can count. Not to say that there is anything wrong with these movies, but actually having Satellite TV is a nice change. Unfortunately, there are no early MLB games today, so we're currently watching the Outdoor Channel. I realize I'm from Kentucky, but this isn't really my style.
The Wi-Fi is something we usually don't have, although I have to say I'm a big fan. I can get a lot done (like this blog and my media notes) if I had internet access at all times.
If you ever wondered what a bus trip is like, let me summarize it by looking around the bus and telling you what I see right now:
-TVs are on, only about 2 people really watching
-There are currently 32 people on the bus, including players, coaching staff, and the bus driver.
-I'd say about 12 of the 32 are currently sleeping...or at least they were until the bus driver just slammed on the brakes and just woke everyone up (not his fault, a bad driver in front of us made a stupid move).
-Half of the people on the bus have in earphones listening to music of some sort (myself included and my current selection is Billy Joel -- I have an appreciation for all types of music).
-I'm in the third row behind the driver, one seat back of strength coach Vaughn Robinson, and two back of Franciso Morales. Mark Haley has the first row on the right side. Normally Erik Sabel is directly behind him, but Sabel isn't on the bus on this trip for some reason. Brian Czachowski usually occupies the third seat on the right, but he's moved up to the second seat with Sabel being absent. The players fill in the rest of the seats. Most have a row to themselves, although a few have to double up.
-I think there was a card game going on about halfway back. No idea what they are playing. If it's not War, Crazy 8's, or Euchre, I'm not playing.
-That's about it. Trust me, it's not that exciting, particularly when you play 70 games on the road a season.

Welcome to the Second Half
And after a light 3-4 days, I will resume my normal production on this blog.
The big story right now is AJ Pollock, the first round pick from Notre Dame. By all accounts, he has signed with the Diamondbacks and is going to be assigned to South Bend (at least that's what all the local media keep telling me, even if I have not heard it myself).
So the question becomes when does he play?
For the record, this is not unusual for other people to know something about a player with me still in the dark. Even if I hear the rumors (as I have), I certainly can't release anything or publish anything until it becomes official. Partly because that's my job, and partly because things change all the time in baseball.

Roster Moves
RHP Keny Sosa reassigned to Missoula.
RHP Sean Morgan placed on the DL with right elbow tendonitis, retroactive to June 21st (he hasn't pitched since June 5th).
What This Means: Aside from the obvious, it means that the Silver Hawks have only 22 active players on their roster, plus three on the DL. I think Wade Miley comes off the DL soon, as in today or tomorrow. I'd like to think Justin Parker is not far behind.
Even still, that leaves one more open spot on the roster. Another pitcher? A fielder? A.J. Pollock?
Your guess is as good as mine.

Suspended Game
Here's the important info:
Friday's game was suspended. South Bend trails 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning. 1-0 count on Alfredo Marte, 0 out, bases empty.
The game will resume at that exact point tomorrow at 6:00 PM. Pregame coverage begins at 5:50 PM. It will be completed through 9 innings.
A second game will follow. It will be a 7-inning game.
Fans with a ticket for Friday -- you can redeem your tickets for any future Silver Hawks game at the Coveleski Stadium Box Office, including for Saturday's game if you would like.
Fans with a ticket for Saturday -- you are entitled to see both games now, so plan on coming an hour earlier than scheduled.
Saturday's game will have fireworks at the end of game two to make up for Friday's postponement.

My take: He hasn't played since June 6th, and I think everyone was starting to get the feeling he wasn't going to be back until the second half anyhow. This just confirms it.
Marc Krauss, the second rounder added to the team yesterday, is expected to arrive right around game time tonight. He likely won't play in game one, but should be ready to go for game two.

Good for Duffy. Bad for the Silver Hawks. He was a heck of a leadoff guy and led the team in a number of offensive categories (runs, hits, average, on-base percentage, stolen bases to name a few).
My Analysis: With no one taking his place right now, it leaves it open to a lot of speculation. Obviously South Bend is not going to play with only 24 total players and three outfielders the rest of the year. So who comes here? And perhaps more importantly, when?
I think the answer comes in the next week, or over the all-star break at the latest. As for who, I'd imagine it would be an outfielder drafted from a college last week. Typically, you won't send a high school player to A-ball just after being drafted.
Potential candidates:

Pitching Update
Sean Morgan has been bumped in favor of LHP Taylor Sinclair tonight. Morgan was apparently a little tight in a side session the other day, and so the decision was made to go with the lefty instead.
High-A All-Stars
At the high-A level, the California League puts together a league of all-stars to play a game against the Carolina League (another high-A league). So there are fewer all-stars per team, but still a unique concept.
I'd love to see the Midwest League All-Stars battle the South Atlantic League All-Stars every summer, but I think that is probably years away from ever happening.
Anyhow, the purpose of this post is to tell you of two former Silver Hawks that are on the California League roster: Josh Collmenter and Pat McAnaney.

LAST GAME: The South Bend Silver Hawks have tied a season high six game losing streak with a 4-1 loss to Fort Wayne on Monday night. Ryan Clark hit two home runs for Fort Wayne, driving in three runs, with Sawyer Carroll adding a solo shot to center over the batter’s eye at Coveleski Stadium. Tonight's pitching matchup is a rematch of the May 17th game (Bass vs. Moorhouse). Fort Wayne won that game 5-1.
The Hawks are 1-7 on Sundays, and 0-2 on Mondays, but 6-2 on Tuesdays. What this means, I have no idea.
The Silver Hawks are averaging under four runs per game this season (3.93). They are allowing 4.43 runs per game this year.

The Silver Hawks scored their only run without a hit in the inning, on two hit batters and two walks in the third inning from Fort Wayne starter Erik Davis (WP, 5-1). Davis allowed just two hits in 6.0 innings, followed by two scoreless innings from Stiven Osuna (ND) and a 1-2-3 ninth from Brad Brach (ND). Wade Miley (LP, 2-5) allowed three of the five runs to Fort Wayne, giving up 10 hits in 7.0 innings. Bayron Zepeda (ND) gave up two big insurance runs to the TinCaps in the 8th, blowing the game open late.

The scoreboard. The eyes of the Dragons light up, and smoke/mist comes out of the nostrils of the Dragons when Dayton is trying to rally.

Finally, people always ask me what the best stadium in the league is. I can't answer that question without some explanation. I think the Dow Diamond in Midland, Michigan is probably the nicest stadium we visit. But when you put 8,000+ fans in Fifth Third Field in Dayton, it's hard to compete with that environment. Maybe after we visit every park I'll rank the opponent stadiums from 1 to 13.

The view from the right field lawn section towards the playing field. Notice there is water spraying up above the roof on the third base side -- that's a huge fountain along the riverfront in Dayton and it attracts a lot of kids on hot days.

Decently wide concourses, although not the widest in the league. When you fit 8,000 fans in this park, the concourses can get crowded if the weather is bad. On the upper left, notice the TV screens. They will rotate ads, trivia, photos, etc. during the game.

The view from the concourse behind the plate. It's unique in that Fifth Third Field actually has an upper deck with seats (not just suites like most of the stadiums in the league), so you can see the overhang of the second deck from this picture. More on that later.
In the lobby of the suite entrance, they have photos of all the former Dragons who have gone on to play in the majors. There are more photos on the other side of the elevator, so not everyone may be shown in this pictures. Notable former Dragons include Joey Votto, Jay Bruce, Adam Dunn, and Austin Kearns.
In 2007, Sports Illustrated named the Dayton Dragons as a Top 10 Hottest Ticket in Sports. Dayton has sold out every game in franchise history, which is over 800 now.
In the upper deck hallways, the Dragons hang the jerseys of any former player that was rated as a top 10 prospect according to Baseball America. Here is Austin Kearns' jersey from his time in Dayton in 2000.
The back wall of the press box is covered with specially designed Dragons wallpaper. A nice touch. That's Adam Dunn on the left.

May Players of the Month
South Bend, IN – The Arizona Diamondbacks have selected the organizational Players of the Month for May, with LHP Taylor Sinclair chosen as South Bend's Pitcher of the Month and OF Brendan Duffy selected as the Hitter of the Month for the Silver Hawks.
Double-A Mobile's Daniel Stange won the overall organizational award for Pitcher of the Month, with Mobile's Cyle Hankerd taking the overall Player of the Month award.
Sinclair spent the month of May splitting time between the bullpen and the rotation, yet excelled in both roles. In six total games (three as a starter), Sinclair was 2-0 in May with a 2.05 ERA. The left-hander threw 26.1 innings, allowing just 20 hits with 26 strikeouts and only eight walks. He is now in the bullpen, and is expected to pitch in tonight’s game against the Dayton Dragons.
Duffy has been at the top of the lineup all season and continues to get on base at a blistering pace. The outfielder hit .323 for the month, including 31 hits, while also walking 17 times and being hit by a pitch twice. That adds up to a .435 on-base percentage for the month of May.
Duffy currently ranks seventh in the Midwest League with a .327 batting average and is fifth with a .425 on-base percentage.
The Silver Hawks are currently on the road in Dayton, Ohio, where they will play game three of the four game series tonight with a 7:00 PM Eastern Time first pitch. RHP Ryan Cook (5-1, 2.85 ERA) will be starting for the Silver Hawks in his first game since coming off the disabled list.
The Silver Hawks next home game is Monday, June 8th against the Fort Wayne TinCaps. Game time is at 7:00 PM Eastern Time with pregame coverage beginning at 6:40 on 1620 ESPN Radio. Sinclair spent the month of May splitting time between the bullpen and the rotation, yet excelled in both roles. In six total games (three as a starter), Sinclair was 2-0 in May with a 2.05 ERA. The left-hander threw 26.1 innings, allowing just 20 hits with 26 strikeouts and only eight walks. He is now in the bullpen, and is expected to pitch in tonight’s game against the Dayton Dragons.
Duffy has been at the top of the lineup all season and continues to get on base at a blistering pace. The outfielder hit .323 for the month, including 31 hits, while also walking 17 times and being hit by a pitch twice. That adds up to a .435 on-base percentage for the month of May.
Duffy currently ranks seventh in the Midwest League with a .327 batting average and is fifth with a .425 on-base percentage.
The Silver Hawks are currently on the road in Dayton, Ohio, where they will play game three of the four game series tonight with a 7:00 PM Eastern Time first pitch. RHP Ryan Cook (5-1, 2.85 ERA) will be starting for the Silver Hawks in his first game since coming off the disabled list.

Greetings from Dayton...
...where my former co-workers are already playing tricks on me. I show up to the hotel today only to be told that they have given away my room. I immediately told our trainer that someone was playing a joke on me, but after calling my old friend JW who works for the Dragons, he was very convincing in explaining that they thought I was staying at home. They finally came clean and handed me my room key.
If any Dragons front office staff members read this blog, this is just a friendly reminder that paybacks are hell. Or maybe the Silver Hawks will just take care of business on the field and I'll still get the last laugh.

Off Day Thoughts
Well it's after midnight on Sunday (technically now Monday morning), so it's offiically the off day. For those of you that visit the blog every day, you may have noticed Sunday seemed to be an off day for me as well with no posts. In reality, the Principal Financial Group Family Fun Fest and some pregame interviews took up most of my time before the game, during the game I was too busy broadcasting, and after the game I spent over four hours in my car so I could spend the off day with family and friends.
Sometime during the day Monday, I'll post an update on the D'Backs system. Then Tuesday I'll have some stuff from the notes and the lineups. Wednesday or Thursday I'll have photos from Dayton as well.
This is going to be a fun trip for me because I spent seven years of my life in Dayton, Ohio (four at the University of Dayton, and another three as the color commentator for the Dayton Dragons). I have a lot of people to see and a lot of great memories from my time here.
It's also a very important trip for the team. Dayton is a team that has struggled most of the season, yet managed to split with South Bend in late April. Combine that with the fact that the Silver Hawks are six games out of a playoff spot with 20 to play, and you can understand why taking 3 out of 4 in this series becomes very important for playoff positioning before heading into four games with the Fort Wayne TinCaps beginning on Saturday.
