Well I'm back in the office today, even though I'm still not feeling 100% better. It's too close to the season to miss two days of work, so I sucked it up and came in today. Hopefully I don't spread too many germs around and get everyone else sick.
I am glad I came in today though, because waiting for me was my copy of the 2011 Baseball America Prospect Handbook. This book is the bible to the Minor Leagues, as it has a ranking of the top 30 prospects in each team's farm system plus a listing of who has the best tools and a full evaluation of the previous year's draft class. I will read this book countless times over the next 6 months to gather information on the Silver Hawks and their opponents.
Below is how Baseball America ranks the top 30 prospects in the Diamondbacks system, with a note on when they played here or if they might play here this year in parentheses. If no note is behind the players name, it means they did not play here and won't play here because they are already higher up in the system.

Both Chris Owings and Bobby Borchering appear in that as well as they discuss the top 100 prospects list (Owings received votes, Borchering did not but is addressed in a later question).

Some Love (Sort of) for Chris Owings
In the latest "Ask BA" column on Baseball America's website, the question is asked about the best offensive shortstop prospects. In a roundabout way, Baseball America says that Chris Owings is a good offensive player, but won't have a great impact in the majors.
In fact, here are the exact words:
That leaves Jurickson Profar (Rangers), Hak-Ju Lee (Rays) and Chris Owings (Diamondbacks) as the best bets after Machado to be shortstops with solid bats. That said, I don't foresee Profar, Lee or Owings making a big offensive impact.

My take: I have a hard time saying that someone who is 19 and was the leading hitter on a single-A team until he got hurt won't have a big offensive impact. If they are saying will he hit .330 every year with 40 homers, then the answer is probably no. But you can have a big offensive impact without blasting a ton of home runs. Like always, we'll just wait and see. Here's hoping "C-O" proves them wrong.

Former Silver Hawks = Future Stars
I posted this over at the main page (http://www.silverhawks.com/), but I figured I should link to it here as well. Baseball America released their rankings of the top 10 prospects in the Diamondbacks system yesterday, and it is chock full of Silver Hawks alums.
Nine of the top 10 played in South Bend, with a few more added in the "Best Tools" area.

Did You Know...
...that the Diamondbacks have two of the top seven picks in next June's draft? I was browsing the Baseball America website, and saw the list of who would be picking where next year.
It looks like the Silver Hawks should continue to see a lot of top talent in the years to come.

Back At It
I hope everyone had a nice holiday weekend and got a chance to spend time with family and friends.
To say that I had a great Thanksgiving would be an understatement. I proposed on Wednesday night to an amazing woman, and thankfully, she said yes. I'm a very lucky man and couldn't be happier.
In other baseball-related news since I last posted:
-The Diamondbacks acquired Zach Duke from the Pirates for a player to be named later. The PTBNL will be announced after the Rule 5 Draft takes place on December 9th because rosters are currently frozen. This doesn't necessarily mean that the player is eligible for Rule 5 selection, and according to the link above, indicates that he is a low-level player. I have no inside knowledge at all, but I'm guessing that when we find out who it is, it's going to be someone who played in South Bend within the last year or two.
-Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic has more analysis on Duke and the deal on his blog, which you can read here.
-I saw this a few weeks ago, and am just now posting it. Here's a chart of the PDC status for every MLB club and their affiliates from the Baseball America website. It'll let you know when you might see affiliation changes around the MiLB landscape.

MWL Top 20 Prospects
Baseball America has released the list of top 20 prospects in the Midwest League. It's not a surprise that Mike Trout of Cedar Rapids headlines the list.
Who else made it? Check it out here.
Not surprisingly, there are three Silver Hawks on the list. Somewhat surprisingly, Bobby Borchering isn't one of them.

Top Prospects by League
Baseball America started their annual ranking of the top 20 prospects in each league last week. The best place to follow along is at this link.
The Midwest League will be published on Friday, so I will make sure I update you on that when it's available.
While you're waiting though, it's worth it to go and browse through some of the other leagues to familiarize yourself with some names you might see in the MWL in 2011.

Baseball America Chat
This time of year, one of my main sources for blog posts is Baseball America's website. Every so often they do a "Prospects Chat", and while I certainly won't copy and paste the whole thing here, you can read about all the prospects this week at this link.
However, from this week, here's the questions that stood out as they related to the Silver Hawks (or former Silver Hawks) and what Jim Callis of BA had to say about them:
Mark (Reseda, Ca.): Where do you put Skaggs on your list. After his trade he had a 1.69 era , a 5-1 k/BB , his fastball sat at 93-95 and his change was killer. If you take the 2009 class of high school pitchers he is in the top 5 in every stat.
Jim Callis: Skaggs wasn't in the same class as those 2009 elite high school pitchers I mentioned, but he performed as well as any of them this year. He belongs in that discussion now.
Victor (San Diego): Jarrod Parker's consistently throwing 93 and touching 97, also adding a 2-seamer to his arsenal. Is he still a top 50 prospect for you?

Baseball America Prospects Chat Weighs In
I noticed this in the latest edition of Baseball America's Prospect Chat:
Kevin (Phoenix): Thoughts on which one of Bochering or Davidson sticks at the hot corner? Body wise, it appears that Davidson is more athletic. Which bat do you prefer?
Ben Badler: They're both going to have to put in a lot of work to stick at the position, and sitting on the bench while their team is in the field half the time really isn't an ideal situation. It sounds like Davidson might have a small edge there, though. Not a flashy defender, but he has the arm for the position, he can make the routine plays and he shows some aptitude for charging the slow roller.

First Round Pick
I'm blogging up a storm today (hotel rooms can be boring at times).
I noticed this in the latest Prospects Chat with Jim Callis of Baseball America:
Raoul (Tucson, AZ): Jim, you didn't include Barret Loux in your list of first round picks that might not sign. Will the Diamondbacks walk away from the guy with a bum shoulder and take the 7th pick next year or will they sign him to a reduced price?
Jim Callis: I should have mentioned the possibility of Loux. Could go either way on that one. The Diamondbacks didn't want to go over slot, which is why they took Loux, so they may be more inclined to sign him at a discount than have to haggle with an unprotected pick next year.
Just felt that it was relevant event to be blog-worthy.

Friday Fun
It's been a good week here at Coveleski Stadium as we continue to prepare for the 2010 season. Expect some information next week on the homepage of http://www.silverhawks.com/ about the promotional schedule for the season. Also next week, we'll check in with Ryan Babineau on his recovery from hip surgery in the latest installment of "Catching Up With".
Believe it or not, we are only 76 days away from Opening Day 2010 as I write this blog post.
