More Owings and Borchering
After posting the last post moments ago, I went to Baseball America's website and read the latest Ask BA article. Both Chris Owings and Bobby Borchering appear in that as well as they discuss the top 100 prospects list (Owings received votes, Borchering did not but is addressed in a later question).

New Page Design
I'd once again like to thank Andrew Bowen for his excellent work in making my blog design a thing of beauty. If you are wondering, the pictures are of Bobby Borchering (on the left as you look at it) and Matt Davidson (on the right).
Andrew is one of our group sales representatives, but clearly he has an eye for graphic design. He also has red hair, like me, so he's definitely a good person to have around the office. Sadly, Andrew's baseball talents aren't anywhere near his design talents, so this is probably the first and last time his name will ever appear in the same post as Bobby Borchering and Matt Davidson.

Local Pitcher Re-Signs with Diamondbacks and More Prospect Rankings
Logansport High and Notre Dame alumnus Aaron Heilman has re-signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks. It's only a one year deal, but it allows him the opportunity to compete for a starting job with the parent club.
In other news, Minor League Baseball is doing a series of the top 10 prospects at each position.
Bobby Borchering appears on the third basemen rankings, while Chris Owings makes the cut for shortstops. This is different from the Baseball America rankings that I posted yesterday. If you go to either of the links above though, you can see the full rankings per position (and other positions through a sidebar).

Despite not getting the GM job, Jerry Dipoto has decided to stay with Arizona, which most people say is a huge benefit to the Diamondbacks. Look for Dipoto to have a shot at a GM job in the near future.

More on Borchering
In the post below this one, I commented that I was somewhat surprised Bobby Borchering wasn't in the top 20 prospects for the Midwest League. One comment underneath questioned my opinion, and even though I replied there, I figured it was worth spending a few minutes discussing why I think Bobby Borchering is a strong prospect.
Let's break it down quickly by some categories:
Power - He's got plenty of it from both sides of the plate...no real need to debate this any more.
Average - Started slow, but hit .286 in the second half to finish at .270 overall for the season. Is that outstanding? No. It is pretty good for a 19-year-old who was drafted out of high school and is playing his first full season of baseball? Yes. We get so caught up in guys hitting .300 that we forget what a huge adjustment it is to go from a high school season to professional baseball. Let's also not forget that Justin Upton hit .263 when he was in South Bend and then hit .319 in Visalia/Mobile the next year.
Speed - Okay, so Bobby is not going to win any speed contests, nor is he going to steal bases. Who cares? There are plenty of guys who don't run that well but can still hit the ball a ton. Would you rather have a guy hit 30 homers or steal 30 bases? I'll take the homers.
Defense - I hate arguing about defense because it's difficult to do. I think Bobby can stick at third base, and I think the only way he gets better is by playing there every day instead of splitting time with Matt Davidson at the hot corner. How this works in the future if they are on the same team is left up to someone a lot smarter than me. He's not the best defensive third baseman I've ever seen, but he can play the position. I want to scream every time a scout or talent evaluator writes that a guy can't stick at one position. Are we seriously deciding at the age of 19 that he can't play third base? If you trusted all the "experts", then there would never be anyone who makes it to the majors as an infielder because no one is "good enough" to stay there forever. And if they decide they have a better third base option, then teach him how to play first. It's not that big of a deal.
X Factor - I don't know what an X factor is. The commenter in the post below said that Bobby lacked the X factor. Here's what I know...Bobby grew more both on and off the field than any other player on the Silver Hawks this year. He went from putting all the pressure in the world on himself to finally relaxing and enjoying the game -- and when that happened, his stats got better. Again, he's 19. Let's give him a few years to develop before we start saying he lacks the "X Factor", whatever that might be.
Summary: I know this may sound like I'm heaping praise on Bobby Borchering, and there's some truth to that. He is a good player, but still has a lot of work to do in order to reach his full potential. But in the five years that I've been in the Midwest League, he's among the most naturally talented players I've seen. I think he just scratched the surface of his abilities this year and I expect him to continue to get better as the years go by.
Remember, Baseball America wasn't ranking the best players in the league this year. If they were, then no, Borchering is not in the top 20. What they are ranking is the top 20 prospects -- meaning who they think will have the best futures. I've been wrong before, but I think Borchering will ultimately turn out to be one of the 20 best "alumni" from the 2010 Midwest League season.

MWL Top 20 Prospects
Baseball America has released the list of top 20 prospects in the Midwest League. It's not a surprise that Mike Trout of Cedar Rapids headlines the list.

Not surprisingly, there are three Silver Hawks on the list. Somewhat surprisingly, Bobby Borchering isn't one of them.

LAST GAME: Andrew Wolcott (WP, 2-3) pitched seven innings allowing just one run and Ender Inciarte drove in three to lead the South Bend Silver Hawks to a 6-4 victory over Bowling Green on Monday night. Bobby Borchering tacked on a solo homer – his 12th of the season – to guarantee the Hawks at least a split of the series. Brian Budrow (SV, 4) got the final two outs to earn the save. Tomas Francisco had two RBIs to lead the Hot Rods while the loss was pinned on Bowling Green starter Kyle Lobstein (LP, 8-7).
PLAYOFF RACE:
• With 14 games remaining, the Hawks are currently 4.5 games behind West Michigan for the final playoff spot.
INDIVIDUAL NOTES:
• Keon Broxton continues to lead all of baseball with 19 triples. He has tied the MWL record for most triples in a season (established in 1954 by John Wyre of the Clinton Pirates).
• Ender Inciarte has hit in 10 straight games, tying his career long.

Baseball America Prospects Chat Weighs In
I noticed this in the latest edition of Baseball America's Prospect Chat:
Kevin (Phoenix): Thoughts on which one of Bochering or Davidson sticks at the hot corner? Body wise, it appears that Davidson is more athletic. Which bat do you prefer?
Ben Badler: They're both going to have to put in a lot of work to stick at the position, and sitting on the bench while their team is in the field half the time really isn't an ideal situation. It sounds like Davidson might have a small edge there, though. Not a flashy defender, but he has the arm for the position, he can make the routine plays and he shows some aptitude for charging the slow roller.

From the Notes - Offense Edition
Here are some tidbits from today's media notes, sticking strictly with the offense today:
• Keon Broxton tripled again Wednesday and now has a franchise record 14 on the season (previous record was 12 by Victor Hall in 2001). He leads all of MiLB with the 14 triples.
• Matt Davidson ranks 1st in the league with 61 RBIs and is on an 11 game hitting streak (15 RBIs in the 11 games).
• Bobby Borchering has hit in nine straight games – his longest hitting streak of the season.
• Ramon Castillo has hits in 20 of his first 21 games with South Bend, including four homers and 17 RBIs.

Back To It...
After 4 days off, I'm ready to get this second half started.
The last poll question was ridiculous with some vote flooding, but according to the "fan vote", Matt Davidson edges out Bobby Borchering for first half MVP. Again, there was nothing official about this poll, and unfortunately it turned into a joke instead of a legitimate "who do you think has been the most valuable player" fan vote.
Anyhow, a new poll is up on the right.
