Yazy Arbelo has been suspended three games for his role in Tuesday's brawl with Lake County. He will begin serving that suspension today and will miss through Saturday's game at Great Lakes.
The suspension will keep Arbelo from setting the franchise record for most games played in a season.

Roster Move - Sort Of
LHP Patrick Schuster has been placed on the suspended list. This is for throwing at Chris Jacobs during that incident on July 7th. This really isn't a big deal because it's a three game suspension (Friday-Sunday) and he's not scheduled to pitch again until Monday night in relief of Tyler Green.

Marte Suspended 50 Games
I try to keep this blog full of mostly positive stories about former players, but I also intend for it to be a great source about Silver Hawks from the past, present, and future. Unfortunately, sometimes those stories will be negative, as we have seen with players getting traded, released, etc.
Today, we hit another type of negative story with the announcement that former Silver Hawks outfielder Alfredo Marte has been suspended 50 games for a positive drug test. According to the story, he tested positive for metabolites of Stanozolol, a performance-enhancing substance, in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.
Marte played for South Bend in 2009, hitting .251 with seven homers and 71 RBIs. He also led the team with 27 doubles. Last year, Marte was with Visalia, hitting .260 with nine homers and 61 RBIs.
The link above states that he is currently on the AAA Reno roster, but don't read too much into that. There is really no way that Marte was going to start the year at AAA, but everyone has to be on some roster during the offseason.
I first saw this story on esteemed Arizona Republic writer Nick Piecoro's blog, where he basically sums up Marte's career the best with the following line: Marte was once a fairly well-regarded prospect in the system, a guy with a quick swing, a strong arm and, some believed, a chance to become a dynamic player, but he hasn't lived up to expectations. He hit just .260 with a .688 OPS in High-A Visalia. This suspension, obviously, is a huge setback in his career.

Daniel Vasquez Suspended 50 Games
Whenever I see the headline "Four Minor Leaguers Suspended", I think about how idiotic it is that people are still getting busted for performance enhancing drugs in baseball. I then click on the link to see what names are listed this time.
Unfortunately today, the name was one that we all know. Daniel Vasquez, relief pitcher for the Silver Hawks in 2009, was suspended 50 games after testing positive for metabolites of Stanozolol, a performance-enhancing substance. Vasquez was 4-1 with a 4.57 ERA last season, pitching mostly in relief.
That's all the information I have right now. Sometimes positive tests can be a result of taking a supplement that you didn't know contained the banned ingredient. Then again, sometimes it is a result of doing something you aren't supposed to be doing. I won't judge Vasquez without the facts.
All I know is that he's suspended for the next 50 games, beginning on Opening Day 2010. For a guy who will be 24 when next season starts, has never pitched above low-A, and had an ERA over 4.50 last year, a positive test doesn't bode well for his future in baseball.
