Today's Blog

Today is the day for my fundraising walk with the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America, held here at the Cove. I will be assisting them with setup and then have the registration and walk beginning at 2 PM, so I won't be posting much. One final chance to donate by going here.

Casey will post the lineups a little bit later on.

Thank You!

When I contacted the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America this winter, I really had no idea what I wanted to do. All I knew is that I was in a position to finally help out and to raise awareness for this disease that I've dealt with for about 15 years now.

Then, we agreed to have the walk at Coveleski Stadium, and I knew I had a big challenge on my hands. I wanted to go above and beyond the recommended fundraising amount. The CCFA tells you to set your goal at $250. I ridiculously set mine at $1500, knowing that I've never asked friends and family for any money for Crohn's awareness. I figured if I got to $1,000, I'd be thrilled.

I currently sit at $1,350, and have 4 days left to hit my goal. I never would have reached this point without your support, and for that, I thank all of you. Some of the people whose names appear on the donation list and the amount they have given is simply amazing. In many cases, some of you have given $10, $20, or even $50 to someone who you have never met, but listen to on a nightly basis. It is your support that quite honestly means the most to me.

Thanks again, and if you still want to donate, there are a few days left. Just go here: http://online.ccfa.org/goto/owenserey

CCFA Walk

I've talked about this before, but in one month, I'll be walking to raise money for the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America.

I have Crohn's Disease (one of the side effects of which can be kidney stones -- the reason for me missing Friday's game). I contact the CCFA in the offseason, asking how I could help. They were looking for a place to have the walk, and I volunteered Coveleski Stadium. I'm excited to be involved, and I appreciate your support in any way possible.

There are two links in the upper right corner of this blog. The first one takes you to information about the walk on June 19th. The second one takes you directly to my personal page, where you can read my story (scroll down to the detailed blog at the bottom) or donate. I feel somewhat guilty about linking for donations on this blog, but at the same time, this cause means a lot to me and if anyone has been touched by this disease and feels compelled to give a few dollars, your support would be appreciated.

Crohn's Walk at the Cove

This blog is 99.9% about baseball and that's exactly what it's supposed to be about. However, although rare, there are a few things that are more important to me than baseball. This post is about one of those things and I appreciate you allowing me the opportunity to discuss it here.

When I was in junior high, I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease. It's an incurable inflammatory bowel disease, and at times, it can make life completely miserable. I ended up having surgery when I was 15 years old, and that bought me about 9 years of relatively "normal" living. Unfortunately, the disease came back with a vengeance a few years back, and I currently take 10 pills a day and undergo regular tests to try to keep it under control. Never knowing how your stomach is going to react to food makes sitting for 3+ hours every night for a broadcast a rather trying experience to say the least.

Later this summer, I will be walking as part of the 2010 Take Steps for Crohn's and Colitis at Coveleski Stadium. I contacted the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) last fall, and volunteered to have the walk at the Cove this summer on June 19th.

If this disease has affected you or someone close to you, please feel free to join me in the walk at the Cove. You can read my story here: http://online.ccfa.org/goto/owenserey (Read the detailed entry at the bottom of the page). From that page, you can also find links on the left side to join in the walk. You can email me at oserey@silverhawks.com for more information.

Also, you can donate to me under the red thermometer on the left side of the page where it says "Make a Gift". Your financial support is appreciated, but certainly don't feel obligated.

Thanks again for allowing me the opportunity to promote this event that means so much to me. Back to the baseball posts on Thursday late morning/afternoon.

Your Support Appreciated

I posted about this last month, but I'm going to keep posting about it occasionally because it is that important to me.

On June 19th, the South Bend Silver Hawks will be hosting a fundraising walk for the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America. For those of you that don't know, I have Crohn's Disease and it is very important to me to raise money for this cause. Even if you don't have the means to donate, just being aware of this issue is a big step.

For my story or to donate, click here.

To register to walk as well, go here (and send me a note at oserey@silverhawks.com if you decide to walk).

A Worthy Cause

I'm excited to announce that Coveleski Stadium will be hosting the "Take Steps for Crohn's and Colitis Walk" on June 19th before the Silver Hawks battle the Fort Wayne TinCaps.

For those of you that don't know (and that's probably most of you), I have Crohn's Disease. I was diagnosed in junior high, and have been living with it for about 15 years now. While there are certainly people that suffer more from this disease than I do, I still have my battles with it from time to time. There is currently no cure for Crohn's Disease, and it affects over 1.4 million people in the United States alone (1 out of every 200 people).

You will hear more about this walk on this blog over the next few months. I would apologize for posts that aren't about baseball, but sometimes there are just more important things in life -- and to me, raising money for Crohn's and Colitis research is more important.

A few links if you want more information:

-To find out more information about Crohn's Disease, go to http://www.ccfa.org/.

-To register to walk with me (and many others on that day), go here and then use the drop down menu at the top center of the page to find the walk in South Bend on June 19th.

-To pledge money in support of my walk, go to my personal page. You can read my personal history with Crohn's Disease at the bottom of the page. I am not expecting anyone that reads this blog to donate money. That's not what this blog is about. But if you would like to help out, your support would obviously be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for allowing me to use this blog as a forum to raise money for The Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America. Again, your support (financial or otherwise) is greatly appreciated.
