Digging Out from the Snow
For those of you not in this area, consider yourself blessed. South Bend and the surrounding communities got blasted with roughly two feet of snow over the weekend. Below are a couple of pictures of the stadium taken today (the construction crews took a day off from their work it appears. I can't blame them...they can barely find their equipment).

Friday Field Picture
We're getting there. My hope is that on Monday, the snow will be gone from all the dirt areas, as well as the grass behind home plate that doesn't see as much sun as the rest of the field.
Notice the area in the dirt around second base without any snow. Groundskeeper Joel Reinebold put charcoal in that area. Apparently this is a new technique that Joel wanted to try out. You ground up the charcoal, and spread it around an area on the field on sunny days. Charcoal, being black, will absord the heat of the sun faster, and thus melt the snow faster. Clearly, it works.
Interesting, huh? Apparently we now conduct science experiments at the ballpark. Next week, we'll create a tornado in a bottle.

What a Difference the Sun Makes
There's been this big, yellow thing in the sky the last few days. I've heard rumors that it's something called "the sun", but it had been so long since I had seen it, that I can't be 100% sure if that's what it is or not.
In all seriousness, the weather has been really nice so far this week, with the sun shining brightly and the temperatures creeping closer to 40 degrees. In addition to putting everyone in a better mood and getting people to think about the summer months and baseball, the sun serves one other very important purpose: it melts the snow!
Below are two pictures from this week. The first is Monday around lunchtime, after groundskeeper Joel Reinebold went out with the snowblower around the basepaths. The second is from today (Wednesday) around 3:30 PM. Wow, what a difference!

I'm Back
Sorry for the delay in posts.
In the last week, I've...
-Had my computer crash, losing all my programs (but saving all my documents -- thank God)
-I had already planned to go to Charlotte this past weekend for my twin nieces 4th birthday. So I drove from South Bend to northern Kentucky (my hometown) on Thursday night. Drove to Charlotte on Friday, dealing with traffic and snow. Then, it snowed in Charlotte! I was hoping to go south to escape the weather, and I ended up building a snowman in Charlotte on Saturday.
-I drove back to northern Kentucky Sunday night, but couldn't get back to South Bend on Monday because the snow in the Cincy area was so bad and heavy, I couldn't get my car out of my street.
-So I got up at the crack of dawn this morning, and drove back to South Bend. On my way back, I witnessed a jack-knifed truck, a car spin out roughly 250 feet in front of me, and all sorts of other cars spun off the road. Somehow, I survived.
-I've now made it back to South Bend, and am in the process of reinstalling all sorts of programs on my computer.

Happy New Year
I'd like to say I'm happy to be back in South Bend for the beginning of 2010, but when this is what greets you, then happy isn't exactly the right word.
Again, I know the locals will all make fun of me saying "Oh, this isn't that bad. You're soft." I get it. You have had worse. Heck, I've experienced worse in Kentucky from time to time. However, with a rear-wheel drive car, there is nothing about snow that I enjoy. Plus, this is my blog and I'll whine if I want to.
I'll have some more posts later, once I thaw out.

It's Snowing
It's officially snowing in South Bend for the first time this winter. I don't think it's going to accumulate much and I won't complain because I read online somewhere that by this point last year, northern Indiana had already seen 20 inches of snow.
I honestly don't mind snow in general, but I am not a real big fan of large quantities of snow. Given that South Bend's annual snowfall is listed at 81 inches, I could be in for a long winter.
Actually, the only reason that I sometimes complain about the snow is because I drive a car with rear-wheel drive that doesn't handle all that well in wet/icy conditions. Don't worry about me though, because I've taken all the necessary precautions to prepare my car for the winter time.
Anyhow, I still get blog visitors from all over the country and world, so for those of you in Florida, Texas, California, Alabama, and other warmer weather climates, just be grateful you're not in South Bend this weekend.
Also, be sure to scroll down a couple of posts and add your comments for who you think should be in the baseball Hall of Fame.

Monday Evening Update
Well, the good news is that the sun came out today, the tarp is off the field, and the snow has all melted.
The bad news is that there is more snow in the forecast for tonight. So, I guess we wait and see. If anything changes, you can find the information at www.silverhawks.com. I'll try to post updates here throughout the day as well, time permitting.
Also, the team arrived in town Sunday, and all the players were at the stadium today. I had a chance to talk with some of them today, and they all seem excited to be here and ready to go.
After some team meetings, they headed over to the indoor hitting facility at Notre Dame to get in some work. If you live locally, there should be a couple articles in the South Bend Tribune tomorrow about a few players (It seemed like Ryan Babineau and Justin Parker were the first targets of the media today). You should also be able to find the stories online at www.southbendtribune.com. Fans should go ahead and bookmark that page as well since they will be the primary source for articles about the team.
