More Releases
The latest round of Spring Training releases hit the Silver Hawks alumni hard, as all four once played here at the Cove.
Those that were released today are:
Bryan Byrne (2006)
Jeff Dietz (2008)
Errol Hollinger (2010)
TJ Hose (2009)
I don't know the first two guys, but saw them while I was with Dayton. Byrne had success at AA, but struggled in his lone AAA appearances in 2009 and will soon be 27. Dietz surprises me a bit, as his ERA was only 4.03 at AA last year. He's 25 though, so time was running out.
Hose excelled in South Bend, with a sub 2.00 ERA in 2009. He struggled last year in Visalia with a 6.41 ERA. Hollinger was a four year college player, so he was a bit older. He hit the ball well at the beginning of last season with South Bend, tailed off towards the end, and apparently has been passed on the depth chart by a few others so the D-backs cut him loose.
As always, we wish these guys the best of luck in either landing with a new team or moving on to something new.

More Releases
I promise to have some good news later today from Arizona (at least some pictures and some info on some former players), but I did want to post the latest round of released players which has a strong Silver Hawks feel to it unfortunately.
The following players were released this week by the Diamondbacks:

Former Hawks Pitcher Released
Well, it's starting to get back to that time of year again. The time where we find out who survives, and who has their career cut short.
Last night, the bad news came for 2009 Silver Hawks pitcher Brett Moorhouse, as he was released by the Diamondbacks. Moorhouse had a tough time in South Bend, losing 14 games despite a 4.52 ERA (while I realize the ERA isn't outstanding, there's no way that someone with that ERA should go 5-14. His ERA was under 4 until August. He was a bit of a tough luck loser that year.)
He pitched mostly in relief with Visalia last year, going 2-2 with a 4.94 ERA.
Good luck to Brett -- whether he lands with another team or moves on to something else.

Sometimes Life Isn't Fair
Yesterday, I received an email from the Diamondbacks with the latest roster moves for the minor leaguers. Unfortunately, this one told of the release of former Silver Hawks catcher Ryan Babineau.
To be honest, there are a lot of fans that may not recognize the name. Babineau came to South Bend in the spring of 2009, ready to start his first full season of Minor League Baseball. He had starred at UCLA, and then spent the last half of 2008 in Yakima. He was projected to be the #1 catcher, known more for his defense than his offense.
In 2009, he lasted just 10 games before he got hurt. The problem was in his hip, and surgery would eventually end his 2009 season almost before it began.
Ryan perservered though, worked hard, and made his was back in time for the 2010 season. This time, he made it 11 games before hurting his hip again, undergoing yet another surgery.
Throughout the two years, I got to know Ryan a little bit and saw how he responded to adversity. He was one of the good guys, who was a great team leader and would do whatever it took to play the game. In addition, his family was very supportive towards the Silver Hawks, often emailing me or checking in on my blog often.
Unfortunately, and understandably, the Diamondbacks couldn't wait any longer. They have younger catchers who have passed him on the depth chart, and the decision was made to let him go.
While I feel bad for Ryan and still wish him the best, I don't worry that he'll succeed in wherever he goes next.

The Worst Part of the Job
It's that time of year again, when players start to get released by their parent clubs. Unfortunately, the first wave of releases from the Diamondbacks have consumed four former Silver Hawks.
Alberto Diaz, Randy Rodriguez, Andrew Fie, and Justin Mace have all been let go by the Diamondbacks organization.
As I have long said, figuring out why a player was released typically isn't that hard. Most often it's a ratio of age versus level. If you're 23 or 24 and still in A-ball, your future isn't that bright. If you're 19 in double-A, you're going to stick around for a while.
That's not a shot at any of these players. They all have talent, but for one reason or another, just have not been able to develop or move up as quickly as they should. I've had the chance to get to know all of them, and I still feel bad for them that this has happened. However, from a baseball standpoint, I understand the decisions.

A Few More Cuts
Yesterday, Justin Parker was released by the Diamondbacks.
Today, Sean Morgan and Cody Evans got cut.
A few comments:
Parker is a solid ballplayer, and he was a sixth round pick in 2008. On the surface, it seems kind of early to release him. However, he's had trouble staying healthy as we saw throughout last season, and the concern is his body is breaking down on him after years of playing sports. He's also been passed up by a number of players at his position, with a lot more younger ones (Borchering, etc.) coming behind him.
Morgan is another guy who had trouble staying healthy. When he was healthy, the results were okay, but nothing that made you say "WOW!". I know both Morgan and Parker well from their time in South Bend, and I wish them both the best.
Evans pitched well in South Bend, but was still only 5-7 with a 3.02 ERA. He was always a guy that would lose a lot of games, even when pitching well it seems. His career record was 25-37, and at the age of 26, the Diamondbacks have apparently decided he's not a big part of their future.

A Few More Releases
Typically, when players get released, I put a little note along with it. I like to try to explain the decisions, etc. But sometimes, you just have to realize the time is up. It's not easy, and if you go back to Mark Haley's blog post last week, you'll remember that it's a hard decision for Arizona and the Minor League staff as well.

Catching Up From the Weekend
Well, now that my beloved Kentucky Wildcats are out of the NCAA Tournament, it's time to focus all my attention on the baseball season. (Props to my alma mater Dayton Flyers making the NIT Final Four, but come on, it's the NIT).
Let's catch up on a few important stories from the weekend:
-A.J. Pollock is out 3 months after having elbow surgery. He wasn't going to be coming back to South Bend anyhow, but with him being out, it may bump up someone slated for the Silver Hawks.
-Nick Piecoro also did a piece on Marc Krauss late last week. You can read it here.
-Mark Haley's latest blog entry discusses his family coming to visit and drug testing in Spring Training. How would you like to pee in a cup with somebody watching?
-Finally, Daniel Vasquez has been released by the Diamondbacks. Vasquez pitched for South Bend last year, going 4-1 with a 4.57 ERA. However, he tested positive for a performance enhancing drug in the offseason, and was going to be suspended 50 games to begin this year anyhow.

Clayton Conner Released
Just received an email from the Diamondbacks announcing that they released four players, including former Silver Hawks infielder Clayton Conner.
Conner had a couple of big games for the Silver Hawks at the end of last season, but ultimately hit just .220 in 24 games with South Bend. It was his third stint with the Silver Hawks, playing the end of '07 with the Hawks and the beginning of '08, before an injury shut him down for the rest of the year.
At 23 and most likely ticketed for a return to low-A ball, I'm guessing the Diamondbacks have decided that the time has passed for Conner. We certainly wish him well wherever he ends up.

That Time of Year Again
As players are getting ready to start spring training, there just isn't going to be enough room for everyone. As we progress through the next month and a half, I'll keep you updated with any news or notes I can from the desert, including possible players that look to be heading towards South Bend, as well as those that get released.
Tonight, we start with bad news for a former Silver Hawk. Manny Ferrer has been released by the Diamondbacks.
Manny had been on the restricted list since July. In 40 games with Visalia in 2009, Ferrer hit just .127. Ferrer also spent two seasons with South Bend, never batting higher than .246 in his four year minor league career.

Former Silver Hawks Pitcher Released
I recieved an email from the Arizona Diamondbacks yesterday saying that Tony Barnette has been released. However, this isn't necessarily as bad as it sounds. Barnette is being released so he can continue his playing career in Japan.
We are working on contacting Barnette in a "Catching Up With" feature. Hopefully, we'll have something from him soon.

Ugh...Releases
I hate this time of year, because every once in a while I get an email from the parent club (in this case, the Diamondbacks) announcing the release of minor league players.
The first wave of releases hit my email inbox roughly 10 minutes ago, and it always leaves you with a horrible feeling inside. I'll try to seperate my emotions from these posts and think of it from the baseball side, but it's hard when you become friends with these guys over the course of the season.
With that said, here is who was released today:
Brendan Duffy -- Probably the most surprising name on the list in my opinion. I thought Brendan was a tremendous ballplayer whose game (slap hits and speed) plays at every level. That being said, Duffy was a 41st round pick and was "old" for the level he was at this year since he is already 24, and I'm guessing the Diamondbacks decided that he wasn't in their future plans so they should make way for younger guys.
Nelson Gomez -- Nelson might have been the biggest disappointment on the Silver Hawks this season, if only because he led Missoula in home runs and RBIs in 2008. The power numbers were never quite there this season, and he had trouble keeping his starting job. An up and down season for a 23-year old first baseman that wasn't showing a lot of power is a bad combination. Arizona has apparently decided they have better options at the corners with Parker, Wheeler, Conner, and a few others coming up through the ranks.
Jordan Meaker -- Meaker is another player who had a great 2008 and struggled in 2009. After posting a 1.47 ERA with Yakima in 2008, Jordan came back with a 5.67 ERA this season. I thought Jordan showed great growth towards the end of the year, but it wasn't enough apparently. I know I said I'd keep emotion out of it, but I'll say this for Jordan: He was arguably the nicest guy on the team, and I have no doubt that if he doesn't latch on with another team, that he will be successful in whatever field he chooses to go into. He was just a tremendous person to talk to and be around.
Houston Summers -- Houston was the knuckleball reliever that joined the staff for a few games in the middle of the season. He was converted from a position player to a pitcher after a year in the system, and just never quite found the right role. He spent a lot of time bouncing between extended spring training, Missoula, and Yakima. Houston also has the achievement of winning the first ever MiLB.com Moniker Madness tournament.
In addition to those four that played with the Silver Hawks in 2009, the following players were also released from the Diamondbacks organization:

Ben Dollar
Astolfo Inciarte
Pedro Rodriguez
Clayton Suss
Greg Thomson (played with South Bend in 2006)
