Busy, Busy, Busy

Sorry that it's been almost two days since I last posted. Things have been quite hectic the last few days.

To fill you in, here's a bunch of links for you:

-The Arizona Diamondbacks continued to be major players at the Winter Meetings, resigning Mike Hampton yesterday and then drafting a player in the Rule 5 Draft this morning.

-Reaction on the Diamondbacks moves can be found here and here.

-I gave a speech on behalf of the Silver Hawks to a career day at West Side Middle School in Elkhart yesterday morning. If you want to book a Silver Hawks speaker for your school, group, or business, go here.

-I also joined Swoop yesterday at the University Park Mall. We were guests of Sunny 101.5 FM as part of their Giving Trees promotion. Please stop by their tables and vote for your favorite tree -- all proceeds to to charity.

-Finally, we are still waiting on the Diamondbacks to announce the field staff for their Minor League affiliates. I think it's a safe bet that Mark Haley is returning, but we don't know the rest of the staff as of yet. Obviously, as soon as we know something, the information will be on http://www.silverhawks.com/.

Speakers Bureau

Sorry for no posts earlier today...I was out giving a speech to Berrien Springs High School in Michigan. They are preparing for homecoming this weekend so I think it was a good break for the students from the usual grind of daily classes to have me talk about Minor League Baseball. My thanks to the Shamrocks for having me out to talk.

Don't forget that if you want me, Joe Kernan, Mark Haley, or another Silver Hawks staff member to talk to your group, we're more than willing to do so free of charge. You can find all the information online here.

You have one day left to vote for who you are rooting for in the MLB playoffs. The results will be posted soon with a new question going up tomorrow or Thursday.

Wednesday Morning Wrap-Up

-Last night I spoke to the Goshen Aktion Kiwanis Club, which is a group of developmentally disabled adults. They were very gracious and excited to have me there, served hot dogs and cracker jacks for dinner, and played baseball songs on the piano while they ate. It was a great time, and I thank them for inviting me to their meeting.

-The Diamondbacks beat my beloved Cincinnati Reds in a spring training game yesterday. Former Silver Hawks outfielder Justin Upton had a home run for the Diamondbacks, while former Dayton Dragons outfielder Jay Bruce homered for the Reds.

-It's rainy in South Bend today, which normally stinks, but it's warm enough outside that I'm not complaining.

-Mark Haley has a new blog entry over at the Tribune's website.

Catching Up from the Weekend

Let's catch up on a few things, shall we?

-Nick Piecoro has video of Dan Haren and others pitching in spring training. Granted, it's not the most exciting video in the world, but it still is nice to watch given that some parts of this area are going to see up to 8 inches of snow today.

-If going to Outback Steakhouse, may I recommend the pattern of food that I had last night. Start with the Aussie Cheese Fries, enjoy a house salad next, then enjoy your steak with a baked potato slathered in butter and bacon. I'm still full.

-Johnny Damon is now a Detroit Tiger, ending what should go down as the worst offseason ever for an agent and his client. To be honest, the Tigers still paid too much for him. He turned down two years/14 million from the Yankees, and ended up signing for one year/8 million. Now obviously, if you look at it per year, he did okay for himself. But they wanted a multi-year contract, and more money than they ended up getting.

-A Public Service Announcement for the guys: If you're wife/fiancee/girlfriend/significant other is begging you to take her out, the movie "Valentine's Day" is entertaining enough that you can save some dignity even though I'd still consider it a "chick flick". It has to be a far superior option for the guys than Dear John. You can thank me later.

-My buddy Will "The Thrill" Geoghegan has finished his top 50 prospects on the Cape over the last decade. You can catch up on them all here.

-Finally, I'll be giving a speech today in Mishawaka. If your group/school/business is interested in having a speaker from the Silver Hawks (GM Lynn Kachmarik, Mark Haley, or even your favorite radio broadcaster), you can find the information here.

Some Reminders

It's January, it's cold, and for many of you, baseball is the last thing on your mind. However, there are a few things you should keep in mind:

-As much as I put on this blog, your first stop for Silver Hawks news should always be www.silverhawks.com. The 2010 schedule with game times is up, season ticket information is up, and some store items are on sale for purchase online only.

-Some additional ways to follow the Silver Hawks: Facebook and Twitter

-Have a group? Teach a class? Need a speaker? Don't forget about the Silver Hawks Speakers Bureau. We'll come speak to your group for free.

Need a Speaker?

I don't usually use this blog for advertising purposes, because that's not what I want this to be about. I like to think of this blog as a forum for on the field news and updates about former players.

That being said, the Silver Hawks are only successful because of you -- the fans -- and I love talking to the fans. Thus, I started the Silver Hawks Speakers Bureau. I (or another member of the Silver Hawks staff) will come out and speak to your club/group/school for free.

If you have any interest in having a speaker from the Silver Hawks (now or during the season), click the link above or contact me at oserey@silverhawks.com.
