More on the Instructs

Nick Piecoro is flat out killing it on his blog lately. You want information on just about every Silver Hawks player that is in the desert right now? His blog is the place to go: http://www.azcentral.com/members/Blog/NickPiecoro/Page0

He has thoughts on Keon Broxton, David Nick, Chris Owings, Bobby Borchering, and Tyler Skaggs from the 2010 club, not to mention former Silver Hawks Jarrod Parker and Brandon Webb.

Featured Silver Hawk - Archive

Since the team has been on the road all week and I haven't had a chance to interview a player, there will not be a new "Featured Silver Hawk" today. However, the previous four stories are now all available to view on the "Featured Silver Hawk" page on the Silver Hawks website.

The archive page is located under the "Roster" tab and will be updated every week. As of now, it has links to the stories on David Nick, Keon Broxton, Charles Brewer, and Brian Budrow. Check back next week for an article on a new player.

Featured Silver Hawk

One of the items that I have Casey working on this summer is doing a "Featured Silver Hawk" each week, to be put up on the website every Friday.

The first person he did a story on is David Nick, and the article can be read by clicking the link or looking for the story headline in the "News" section on silverhawks.com.

From the Notes - May 1st

Happy Saturday! As you've probably noticed, the blog updates are less frequent on the weekend than they are during the week, largely because I try to work less hours on the weekend than I do during the week. Working 10 AM - 10 PM (or later) on Monday through Friday takes its toll on you, so I come in a little later on Saturdays. Anyhow, here are a few tidbits from today's notes:

HALEY’S CHASE FOR MILESTONE VICTORIES
• Mark Haley entered 2010 with 456 career victories (442 regular season, 14 postseason wins) and 375 wins for the Silver Hawks
• As of today, Mark needs 34 wins to reach 500 in his career, and 15 wins to reach 400 with South Bend
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
TEAM NOTES:
• The Silver Hawks have scored 14 first inning runs this season, the most for any one inning in 2010.
• South Bend has scored just 69 runs in 22 games, the 3rd fewest in the MWL - West Mich (66) and Bowing Green (62) have fewer.
• The Silver Hawks rank 4th in the league with 8 triples – Keon Broxton has 5 to lead the team.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
INDIVIDUAL NOTES:
• Eric Smith ranks 3rd in the league in ERA, 2nd in WHIP, and has a 21.0 consecutive scoreless inning streak.
• Matt Davidson had one hit yesterday and now ranks eighth in the league with a.354 batting average.
• Yonata Ortega has converted six straight save opportunities after blowing his first one.
• David Nick snapped an 0-for-13 skid with two doubles and a RBI in yesterday’s win vs. West Michigan.

From the Notes - April 12th

Occasionally, I'll post some interesting tidbits from my Media Notes. Here are today's interesting facts:

-South Bend has been held hitless for at least five consecutive innings in each of the first four games, including 7.1 innings Thursday, 6.2 innings on Friday, 5.1 innings on Saturday, and 5.1 innings on Sunday.

2010 Infield?

If the Diamondbacks transfer the Missoula infield to South Bend next season, it could be fantastic. Baseball America has rated the Pioneer League's top 20 prospects, and four Missoula Osprey made it, including the second baseman, third baseman, and shortstop. You have to be a subscriber to read the scouting reports on all the players, but this link will take you to the story and the top 20 rankings.

To save you a little time, here are the Diamondbacks prospects and where they were ranked in the league:

#3 - 3B Bobby Borchering: 1st round pick, 2009 (One spot ahead of A.J. Pollock)
#7 - SS Chris Owings: Supplemental 1st round pick, 2009 (41st overall)
#12 - LHP Mike Belfiore: Supplemental 1st round pick, 2009 (45th overall)
#19 - 2B David Nick: 4th round pick, 2009

The Northwest League (Yakima Bears) top 20 is announced today, so I'll post about that tomorrow morning. The Midwest League is set to be announced on Thursday, so I'll do a big post about that on Friday.
