Just received word that Wade Miley has been called up to the Arizona Diamondbacks. He pitched for South Bend in 2009 and becomes the 126th former South Bend White Sox/Silver Hawks player to make the majors.

Minor League Transactions - Updated
Just received an email from the Diamondbacks announcing the following Minor League transactions:
Outright (trade) to Durham (TB) from Reno (ARI): Matt Torra
Transferred from AAA Reno to AA Mobile: Tom Layne
Transferred from AA Mobile to AAA Reno: Wade Miley
Transferred from R Missoula to SA Yakima: Westley Moss
The first three are former Silver Hawks. I'm not sure who Torra was traded for with the Rays. I'm trying to find out. (UPDATE: Found out Torra was traded for cash considerations.)
Bad news for Layne in that he's going backwards. Good news for Miley, who pitched for South Bend in 2009.

Owen's Spring Training Report - Thursday Morning
Hello from the press box at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale, Arizona. I am here with 3 other staff members from the Silver Hawks for a couple of days to check out the new Diamondbacks complex and report on what I seet.
This morning, we were fortunate enough to get a tour of the new facilities (photos below) from Susan Webner, who is Arizona's Minor League Administration Manager. She basically handles all the details of player movement (travel, etc.) and keeps the affiliates and the various managers up to date on who is going where.
After that, we watched a couple of scrimmage games between the various Minor League teams. It seemed as if Reno was playing Mobile and Visalia was playing South Bend (and rookie clubs).
A few notes on former Silver Hawks:
-Ramon Castillo is catching now since there is a logjam at first base in the system. He also has a full head of flowing hair.
-Bradin Hagens is being moved to a starting role, and we could possibly see him back in South Bend this season if he doesn't make Visalia.
-I had a chance to talk briefly with Charles Brewer, who is slated for double-A Mobile (along with Wade Miley, who I saw pitch an inning). I also said hello to Tyler Skaggs, who is impressing a lot of people this spring.
-Matt Helm took a minute to make fun of how pasty white my legs are (I've been in South Bend for 2 years and I have red hair -- what does he expect?), but he also mentioned that he's likely going to be back with the Silver Hawks to play third base (his natural position).
-I also saw Rossmel Perez walking around with a big cast/wrap on his hand. It appeared to be a thumb injury as best I can tell.
I'll have a lot more later, but for now, enjoy some photos of the facilities.

Lunchtime Links
Some stuff for you to read today:

-Finally, some changes at the top with the Arizona Diamondbacks as Peter Woodfork and Tom Allison have been relieved of their duties. Despite not getting the GM job, Jerry Dipoto has decided to stay with Arizona, which most people say is a huge benefit to the Diamondbacks. Look for Dipoto to have a shot at a GM job in the near future.

Diamondbacks Top 10
Baseball America has released the Arizona Diamondbacks Top 10 Prospects today.

My unsolicited opinions:
-I'm not surprised Jarrod Parker is number one, nor should any of you. He's clearly the best pitcher in the system, even with recent surgery.
-Borchering is young, and likely a Silver Hawk in 2010. Baseball America always gives preferences to younger players over older ones, because their ceilings are always higher.
-I was surprised to see A.J. Pollock at #3. He had a fine year, just not an overwhelming one. However, I think you'll see Pollock dominate the Cal League in 2010, and then it's just a matter of making the proper adjustments to continue to see success on the way up.
-Allen was acquired via a trade, so we don't have a lot to go on with him.
-Schlereth comes in fifth, but that's irrelevant now since he just was traded (see previous post). I would imagine Baseball America would update this list before publishing their top 30 Prospect Handbook.
-Owings and Belfiore are the real deal from what I hear. And they should both be in South Bend on Opening Day 2010.
-Krauss is a guy I struggle with at #8. I'm not saying he doesn't deserve it, or that he's not good. He has enormous power and showed some ability to hit for average. However, he was limited due to ankle injuries, and I don't think we saw everything he could do. I'd like to see him play a full season at 100% before I judge his prospect rating.
-Ryan Wheeler should be higher than #9. In my book, he's top 5 in the system (and that's coming from only seeing him play about two weeks). His swing is so smooth that it's hard for me to imagine his average ever being below .300, and the power numbers will be there as well. He's the real deal.
-Collin Cowgill at #10 is fine. Like Krauss, he had an injury last season that limited him. Again, a full season should help us determine whether the top 10 ranking is justified.
Notable players that dropped out of last year's top 10:
#2 Gerardo Parra (no longer a prospect since he made it to the Majors)
#4 Mark Hallberg (hit .257 for Mobile -- should still be in top 30 I would imagine)

#7 Cesar Valdez (went 7-6 with a 4.78 ERA in Reno)

Playing By The Rules
I expressed my frustration on the air, and I know the fans at the Cove were frustrated too. I'm sure listening at home, you were hoping that Wade Miley would be able to pitch the final two innings tonight, in a bid for a perfect game (he was perfect through 5 when he was removed).
However, I've mentioned it a number of times on the air and on this blog, that the ultimate goal is not to win a championship or achieve individual accolades at this level. Ultimately, the Diamondbacks want to develop players that will help at the Major League level in a few years. Winning in South Bend becomes secondary to player development.
It has also been determined by the D'Backs that 120-130 innings per season will be the maximum at this level, and do that, they must limit certain guys at certain parts of the season. Unfortunately, that is what everyone has to live with...whether a perfect game is on the line or not.

In case you've missed it on the broadcast the last few nights:
-Jordan Meaker is starting tonight in place of Brett Moorhouse. Moorhouse will resume his spot in the rotation the next time it comes around against Cedar Rapids on Monday
-This is a move done to limit the number of innings Moorhouse throws. The Diamondbacks like to keep starting pitchers at this level between 120 and 130 innings on the season, and Moorhouse was going to surpass that at his current rate.
-In addition, Wade Miley will be limited as well for the same reason.
-Both Moorhouse and Miley will probably be held to just 5.0 innings per start for the rest of the season.
-I understand limiting innings, and I realize the Diamondbacks know what is best for their pitchers. Sometimes though as a fan it gets frustrating, because a guy could be pitching a great ballgame and gets pulled after five. This is where the low levels of the minors turns into more about development, than about winning. You hope to do both, but ultimately, the goal is to get these guys to the majors to win at that level, and winning at this level becomes secondary to the ultimate prize.

Number Changes
In case anyone cares:
Wade Miley will now wear #33. He wanted that number at the beginning of the season, but with Ramon Ramirez being the veteran player, he got first choice. Now with Ramirez promoted to Visalia, Miley has taken 33.
And with #15 becoming open, Jordan Meaker has decided that he'd prefer to be that number.
So to recap:
Miley now #33
Meaker now #15
Superstition runs wild in baseball.

Top 10 Prospects
I mentioned earlier this week that Gerardo Parra was listed as the #2 prospect in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization according to Baseball America.
