Graduation Day

Today was graduation day for the Latin players who have been taking English classes all season.  Many people don't realize that they take classes in the morning all summer long, well before the rest of the players arrive to the ballpark.  The dedication from these players is remarkable, not only towards baseball but in becoming engrained in the American culture that they are very much a part of.

Congratulations to the guys who have done an excellent job learning the English language and culture, and well done on their presentation today.

Those that were part of the ceremony today include:

Victor Capellan
Eury De La Rosa
Raywilly Gomez
Jhoan Pimentel
Ramon Castillo
Gerson Montilla
Ender Inciarte
Roberto Rodriguez

Today's Roster Move - June 30th

It's official, David Holmberg has been moved up to Visalia.  Here's the move:

LHP David Holmberg promoted to high-A Visalia.
RHP Victor Capellan joins team from high-A Visalia.

Analysis:  Holmberg was simply dominant, and this is a well-deserved promotion.  While it stinks for the Silver Hawks, it is certainly good for him and we all wish him the best.  I have a strong feeling we'll see him again on TV someday.  He was simply that good.

Capellan has struggled with the Rawhide this year, but had decent numbers with them last season and great stats with South Bend in 2009.  He is a reliever though, so the Silver Hawks will have to figure out who will fill Holmberg's spot in the rotation.

Today's Roster Move

RHP Victor Capellan rejoins the Silver Hawks from high-A Visalia.

Capellan was with South Bend earlier this year, pitching in two games (one run allowed in 4.0 innings). He was sent to extended spring training when Cook and Woodall came off of the DL. He then went to Visalia for five games, and is now being sent back to South Bend.

He becomes the 25th active player on the roster. Sean Morgan is on the DL. By all reports, Morgan is improving daily, but there is no timetable on his return as of yet.

For the first time in a while, South Bend will be playing with 25 active and healthy players.

Today's Roster Move

Activated from DL: Ryan Cook, Bryan Woodall

Reassigned to Extended Spring Training: Houston Summers, Victor Capellan

Now it's decision time. Which of the following players moves out of the rotation so that Cook goes in?

Miley
Moorhouse
Sinclair
Morgan
Rodriguez

I would think Miley and Moorhouse are safe in the rotation. Sinclair's pitched so well it would be hard to take him out (although he is the guy that moved in when Cook got hurt, so perhaps he's moved back to the pen). Morgan's pitched better as of late in the starting role after struggling in his first few outings. Rodriguez just joined the team a few weeks ago, and has only made three starts, so it's tough to get a read on him.

I think this will be an interesting decision, but a good one to have. It's always nice to have six qualified candidates for five spots in the rotation.

Hello from Peoria -- Roster Move

Got in shortly after midnight last night, and after a mix up with the team hotel, everyone ended up with a place to sleep (even if it was 3 guys to a room in some cases, spread out over two or three hotels). Life in the minors...gotta love it.

Below is the info on today's roster move. Lineups a bit later tonight. Pictures of the stadium coming tomorrow after the game most likely.

In conjunction with the Arizona Diamondbacks, the South Bend Silver Hawks have announced that right-handed reliever Bryan Woodall has been placed on the disabled list with a strained bicep. Taking Woodall’s spot on the roster will be right-handed reliever Victor Capellan.

Woodall is 1-3 with a 6.52 ERA in 11 relief appearances for South Bend in 2009. He last pitched Thursday against Burlington, allowing two runs on four hits in 1.0 inning. Woodall was selected in the 21st round of the 2008 draft out of Auburn University.

Capellan joins the Silver Hawks from extended spring training and is expected to be in uniform for Saturday’s game against Peoria. Signed as a non-drafted free agent on January 18, 2008, Capellan had 15 relief appearances for Missoula last season. He compiled a 0-1 record with a 6.18 ERA, allowing 36 hits over 27.2 innings with 22 strikeouts and 13 walks. Capellan is originally from Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic.
