Justin Parker was a late scratch. I think his shoulder is still bugging him to some extent.
Pregame interview guest tonight is Reynaldo Navarro.
Photos from Beloit - Part Three
That's the stadium on the left. That's a neighborhood on the right. This ballpark is situated right in the middle of a residential area.
The view from behind the seating area. The press box just sort of hangs there. I'm sure it's supported well, but I was much more comfortable before I realized that there wasn't anything underneath the press box.
The field.
The view from the dugout. I'm sitting up on the back of the bench when I took this. You can't tell from this photo, but those steps are probably the steepest steps in all of Minor League Baseball.
From the right field line, a photo of the outfield and the scoreboard.
Photos from Beloit - Part Two
The view from down in the right field corner. Notice that the plate area for the bullpen is out in the grass, rather than on the warning track. A bit odd. Also, there is a lot of foul ground, just like at the Cove.
A picnic area in right field. This area was occupied by a Little League team last night.
Another shot from down the right field line, giving you an idea of the seating bowl.
One row of seats directly behind home plate. I guess only the richest of the rich get to sit here.
The seating area behind home plate. Again, the yellow seats must be for the rich and famous. The blue seats are like bucket seats. The bleachers have backs behind home plate, but don't down the lines.
Photos From Beloit - Part One
Prince Fielder played here for a couple of seasons. He's good.
This sign apparently means nothing on the entrance to the press box. It's like a revolving door of people all night long.
This is the view from the entrance of the press box. Those are my chairs on the left side of the screen. As you can see, it's an "open" press box, meaning that there are no doors seperating the various rooms. That means everyone in the press box can hear my broadcast, and I can hear everything else that's going on. Not to sound like an unsocial jerk, but sometimes I enjoy the privacy of having my own booth.
This is the visiting radio area of the press box. I took this shot so you can see the full overhang out in front of the booth. If a high fly ball is hit, I can't see the ball. I just find the fielders that are moving around and try and figure out who is going to make the catch.
This is my normal view from the press box, as I'm sitting in my seat. It's not horrible, but again, note the overhang at the top of the picture that restricts the view.

We were late arriving into town, so we had a much later bus to the ballpark to allow the players to sleep in. That also means that I had less time to set everything up tonight on the first game of a series, so no pregame interview. We'll fill that segment with the standings and an early scoreboard update, and then I should have interviews for the rest of the road trip hopefully. Thanks for understanding!
Former Silver Hawk traded to Indians White Sox
Here's the story.
Pena played in South Bend in '03. Don't recognize the name? That's because he played under the name as Adriano Rosario. It was later discovered that he is actually Tony Pena. Rosario was the name of his nephew.
From the Notes - July 8th
South Bend has won four games in July already, after winning just four the entire month of June.
The Silver Hawks are leading the chase for the second half playoff spots, although there are still a lot of games remaining.
Marc Krauss hit his first pro homer last night. He actually had a very productive night all around (single, reached on an error and scored, walk, home run, single, Sac Fly), not to mention a great catch up against the wall in the bottom of the seventh.
The team played 12 innings last night, then got on the bus to Beloit, Wisconsin. We arrived just after 5 AM Eastern Time, 4 AM here in Wisconsin. The joys of life on the road!
Game time at 8 PM Eastern, 7 PM Central tonight.
Greetings from Beloit
Good night! Or good morning! Either way, I'm going to sleep for a while hopefully.

We'll chat with manager Mark Haley again in the pregame, discussing the importance one game can have over the course of a 140 game season.
After the game, it's on the bus to Beloit, arriving in the middle of the night sometime. I probably won't have any posts until tomorrow afternoon, unless I actually sleep on the bus and get up at a reasonable hour tomorrow morning.

Rather than a pregame interview today, I'd thought we talk a bit about the Futures Game coming up on Sunday, and explore the rosters for former Midwest Leaguers.
A Brush with Greatness?
At one point, I went up some stairs and took an enclosed catwalk over the river that flows through downtown. From the catwalk, I looked down to the entrance of a hotel and noticed two silver trailers that were unloading. They looked fancy, so I figured it had to be someone important.
A few people got off the trailers, and I didn't really recognize them. I continued walking through the catwalk, and took a detour through the hotel. As I was exiting the hotel, 4-5 guys from the trailer were walking past me. I glanced at them, said hello, and moved on. Based on their look, I was guessing it was a band of some sort, but I had no idea who it was.
After leaving the hotel, I continued walking around downtown. About a half block later, I saw a poster advertising the Common Ground Music Festival (http://www.commongroundfest.com/). Sure enough, I recognized one of the bands on the poster as the guys I just passed at the hotel.
That's right, today, I said hello to Huey Lewis and The News.
I'm sure my mom would be a lot more excited about this than I am, but I figured it was blog worthy.

LAST GAME: South Bend celebrated the fourth of July with some fireworks of their own, banging out 17 hits on the way to a 7-3 victory over the Lansing Lugnuts. Reynaldo Navarro led the hit attack with four, including a triple, three singles, and two runs scored. A.J. Pollock added three hits, with Marc Krauss driving in a personal best three RBIs. Alfredo Marte added two more RBIs to his team leading total, giving him 41 on the season. Taylor Sinclair (ND) started but left after 1.2 innings with an injury. Jordan Meaker (ND) was excellent in long relief, tossing 4.0 innings of two run ball. Bryan Woodall (WP, 2-3) followed with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, with T.J. Hose (ND) recording the final three outs for the Silver Hawks. The loss was pinned on Ryan Koch (LP, 2-6), who allowed two runs in 2.1 innings.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________
TEAM NOTES:
· The Silver Hawks established a new season high with 17 hits in last night’s game (1 triple, 16 singles).
· Alfredo Marte’s homer in the ninth Thursday was the team’s first since June 9th and only the 21st of the season (last in MWL).
· South Bend is one of four Eastern teams fighting for a second half playoff spot (with Dayton, Great Lakes, and Lansing).
· South Bend has a losing record against every Eastern Division team but Lansing (3-8 WM, 1-7 GL, 1-15 FW, 3-5 DTN, 8-3 LAN).
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________
INDIVIDUAL NOTES:
· Victor Estevez had another hit last night, raising his average to .243. His average was at .179 on June 9th.
· RHP Bryan Woodall has lowered his ERA from 7.08 to 4.15 since June 5th.
· Ryan Cook has lost seven straight starts, while Randy Rodriguez has lost five in a row.
· Alfredo Marte drove in two runs last night, giving him a team-leading 41 this season.
· Reynaldo Navarro had his first four-hit game last night while A.J. Pollock had his first three-hit game.
Update on Sinclair
I'll see if I can get a better update today (and sorry for not posting this last night after the game, the wireless internet in the hotel was not working).
I thought the jobs done by Meaker, Woodall, and Hose in relief were as good as we've seen by the Silver Hawks bullpen this season. 7.1 innings of two run baseball is fantastic.

Walk Offs Are Fun
I LOVE WINNING!
It makes it so much easier to broadcast winning games than losses, and last night's walk off win was certainly no exception.
How about Alfredo Marte hitting the team's first homer since June 9th?
How about Victor Estevez coming through in the clutch with a walk off bases loaded single?
How about Bryan Woodall with another three scoreless innings in relief? He's been pitching great for the last month.
How about two balks being called in the ninth inning, one against each team?
Awesome.

Parker - 3B

Asencio - RF
Miley - SP
Talking to Mark Haley again for the pregame interview.
Oops
Consider:
- 21 hits alllowed
- 11 runs allowed
- 6 errors committed
- Held to just five hits
It was ugly. That's all you can really say. It was a horrible game. Those happen from time to time. I'm trying to stay positive with this club, and at the same time, I'm keeping in mind that this stretch of schedule through June and early July is very tough (Fort Wayne 12 times, West Michigan for 8, Great Lakes for 4). At the same time, it would be nice to start beating some of these teams.
As for the rest of this series, I'd say it's important to get at least one more win. It's very early, but for confidence reasons, if you take game one of a four-game series, you certainly don't want to lose the next three games (see: Dayton, early June).
This series aside, the four games at Lansing beginning on July 4th looms large. That is a team the Silver Hawks beat 7 out of 10 times in the first half. Again, it's early in the second half, but that series could set the tone for the rest of the season. Win 3 out of 4, and you realize that you can still beat up on some of the other teams that you had success against in the first half. Lose 3 out of 4 and it could turn into a long second half as confidence levels will probably drop.
But again, hopefully South Bend will get one or two more against West Michigan to wrap up this home stand.
From the Notes - July 2nd
vs. West Michigan Whitecaps (4-2 Second Half, 47-29 Overall)
Coveleski Stadium, South Bend, Indiana – 7:30 PM Eastern Time
Season Series: 7-2 Whitecaps
@ Coveleski Stadium: 1-1 Tie
@ Fifth Third Ballpark: 6-1 Whitecaps
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Silver Hawks Team Hitting: .242 – 14th
Silver Hawks Team Pitching: 4.19 ERA – 10th
Whitecaps Team Hitting: .275 – 1st
Whitecaps Team Pitching: 3.66 ERA – 5th
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
LAST GAME: A night after playing perhaps their best game of the season, the Silver Hawks certainly played their worst in losing 11-4 to West Michigan on Wednesday night. South Bend was held to five hits, allowed 11 runs on 21 hits, and committed six errors in losing to the Whitecaps. Billy Nowlin and Bryan Pounds each had four hits for West Michigan, with Nowlin driving in three. Randy Rodriguez (LP, 1-6) allowed six runs in 2.0 innings, with Daniel Vasquez (ND) allowing three in 4.0 innings. Jordan Meaker (ND) also allowed a pair of runs in his 2.0 innings on the mound. A.J. Pollock had his first professional hit and RBI as a bright spot for the Silver Hawks offensively. Brayan Villarreal (WP, 2-0) earned the win, as he defeated South Bend for the second time this season.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________
TEAM NOTES:
· The 21 hits allowed and six errors committed Wednesday night both represent new season highs for the Silver Hawks.
· South Bend ranks 11th in the MWL in fielding percentage; West Michigan ranks first.

Tonight's pregame interview guest will be Brett Moorhouse about his great outing last night.
About Last Night
Let's talk about last night's game. It was the last game in the month of June, and quite honestly, it was probably the best game the Silver Hawks played in the month.
Consider:
Great starting pitching by Brett Moorhouse
Great relief pitching by Justin Mace and T.J. Hose
Timely hitting
An early lead
A quick response when West Michigan tied the game with two more runs for South Bend
A late "add-on" run
No errors
A good crowd at the park
I'd say that was the best game I've seen in a month. Let's hope it continues tonight.
Number Changes
Wade Miley will now wear #33. He wanted that number at the beginning of the season, but with Ramon Ramirez being the veteran player, he got first choice. Now with Ramirez promoted to Visalia, Miley has taken 33.
And with #15 becoming open, Jordan Meaker has decided that he'd prefer to be that number.
So to recap:
Miley now #33
Meaker now #15
Superstition runs wild in baseball.
Today's Roster Move
Capellan was with South Bend earlier this year, pitching in two games (one run allowed in 4.0 innings). He was sent to extended spring training when Cook and Woodall came off of the DL. He then went to Visalia for five games, and is now being sent back to South Bend.
He becomes the 25th active player on the roster. Sean Morgan is on the DL. By all reports, Morgan is improving daily, but there is no timetable on his return as of yet.
For the first time in a while, South Bend will be playing with 25 active and healthy players.
