South Bend, IN – In conjunction with the Arizona Diamondbacks, the South Bend Silver Hawks have announced that right-handed reliever Yonata Ortega has joined the Hawks from extended spring training. He will take the roster spot of RHP Rafael Quezada, who is heading back to extended spring training for further development.
Ortega is coming off right ulnar collateral reconstruction (Tommy John Surgery) in 2008, and did not pitch at all last season. In 2007 with Missoula, Ortega was 0-2 with a 6.40 ERA and one save in 19 relief appearances. With a fastball that tops out in the mid-90s, Ortega is projected to be a late inning pitcher. The right-hander was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Diamondbacks on July 5, 2004 out of the Dominican Republic.
Quezada pitched in four games with South Bend this season, starting three. He had a 0-3 record and a 9.45 ERA with eight strikeouts in 13.1 innings.
The Silver Hawks roster is currently at 25 active players, plus one on the disabled list.
Ortega is expected to be in uniform for tonight’s game against the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Coveleski Stadium. First pitch is at 6:30 PM, with pregame coverage beginning on 1620 AM The Point at 6:10 PM. For more information about the team or to purchase tickets, please visit www.silverhawks.com.
