Baseball season is here!
Opening Day -- The day when hope spring eternal, and every team still has hopes of hoisting the trophy in mid-September. The day when we shake off the cold (hopefully) and embrace the warmth of the sunlight, the smell of the ballpark, and the taste of hot dogs and cold beer.
For the Silver Hawks, Opening Day also means boarding the bus for the first time and making the two hour trip to Fort Wayne to battle the TinCaps. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM Eastern Time, and we'll have pregame coverage at 6:45 PM Eastern Time.
The Fort Wayne trip is a commuter trip for the Silver Hawks, meaning that we ride the bus down before the game and come back to South Bend afterwards. It's the longest commute in the league (roughly 2 hours by bus), but thankfully it is the only city that the team commutes to and from. All the other road trips result in hotel stays, but not Fort Wayne.
While it is nice to sleep in your own bed, I'd still rather stay in Fort Wayne (particularly the first series of the year). Other teams that commute typically have an hour or less to drive each way.
Enough complaining...it's Opening Day! Let's go Silver Hawks!
More posts once we arrive at the stadium and I get set up.
"It's the longest commute in the league"
ReplyDeleteI think you mean the "shortest" commute. that's why you don't stay in hotel, I personally think that they should stay there also as there are times that games will go longer than the traditional 9 innings & if they were staying in FW, then there would not be a problem.
I commuted back and forth for the last 3 games and will tomorrow also and I am exhausted & I did not have to then practice and play ball. I think the league should change that so the "boys" stay there also
Nope, I meant longest. By commute, I mean going back and forth each day. The other teams we visit are trips...not commutes.
ReplyDeleteOther teams have 45 minute or hour commutes (like the teams in Iowa). The Silver Hawks are the only team that have a nearly two hour commute.
